End of September, October, November and December 2018

Little sister decided to try running on the cross country team.  Since that was Daddy's sport in high school, we were excited for her to try it out.  She's not the fastest, and not the slowest.  She did pretty darn good, especially considering that she's brand new to this running thing!  She never quit, even when the races were hard, and her times improved with every race she ran.  We were grateful that Grandma was always willing to cheer her on when we couldn't be there.  She loved being on the team and getting to know new people.  She's pretty awesome, this little sister of ours!

Towards the beginning of October, our ward held their annual fall festival.  We just do dinner and some fun games for kids.  Since Husband is in the bishopric we got there early to help set up.  Big brother and little brother were running around outside with some other boys from the neighborhood.  Apparently, big brother had ignored my instructions to please put on socks and shoes and had grabbed flip flops.  Since those aren't great for running in, he had removed them and was barefoot. So when he climbed up the outside of the stair railing at the back of the church, and then jumped to the ground below, he landed flat on his bare feet on the concrete.  It's probably around a 5 foot drop.  I was looking all over for the boys since they hadn't actually asked permission to leave the building.  When I found them out back, the other boys were trying to help big brother limp up the stairs.  We stayed for another 10 minutes, but big brother was getting more and more vocal about how much pain he was in.  So instead of eating dinner, I left husband there with the other 3 and I took big brother home to get some ibuprofen.  He couldn't bear any weight at all on his leg.  Big brother has a pretty high tolerance for pain, so I was getting really concerned.  If he was hurting that bad, he must have broken something.  After a video consultation with Aunt Shaye, and a short phone call with Dad, we decided to take him to the ER.  Since he couldn't walk, I got to carry all 70+ pounds of him.  Fortunately someone saw me coming and came to greet me at the door with a wheelchair.  It was good I thought to grab the kindle so he could watch movies while we waited, 'cuz it was a bit of a wait.  They x-rayed him, and then examined him.  He pointed out a bruise near his knee so we did two x-rays because there was concern about him having fractured something from his foot to his knee.  Later, he told me the bruise happened at school that day.  Oy vey.  This kid!  So glad we paid for an x-ray on a bruise that had nothing to do with this injury!  Unfortunately, the x-rays didn't show much.  They told us it still could be fractured but we'd have to see an orthopedic doctor after the swelling went down to know for sure.  They told us to keep him off of it as much as possible.  The next day we missed school because he literally coudln't walk.  A friend loaned us a walking boot their daughter used when she had the same injury, so he could at least walk enough to go to school.

Big sister joined the choir at the high school.  We enjoyed going to her first concert and hearing her perform!

For fall break we decided to head down to coral pink sand dunes with wife's family.  Since we were getting there a couple days before everyone else, we planned a day trip into Zion's.  We were so glad we did.  Zion's was just beautiful! It was a little on the cold side, but better cold than hot!  We brought our coats and layered up and it was perfect!

Of course, taking big brother around Zions with a broken foot was a bit of a conundrum.  I put out a plea on Facebook for a big jogging stroller and my friend said she had a double one we could borrow.  So Big brother rode the whole time and occasionally little brother rode, as well.  Since big brother is our least enthusiastic hiker, he was pretty happy with the arrangement.  We got lots of looks and comments, pushing this big stroller around the hiking trails and having to haul the stroller on and off the buses.  But it worked out pretty well, all things considered!

The Coral Pink Sand Dunes were awesome, as usual!  The kids loved riding on the four wheelers and playing around the camp site.  Our niece Tiffany came up for an evening with her husband Alex and their baby Jack, and we did scones.  It was a nice relaxing week, a very much needed break!

Since big brother was supposed to stay off his foot as much as possible, he got to hang out in the trailer watching movies and coloring a lot.

He usually ended up with a few extra people in the trailer with him because he had a screen.  :)

We were so glad Trip and Cullen joined us, the kids have so much fun when they're around!

Big brother did venture outside sometimes, and enjoyed playing in the dirt.

