new old pattern: Into the Valley

A couple of years ago, I wrote a pattern for this beanie & it was published in Bobbins. Now I’m finally getting around to releasing the pattern into the wild. It’s a cabled man’s beanie, knit in aran weight, and available as a free ravelry download .

Lennard-Jones socks

Last year I submitted my chemistry-inspired Lennard-Jones sock pattern to new British knitting magazine Knit Now and it was accepted! The pattern has been published this week in issue 4 – I was so excited when it landed on my door mat, I have been carrying it around & showing it off ever since.

Menten Scarf

Menten

I love small shawls worn as scarves, they are perfect for keeping your neck cosy warm. MentenSometimes they are a bit too triangular for me and I wanted a long, shallow triangle rather than a deep one.  So I knitted this one, and wrote up the pattern. It’s knit lengthways in garter stitch, with a simple lace edge, and will show off a lovely variegated or self-striping yarn. This red one is in 4-ply (sock/fingering weight) yarn but you could knit it any weight from 4-ply to aran (I used Arauacania Ranco Multy shade 337 & 3.25 mm needles).

Evenstar Gloves

Evenstar Gloves
I’ve now knitted a second pair of these, and written up the pattern as I’ve gone along.  There are some minor changes from the originals, but the finished glove is pretty much the same. These long, fingerless gloves were originally created during our Lord of the Rings extended editions watch-a-thon, and are inspired by Arwen as I imagine her from the books.  The beautiful silvery-blue yarn made me think of starlight and of the Evenstar of her people.

You will need 2 x 50g Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK in shade 008 (pattern uses approx 170 m of yarn) and a set of 3.25 mm dpns (or smaller/larger to adjust glove size).  The finished glove fits my traditionally-built arms (wrist = 21 cm around) and the arm measures approx 12 cm to the wrist.

The thumb is made using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s ‘thumb trick’; if you need more information on this see Knitter’s Almanac or this photo-tutorial from A Kitten Knits.

I’m still new to pattern writing so please let me know if there are any errors or problems.

who are you calling a geek?

To great excitement in our house, the new series of Doctor Who1 started last night. With a new ‘monster’, the Adipose babies. On Dr Who Confidential it explained they were cgi-ed but also they had a couple of knitted ones on set. Ooooh. I have white wool, hmmmm … so after a quick rummage in the oddments box I made one. Crocheted rather than knitted (as it’s quicker and I find it easier to improvise in crochet), I worked on it while we watched the ‘old’ Dr Who & the Daleks episodes.

And yes there’s a pattern of sorts available, in case I am not the only crocheting Dr Who fan around.

pattern correction: heterocyclic hat

as As You Lean pointed out in the comments, my original chart misrepresented serotonin (with an octagonal hetero- ring instead of a hexagonal carbon only one).  Then I noticed penicillin had the same octagon-for-hexagon error.  I have now amended the chart and uploaded a new version on the original pattern post.

mug cosy pattern
