6th edition – International Literary Prize “Canne al Vento” (“Reeds in the Wind”)

14 June 2025

Deadline: July 20, 2025

We are pleased to inform you that the call for proposals for the 6th edition of the International Literary Prize “Canne al Vento” (“Reeds in the Wind), promoted by the Municipality of Galtellì, Sardinia (Italy), in collaboration with the The Jane Austen Club of Sardinia, is officially open!

The prize, dedicated to Grazia Deledda, the first Italian woman awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, is now in its 6th edition, confirming itself as an important event in the international literary scene.

We are currently looking for writers and authors interested in participating in the initiative and, in this regard, we are involving literary institutes and organizations all over the world to collaborate in the dissemination of this competition.

Participation in the competition is free of charge and the prize is for short stories, divided into two sections:

– Section A: Short stories in Italian and English

– Section B: Short stories in the Sardinian language

The Municipality of Galtellì promotes the International Literary Prize “Canne al Vento”, dedicated to the figure of Grazia Deledda and her most renowned novel, Canne al Vento, which the Nobel laureate chose to set precisely in Galtellì. The Prize was created with the aim of enhancing the cultural legacy of the Nuoro-born writer and fostering dialogue between literature, identity, and territory.

This initiative represents a significant cultural opportunity for the whole of Sardinia: it is the first Sardinian literary prize with an international scope, featuring sections for short stories in ItalianEnglish (Section A) and Sardinian (Section B). This multilingual approach reflects the Prize’s mission to promote expressive diversity and to encourage intercultural exchange.

THEMES AND INSPIRATION

The competition rules require that participating stories be inspired by the central themes of Grazia Deledda’s literary work, particularly those explored in Canne al vento:

  • The religiosity as an inner and universal dimension;
  • sense of belonging and cultural identity;
  • The depiction of Sardinia’s landscape and human environment during Deledda’s time;
  • The‎ analysis of social dynamics and family relationships, with special attention to class structure and roles.

Through these themes, the Prize seeks to inspire deep and contemporary reflections that connect memory with modern relevance.

ORGANIZATION

The current edition of the Prize and its related events is organized by “Il Club di Jane Austen Sardegna, a cultural association that has been active since 2017 in promoting reading across the region. The association is responsible for developing the program and enhancing Deledda’s literary heritage through accessible and engaging initiatives.

For each section, the winners will receive EUR 500. In addition, all finalists will have their stories published and will be hosted and reimbursed for travel expenses to attend the award ceremony in Galtellì, the charming Sardinian village where Grazia Deledda’s famous novel Reeds in the Wind is set.

All submissions must be received by July 20, 2025. Finalist stories will be announced on August 25, 2025.

Full details of the contest are available on the official website: https://www.premiocannealvento.it/en/

Submitting

We accept fiction and nonfiction up to 6,000 words and 3-5 pages of poetry. Submit one entry per year via our online submission manager. Excerpts of longer works are welcome if self-contained.

If you are a current subscriber through our Winter 2025-2026 issue, your contest entry is free of charge. You will still be prompted to “checkout” but you will not be required to enter payment information and will not be charged. If you’re not sure when your subscription expires, feel free to email us at [email protected].

If you are not a subscriber, or your subscription expires before our Winter 2025-2026 issue, the submission manager will prompt you to pay the $30 fee at checkout. The fee includes a 1-year subscription to Ploughshares (beginning with the Spring 2025 issue and ending with the Winter 2025-2026 issue) and free submissions to the 2025 regular reading period.

2024 PSH Poetry Contest Sponsorship Information

13 May 2024

Thanks for your interest in sponsoring the 2024 Poetry Super Highway Poetry Contest. It is through the generous donations of organizations and people like you which make this a unique venture in which not only do three winners rise to the top, but every contest entrant receives some kind of prize just for entering.

The Poetry Super Highway Poetry Contest is blindly judged by 3 different poets who live in different areas of the world. We charge one dollar entry fee for each poem with no limits on the number of entries. The top three scoring poets will divide up 100% of the entry fees taken in and all of the rest of the prizes will be distributed by you to all of the contest entrants.

Before you agree to sponsor and send me the list of what you’d like to donate, please review the following information so we’re all on the same page:

  • The contest will run roughly the mid-July through mid-October.
  • In exchange for donating merchandise or services which would be of interest to poets and writers, you (or your zine, or your organization or your website) will receive sponsorship mention online and in all Contest Correspondence.
  • In addition, as a sponsor, you will receive a free classified ad in the Poetry Super Highway Classifieds section (both online and in the weekly PSH e-mail update) for the duration of the contest. (Please don’t send the ad now…further guidelines on this will be sent closer to the contest’s start.)

As a sponsor you agree to:

  1. Mail your prizes directly to the contest entrants within 2 weeks of being notified of who to send your prize(s) to.
  2. The contest is open to everyone in the world which means it’s possible that you might have to send a prize to a country that you don’t live in which will, of course, cost more. (I will do the best I can to distribute the prizes evenly so you don’t have to send to more than one person living abroad. Please keep in mind that this mainly applies to people living in the United States where most of our contest entrants live. If you are donating prizes from outside of the United States, it won’t be as easy to guarantee that you will only have to send one prize to someone abroad.)
  3. You also agree to notify me via e-mail as soon as you’ve put the prizes in the mail so I can keep track and make sure that everyone who enters is getting what they deserve.

If you agree to all this, then fantastic! Click on the link below to access our sponsors prize submission form.

Please review last year’s prize list for samples of what and how much of each has been donated in the past. Make sure to include quantity and title for each item, and if it’s a service, a very brief description of what the service is.

Closer to the contest as the sponsors list builds, I will send you more detailed contest information, including the complete sponsors list, as well as information about the judges, and how to go about submitting your classified ad.

Thanks again for your interest in sponsoring our annual contest and I look forward to hearing from you acknowledging that you’ve read the above sponsorship guidelines and with your detailed prize lists.

Don’t hesitate to write if you have any further questions otherwise.