After we got back from our trip, we were able to get into the orthopedic clinic to have his foot re-examined.  Unfortuately, the spot where it's most likely he's injured is a spot that is almost impossible to get an image of.  But after examining him, the doctor determined that he needed a walking boot for a few weeks.  She said it was either bruised really bad or had a tiny fracture, and either way it needed to be cushioned well for a while so it could heel.  He was okay with this for few days, but quickly tired of wearing the boot.  I felt bad, but he did kinda learn his lesson about wearing shoes when mom asks you to.  Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way!  He wore the boot for a few weeks, and then we went back to see how he was healing.  The doctor declared his foot all healed up and big brother happily removed the boot before we even made it out to the car.

Little brother is in the stage of life where he is losing baby teeth.  He ended up losing a few at school this year.  He liked that since the school gives them a tiny plastic treasure box to put their tooth in for safe keeping.  One particular day, he got hit in the face with a ball at recess.  It knocked out his tooth.  Since he was playing on the grass, the tooth was quite literally lost.  He wrote a letter to the tooth fairy so he would still get "saptheeg" (something).

That is one cute toothless grin!

Halloween is always fun around our house!   We tend towards the more cute Halloween stuff than the scary.  This year, the only one participating in the elementary parade was little brother.  Big brother gets too overwhelmed, so we take him with us to watch the parade, but then we take him to get pancakes.  He did decide that he wanted to do the party, which he hasn't really wanted to in the past.  So we enjoyed the parade, got some breakfast at village inn, and then took big brother back to school.  Just as we were dropping him off, I saw the Jr high principal leaving the elementary.  He was dressed like a Michael Jackson from Thriller.  As soon as I saw that I knew that little sister was having a not so great day.  She doesn't love Halloween as it is, and barely tolerated the parades in the past because she didn't appreciate the scary music they play as the elementary kids walk through the junior high and high school.  The song Thriller, however, is an entirely different level of scary to her.  She is terrified of it.  TERRIFIED.  Never seen the music video, but just the song is enough to make her cry.  When I saw the jr high principal dressed for Thriller, I knew they'd done something with that for the students and that little sister wasn't ok.  I went home and checked the Jr High facebook page, which confirmed my suspicions.  The principal and staff had put together a routine for Thriller.  Now, stepping out of mom mode, let me just say that they did an amazing job.  The dancing was fantastic.  The principal has some moves!  The entire student body (minus my kid) absolutely loved it.  The staff clearly worked really hard on this.  They had the Thriller music video playing on a big screen set up on the stage.  As I showed Husband the video, we were scanning the audience for our baby girl.  The lights moved at one point and there she was.  Sitting near the front, hands clapped firmly over her ears.  This whole routine was a little over 7 minutes and it was probably the longest 7 minutes of her life!  I texted her to see if she was ok, and she said she was.  But she needed a lot of cuddles when she got home from school!  Oh, my sweet sensitive little sister!

Big sister was a good sport and went trick-or-treating with her younger siblings.  Big sister was a witch, little sister was a unicorn, big brother was The Flash, and little brother was a ninja.  Oh, and Mom was Minnie Mouse.  It was fun to go out all together as a family!

When Husband got put into the bishopric, Wife was released from Young Women's.  It was sad, I don't want to talk about it. Anyway.  Husband went to a service auction that the young women had planned.  They were supposed to offer a service.  It put husband on the spot, he hadn't gone prepared for this.  So he offered to make cinnamon rolls and cookies.  Both of these items went to a couple of leaders, and the leaders were insistent that HE had to be the one to make them.  They all knew I could do it, but they wanted him to do it.  So on one of his days off, we got to work.  He made chocolate chip cookies and caramel apple cinnamon rolls.  He did a pretty good job, and I didn't have to cook dinner 'cuz there was enough cinnamon rolls leftover for us.  Bonus!

He also cleaned the whole kitchen when he was done.  Wouldn't let me help with that part at all!  Seriously.  I am one spoiled wife!

