Channeling Forrest Gump

When in adversity or in a bind, one should watch Forrest Gump and remember that it is in your power to make the best of it in your life because to quote Forrest, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get"

(Imagine now that the box contains chocolates from the Harry Potter series and not a random selection from Godiva... Now that's a whole lot of interesting unknowns!!)

...and at the end of it all, Forrest led a pretty amazing life. The end.

Cue: The theme song "I'm Forrest... Forrest Gump" by Alan Silvestri

In commemoration of the National Day of Mourning

Okay, so the theme of today is "Life and Death" since the Malaysian government has officially designated today as the National Day of Mourning in lieu of the first return of the remains of those who perished in the MH17 incident. May they rest in peace and the families of the people who were loss find solace.

On a more personal note, there has been much that I have learned from the loss of a number of some family members, friends, ex-colleagues and family members of friends over the last decade:

  • An aunt who stands by the philosophy about living life and doing everything you want when you have good health on your side... and when you start collecting ailments as you age, observe the diet and lifestyle prescribed to you with due diligence. Basically she said we should do everything we want before we regret on missing out on what we should have done while we could. Carpe diem. (This aunt is still living her life according to her doctor's orders and happily playing with her grandchildren)
  • A friend who was first diagnosed of a rare form of cancer who looked at every available option, lived life to the fullest, and continued to make new goals in life as he achieved a goal. This went on until the very end when the cancer finally defeated him. Until today, what this friend has done in his short life is the one reason why I can't stand people who whine and cry about how life is unfair when they didn't even put any effort into living the way they think they should.
  • Many others in the family who role play as their own personal doctor - some even insisting on going to their GP only even though they should be having more regular check-ins with a specialist for serious ailments.
  • There are those who had serious health issues that required major surgeries who think "Hey, everything has been good over the last few years so I think it is safe to pig out on the things I was not supposed to eat to make up for the times I have to forgo it."
  • There are also those who think that a headache is just a headache and it'll go away if I take a couple of paracetamol or aspirin tablets (or some other form of painkillers or muscle relaxants). But a headache is not just a regular headache if it goes on for 3 days and more!
  • Not to forget are those who have the inability to socialize with others or those who have a tendency to ostracize the very people who want to help them. These are the folks who lose their mental capacity at an accelerated rate and have the potential to become really lonely as they age.
  • There are also a few who let every single fear that they have rule their lives and the lives of their loved ones. They end up never living the lives that they wanted... or they caused further pain to their loved ones after they leave because of their own paranoia and short-sightedness.
So... you know how everyone can make excuses about doing or not doing something for the betterment of yourself and those you love? Or go into a state of denial because you hate to admit that you are no longer as healthy as an ox like when you were 18-years old? Or holding grudges or being passive or negative about how things are?

Stop kidding yourselves. Be honest with yourself and know yourself. If something is bothering you, seek help or make a choice that will allow you to move on to be in a better place in your life. You make your own choices. Doing nothing is also a choice. The only time when "I have no choice" is true in any situation is when you have reached the absolute point-of-no-return.

Being in the spotlight

Birthdays come and birthdays go... and in the light of social networks, getting a wall full of birthday greetings has become a norm. So what was the most memorable thing that happened for me this year?

My lovely schoolmates had asked me to join them for an all-you-can-eat steamboat-BBQ buffet at Macalister Rd... and boy did we eat! When we've had our fill - the lovely Vicky brought the birthday cake!! It was a homemade moist chocolate cake and it was really yum!

Lighting the candles was a bit of a challenge and it was funny how we eventually used ourselves to create a wall to block the wind from all the fans around our table. The gals started singing happy birthday and 10 seconds later... the same song was played on the PA system. Everyone in the restaurant started singing and clapping along!
Note: The place is about as big as 2 futsal fields.

OMG!!! Wow!!! Wow~~~~~~~~!!

But soon everyone at my table started to feel somewhat catatonic or maybe even had a want to hide under the table when the song on the PA seems to never end. I swear that it has to be the longest birthday song medley in every possible popular language/dialect ever produced in this part of the world. Awkward... but overall a most memorable experience.

At least, it wasn't like being asked to stand on the table by the crew in TGIF. That would have been a way more embarrassing experience. ^_^

The Bizarre Comedy of Status Update Thread Hijackers: Episode 1.5

As follow up to the madness in the below episode, I thought that a follow up status message should sum up what I thought about what had just happened... and ended up getting a tail end from episode 1. Enjoy episode one and a half (1.5).

