LOCAL POWER, PROVINCIAL IMPACT:

Portage Power’s proposed renewable energy initiatives

Portage Power, a subsidiary of the Hydro Ottawa Group, is preparing a response to the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Long-Term 2 (LT2) Request for Proposals (RFP).

The initiative aims to address anticipated growth in provincial electricity demand and strengthen the reliability of Ontario’s electricity grid.

To support these goals, Portage Power is proposing new solar generation projects that would add clean, dependable energy to the system.

Kanata Solar I & II and Richmond Solar I, II, & III.

This will help diversify Ontario’s energy supply while creating social and environmental benefits directly for the Ottawa community.

The IESO’s competitive procurement initiative is designed to secure new electricity generation and storage resources to support Ontario’s future power system needs, with projects becoming operational between 2029 and 2034.

WHY THESE PROJECTS ARE IMPORTANT

These projects are part of Portage Power’s efforts to make Ontario’s electricity system as resilient and sustainable as possible. As the largest municipally-owned producer of green power in Ontario, Portage Power is dedicated to leveraging renewable technologies to create electricity responsibly, with minimal environmental impact, while fostering strong community relationships.

Specifically, these projects will:

  • Support projected growth in electricity demand across Ontario and enhance community resilience through a more reliable electricity grid.
  • Deliver clean, renewable energy, ensuring long-term reliability of the electricity supply while reducing Ontario’s carbon footprint.
  • For the Ottawa area, these projects offer a valuable opportunity to gain long-term value from sustainable generation, supporting community infrastructure improvements and other local priorities.

Kanata
Solar I & II

The Kanata Solar I & II projects propose the construction of a solar generation facility with a capacity of up to 13 MW. This facility will be situated on three parcels of land within the Kanata area, specifically:

  • 940 Klondike Road (Kanata I)
  • 375 March Valley Road (Kanata I)
  • 915 Klondike Road (Kanata II)