Husband wanted to wait until we had a lot of leaves on the ground before he raked.  The kids wanted a big pile so they could jump in.  So one afternoon after school he and the younger three got to work and raked up a big pile.  They all took turns jumping in and then building the pile back up before they took the leaves to be used as compost in the garden.

Sunday nights mean visits to ghre grandparents.  At wife's parents house, this also means a game or three of pool.  Daddy is so patient in helping the boys learn how to play and they love it!

We took advantage of a sunny day in November and got our Christmas lights up.  The kids were thrilled to climb onto the roof with Dad and help him

We had Thanksgiving with wife's family this year.  During which I took exactly zero pictures.  We had ALMOST everyone!  One niece's daughter got sick the night before so she couldn't make it, but everyone else was there and it was AWESOME!  We ate our hearts out, and then had pie-till-we-die.  I think I cooked the biggest turkey I ever have, along with the most potatoes and gravy and rolls I've ever done. Yummy food and family, it's a good combination!

August and September 2018

Big brother had an appointment with the orthodontist.  It's typically once every 6 months to see if he's ready for braces.  He finally had enough adult teeth in so it was time for braces!  They'd had a cancellation for that afternoon, so it all happened pretty fast.  He was very excited to finally get his braces.  I must say he looks pretty handsome!

Husband turned the big 40!  We kept the celebrations pretty low key.  The kids gave him presents and lots of hugs.

Image
We skipped the cake and made him a banana cream pie.  Keeping the candles upright was a bit of a challenge, but we managed!  We love this man, even if he didn't want lots of pictures, lol!

We wanted to get in one last camping trip before school got going.  So we headed up to the Uintahs for some camping and four wheeling.  Big sister convinced us to bring along her best friend, Bigger sister.  They had so much fun riding around together.
Image
Little sister has decided that grandmas yellow 250 is actually pretty fun to drive, and little brother is absolutely thrilled to ride in front of Daddy on his machine.

We did turkey legs for dinner 'cuz they're SO yummy.

We had a visitor while we were having dinner

It was a great way to finish up the summer.  My favorite part was after the sun went down.  It's dark enough in the Uintahs that you can see the stars really well.  Big sister and bigger sister were happy that they got to see the milky way and the littler kids were thrilled with the shooting star show we got.

School was ready and waiting for us when we got back from camping.  Little sister was starting 6th grade, which meant a switch to the Junior High.   She started a day before everyone else.  They let the 6th graders have a short day all to themselves to figure everything out before the rest of the student body is there.  She had a great first day and was feeling very ready to take on this Jr. High thing!
Image

Big Brother headed into 3rd grade.  We met his teacher before school started to discuss his IEP and some of his needs.  He's got yet another teacher that will be gone for a while because she's having a baby.  We keep getting those, lol!  She seems awesome, though.  I warned her that Big brother would be one of her favorites and she kinda gave me that "whatever you say, mama" look that I get from everyone.  (At his end of year IEP meeting, she freely admitted that he's totally her favorite.)  Big brother has this school thing down.  We walked him to the playground and he found the sign for his teacher easily and just started walking in that direction.  As he got to his line, there were several kids he already knew that were greeting him and excited to see him.  He's got good friends in this class.  Go take on the world, sweet Bucky!
Image

Little brother was super excited to be going to first grade and, therefore, ALL day!  His absolute bestest buddy from kindergarten was in his class, and they were thrilled with this arrangement.  Best buddy has a peanut allergy so Little Brother reminded us nine gazillion times to make his lunch nut free so that he could sit with his friend at lunch.  He can be quite the thoughtful kid.  It turned out to be a good thing, because this whole eating lunch at school thing was very overwhelming to bestest buddy.  Little brother stuck with him, helping him go to the office to call his mom, and reassuring him every day that he'd sit right with him all through lunch.  It took a week or two, but best buddy eventually was able to get through lunch and decided it wasn't so bad.  Man, I love this kid!

My boys, ready to take on elementary school!!!