The Status Update:
Entertainment is... when your crazy friends hijack one of your status update thread and make it into a comedy episode of the bizarre kind.

The comments thread:

Crazy Devil: It feels like you've stepped into the twilight zone :D

Sweetie: Lol.. It's an epic

Blog Stalker: Serves to prove that befriending crazies is actually a good thing..

Crazy Devil: It takes a certain amount of insanity to be a genius!

Blog Stalker: Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? Ya'know like evil masterminds.. they're like waaaaayy too smart and people call 'em crazy.. Or does that apply to the evil ones only? Hmm.. *scratch head*

Spare cash to buy myself a Roti Canai supply for a year

Ok, so we do this once a year. I don't enjoy it but I've completed this insanely annoying task nearly a month back

Ha, there you go!

I now know that I'll get back enough moolah to (erm...) buy enough roti canai to make myself sick of it for the year.

If you haven't already done so and wondering what I'm talking about... it's time to submit your income tax reports to LHDN.

The Bizarre Comedy of Status Update Thread Hijackers: Episode 1

Occasionally, we all have crazy friends who hijack our status threads and make it into a total bizarre laugh fest. The most recent one on mine is too good not to capture into a blog post. Please put on your helmets and try not to lose too many brain cells along the way. It's a long read but... hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Note: All names have been changed to protect the identity of the crazies and most colloquial (Malaysian English a.k.a. Manglish) terms have been corrected (or its context explained quite literally) for easy reading in normal Internet English + chatspeak.

The Status Update:
I miss my little car!!! She was checked in for some "Corrective Cosmetic Surgery" since Monday... Can't wait to see it back at home in about a week's time...

The comments thread:

Crazy Devil: this is NOT the pirate you're looking for
Assuming said pirate accepts such a request, what's in it for the pirate in question, savy

Blog Stalker: A pint of the same beverage, from the coldest powered temperature lowering boxes this side of the high seas...

Crazy Devil: meh..its a start

Crazy Devil: Semua pun boleh..including changing the teaching of languages every 2 years
*Semua pun boleh: Everything also can (be done)

Blog Stalker: Isn't KL like the fast food capital of Malaysia? They have EVERY single fast food under the sun and then some..

Blog Stalker: still, it's So Good~
Kinda ironic in a sense.. heh..

Crazy Devil: its soo good it can get u killed :P

--- THE END ---

5:30 PM

I'm truly and fully me again, joy!

I realized recently that my emo bone has finally dissolved into nothingness. I can't be happier about that than I already am to have known that for myself.

This means I've already forgiven myself for what I shouldn't blame myself for (because I wasn't the one at fault in a big way). I am glad... really, really glad about that! 진짜!!!

Deciding to disappear from the world of the person who had hurt me badly was the best advice I took from a very wise friend. The moment I realized that I didn't even remember that person's birthday until it was over for quite a while... was the best thing in the world.

Being busy lately probably helped too. I've had to move house and be busy in unpacking and setting up stuff in the new place within the last 3 months; I've had to travel to India for a week in June; I am in the midst of a transition into a new job role and making sure my soon-to-be ex-team mates understand everything that they need to pick up (quite a number of areas to cover here).

It also seems that my pile of DVDs and "DVDs" had been quietly growing and they are crying for some attention too. :P

I've also added tennis into my schedule recently since my tennis partner had decided to be back in action... (whee!! more exercise and running on court).

It's time to regain some creative writing juices... hmmm...

Intention vs Action & Effort

Intention x ZERO Action x ZERO Effort = Wishful thinking

Wishful Thinking when made known to another person = NATO

Intention x Action x WRONG Effort = Barking Up the Wrong Tree

Intention x Action x SUITABLE Effort = Potential to Successfully Reach your Goal

In short:

  • Having wishful thinking and NATO gets you nowhere near your goal.
  • Barking up the wrong tree gets you nowhere too... but you might learn something for trying anyway...
  • Putting in the right amount of effort and the right type of effort will bring you closer to your goals

No amount of "What if..." and "I wish..." will help you get a real answer. At the end of the day, we are the ones who are responsible to help ourselves out in whatever situation we might be in.

NATO: No Action Talk Only
