Welcome to the Asian Technology Information Program

Fresh Perspectives: Welcoming Our New CEO and HPC Program Director

The past year has seen some significant changes at ATIP. Dr. David Kahaner, the founding principal and chief executive officer of ATIP, retired and is now Chairman Emeritus. He will continue to serve as a mentor and advisor to the Board of Directors. David’s commitment and contributions to the global HPC community led ATIP to become the premier source of English-language news on developments in the Asian high-performance technology scene for more than 30 years. With the appointment of Ms. Suzann Riester as the new CEO, the company is set to redefine its strategic vision and operational priorities. In addition, Dr. Andrew Chien, a distinguished expert in HPC and computational science, brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to the role of HPC Program Director. This leadership transition is expected to propel ATIP to new heights, enhancing its ability to provide cutting-edge insights and solutions in the rapidly evolving fields of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum information science.

ATIP in Action

2025 Quantum Computing Expo, Tokyo

2025 Quantum Computing Expo, Tokyo
ATIP attended this year's Quantum Computing Expo, Tokyo in April. Takuya KITAGAWA, president of QuEra and Prof. Naoko YAMAMOTO, Keio University are seen here discussing the possibilities and issues of quantum computing, highlighting how quantum computing is getting to an interesting stage for simulation of chemistry and physics.

ATIP Visits NSCC in Singapore
On June 6, 2024, ATIP visited the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) in Singapore and receoved a tour of the ASIPIRE2A Data Centre. From left to right: Dr. Terence HUNG, NSCC Deputy Chief Executive; Assoc. Prof. Tin Wee TAN, NSCC Chief Executive; Dr. Andrew CHIEN, ATIP HPC Program Director; and Mr. Stephen WONG, ATIP Technology Analyst. Other NSCC hosts of the tour not shown included Mr. Eugene LOW, Deputy Director, Marketing and Engagement (also head of public relations), Mr. Vincent LIM, Senior Assistant Director, Facilities (i.e., data center chief), and Mr. Prasanth SELVARAJAH, Assistant Facilities Manager. Please note that Dr. HUNG and Prof. TAN's desgnations at the time of ATIP's visit are indicated here. As of July 1, Dr. HUNG is the new Chief Executive at NSCC. Prof. TAN remains at NSCC as Senior Special Projects Director for a short time to ensure a smooth leadership transition before moving on to his next role (which has yet to be officially announced).

Transitions
(From the desk of Dr. Kahaner)

Transitions(From the desk of Dr. Kahaner)
My years living in Asia while working for the Office of Naval Research motivated me to stay abreast of technology trends in a rapidly developing part of the world. Fortunately, numerous individuals were also similarly interested, leading to my formation of ATIP. Looking back three decades later, ATIP has studied topics as diverse as flat panel displays, MEMS, rescue robots, nanotech, batteries, quantum science, AI, etc. And of course, HPC (High Performance Computing) is my personal favorite. ATIP emphasizes on-the-ground, face-to-face interactions, scientist-to-scientist. This approach continues. Globalization and new tools lead to new approaches and encourage new people with new ideas. This is a good time for me to transition and spend more time with family and friends. I will stay involved and am always happy to talk about technology.