Big sister is a turd.  She left the house before I could get a first day of school picture!  Like we haven't been doing this for a decade.  So I had to get one of her after school while we were waiting for her brothers at the elementary.  Ahem.  Big sister started 9th grade - she's a freshman at the HIGH SCHOOL!  Gah!  I don't know how I got old enough to have a kid in high school, but there she is.  She's taking some honors classes, and is excited to be in choir and in production.  This girl just keeps getting better with age!

Niece Ashley came to visit us and we took advantage of extra hands.  I taught Ashley and big sister how to make the jam and they made LOTS of raspberry and strawberry freezer jam.  Thank you Costco for having a good sale on these, my jam supply was getting low.

The main reason cousin Ashley was here with us was to take care of us while wife was recuperating from carpal tunnel surgery.  Earlier in the summer while we were fourwheeling, my hands went totally numb.  They've always gotten tingly and I knew carpal tunnel was an issue, but this time I was having a hard time gripping the handle bars and using the front brakes.  This is especially disoncerting when big brother is on behind me.  So I didn't really ride most of the summer, which sucked.  It basically took the whole summer to get into a doctor and decide to proceed with surgery.  After consulting friends who'd done one at a time and both together, I decided to bite the bullet and just do them both at the same time.  I figured I'd be out of commission either way, but at least if I did both I wouldn't be out of commission twice.  Plus the added bonus that I didn't have to pay for two separate surgeries, so it was a bit cheaper to do both.  I was a bit nervous for this one, My hands are kinda important to me so I was a little worried about something going wrong.  I didn't sleep much Sunday night, and was up pretty early Monday morning.  The most painful part was getting my hands numbed.  The doctor said that part wouldn't hurt too much.  The doctor LIED.  They basically stick in a needle and fill your palm with novacaine to numb everything.  It STUNG.  Holy crap.  He started with my left hand and I was trying to just breath between saying "Ow, Ow, Ow!!!"  He asked if I wanted to stop and I said no, let's not delay the inevitable let's just get it over with.  The right hand was no picnic either.  But they finally got the novacaine in and pulled the needle out.  Youch!  My cute nurse looked super familiar and we finally figured out we'd been in elementary school together.  Crazy small world!  Once I was numb, they stretched out my left arm and did the surgery.  Husband watched, I did not thankyouverymuch.  It felt a little odd, but didn't hurt.  Once they stitched me back up and bandaged it, they did the right side.  I'm really ok that the part that hurt the most was the shortest part.  It didn't take too long, and we were on our way home.  Husband got me settled and went to get my meds.  Niece Ashley was a saint and really helped me out.  For most of the day I was till numb, so it didn't hurt too much.  I definitely couldn't do a whole lot for myself, but using the bathroom and feeding myself were not a huge problem.  I was just a little slow.  Ashley was so good to run all my kids to and from school and take care of dinners and me.  Niece Kylie was around a little, as well, and helped out where she could.  I did not cancel piano lessons that week, so Monday afternoon I was teaching away with numb hands.  I discovered I could still play enough to teach a piano lesson, so hooray for that!  Two of my dear friends stopped by with a "sunshine box" to encourage my recovery.  They basically went to Walmart and bought everything they could find that was yellow.  It was absolutely hilarious and I am so grateful for amazing friends!  Husband had to help me brush my teeth and get ready for bed.   Thank heavens for really good pain meds - they just knock me out and I slept all the way through the night.  I woke up hurting pretty bad, so Husband was quick to jump out of bed and get my ice packs and some pain meds.  As long as I stayed on top of my meds, the pain was pretty manageable.  Ashley stayed for about a week and a half, and I definitely couldn't have done it without her!  It was rather amusing when she and Kylie tried to do my hair for me.  It took both of them twice as long as it usually takes me, and I kept smelling burnt hair, lol!  So basically, I let them help with my hair and husband help with a bath and teeth brushing once, and then I was determined to do it myself.  Wednesday afternoon I managed to shower and do my hair and makeup all by myself, thankyouverymuch!
Image

