Inspiration

We all have an overwhelming number of tabs and bookmarks we “swear we’ll get back to.” But instead of becoming knowledge, they become clutter. We wanted a smarter way to reclaim that lost potential — to turn saved content into something living, searchable, and genuinely useful.

What It Does

WebStash is a personal, AI-powered knowledge vault that lives entirely in your browser. It save links, notes, images, and videos instantly that you can tag and organize with smart filtering. You can chat with an AI that answers only using what you’ve saved. It transforms your passive bookmarks into dynamic, usable insights.

How We Built It

We built WebStash as a Chrome extension using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, storing all data locally through the Chrome Storage API. The interface features a human-friendly waterfall browsing view grouped by creation date, paired with a custom JSONL serializer and grounded prompt builder to ensure AI responses stay aligned with the user’s dataset. An inline chat interface powered by Prompt API enables direct querying of stored items, supported by robust JSON parsing and structured UI rendering. Throughout development, we focused on polished UX, efficient performance, and tightly grounded AI behavior.

Challenges We Ran Into

Ensuring AI responses remain strictly tied to the user’s dataset, implementing robust filtering while maintaining a clean, viewport-friendly layout, managing session context across model parameter changes, reliably extracting and rendering JSON output, and keeping all features performant within a popup environment.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

Our AI stays strictly within your saved data, featuring a sleek, mini-app–style UI with intelligent tag normalization and type detection. It lets you export your personal knowledge archive and, impressively, can even answer questions like “What’s my favorite tag?” instantly and correctly. We turned clutter into clarity — beautifully.

What We Learned

Data ownership matters—users want local control. UX is crucial, as small interactions like sticky controls and chip filters can transform workflows. Bookmarks only become true knowledge when they’re queryable, and grounded AI proves far more useful than generic chat. Ultimately, technology shines when it amplifies what we already know.

What’s Next for WebStash

In our next version with one-click saving from the right-click menu, our tool will offer smart auto-tagging and summarization for saved pages, a comprehensive analytics dashboard showing top topics and streaks, optional encrypted cloud sync for multi-device access, conversational memory across chat turns, and intuitive drag-and-drop organization with inline editing.