The reason I made so much effort on Wednesday was because we had an appointment with the Stake Presidency.  This was planned before the surgery so we'd had a couple weeks to panic about what they wanted this time.  Husband was still in Elders Quorum and hadn't been in the new presidency for very long.  We knew our bishopric was due to be reorganized, so we were a little nervous.  Husband had to work until 9, so we'd set our appointment for 9.  Fortunately the Stake President is Husband's supervisor, so he was understanding about Husband's schedule.  Ashely drove me to the church and walked me to the door since my hands weren't strong enough to pull the door open.  Then she headed home to take care of my kids.  Husband got there a couple minutes later.  After speaking to us separately, they brought us in together with the entire stake presidency and asked if Husband would accept a call to serve as second counselor in our new bishopric.  We were both (understandably) overwhelmed, but the spirit in the room was SO strong and confirmed that this call was coming from Heavenly Father.  We talked for a few minutes about when everything would happen, and who the bishop and 1st counselor would be.  It was the end of August, but due to Labor Day and the 1st counselor being out of town, they told us it would happen on September 9th.  So we had a couple weeks to get used to the idea.  Husband felt very overwhelmed and inadequate, so that spiritual confirmation was nice to have.  Since our church didn't start until 2pm, we had a chance the morning of the 9th to tell the kids what would be happening.  During Sacrament Meeting, they first released the old Bishopric.  Then, the Stake president asked husband to stand and there was a very audible intake of breath from the entire congregation.  Haha!  I think people thought Husband was going to be the bishop.  They only asked him to stand first because he needed to be ordained a high priest first.  So it was kinda comical to me.  Our new bishopric was sustained and they invited the old bishopric and their wives to bear short testimonies, then asked our new bishopric and their wives to bear a short testimony.  I wasn't expecting that!  With my bandages still on my hand I looked a little like a prize fighter in a dress.  The meeting was filled with the spirit and that was just awesome.  Since Husband's father couldn't say the words to ordain him a high priest, he asked our stake president, his boss, to ordain him.  We are so grateful for this man and his friendship to us.  We would've loved for Husband's dad to do it, but since he couldn't it was an honor to have someone we know and love so much step in.  Husband's parents came, so his father was able to be in the circle as Husband was ordained.  It's been a humbling, crazy, wondrful, stressful, faith-promoting experience so far.

Girls Camp 2018

The last few days of July and the first few days of August was when our Stake Girls Camp was scheduled.  Wife got to go with Big sister.  Big sister's 3rd year, Wife's 4th.  Husband was able to get some time off to come up and help the first day.  Thanks to Husband's sister for taking the younger 3 for us so we could make that happen!  Husband proved invaluable in helping to get all the tents set up.  There were constant cries of "Brother Beck!" from all over the camp.  I think he had a hand in putting up pretty much every single tent except Wife's.  The first day was hot, and wife was worried about girls ending up dehydrated like last year.  She and her adivsors were the crazy ladies constantly asking everyone when the last time they'd had a drink from their water bottle and asking them what color their pee was.  Hahaha!  But it worked, nobody collapsed on our watch this time!  We managed to get a picture of Daddy and big sister before Daddy had to head home on day 2.
Image
Girl's Camp was a blast.  We went on a beautiful hike on a perfectly overcast day.  I love being with my daughter and my daughter from another mother.
Image
Big sister had a good time and was always surrounded by good friends
Image
Heading out on the lake - big sister participated, Wife did not.  Big sister didn't stay very long, some of the girls didn't take long falling out of their canoes and she wanted no part of that.  She and some friends came right back and took a hike around the lake instead.

This picture kind of sums up the week.  That's wife's cot.  Hanging from the ceiling.  At 2:00 in the morning.  Big sister and her friends couldn't sleep so they came in to Wife's tent and hung out for a bit.  I walked them back and then spent half an hour getting all the other girls settled into their tents.  When I got back, my advisors had done this and were pretending to be asleep/innocent.  LOL never leave a cot unattended!

Mommy with all the awesome leaders.  Girls Camp is always a fantastic week!
