just looking

I know, I know, I really don’t need any new hobbies right now. I have to write 5,000 words  about crab shell chemistry by the middle of next month. But that doesn’t mean I can’t look at borrowed and ebayed books about new hobbies I might be interested in taking up if I ever do graduate.

I may have done a little bit of sewing this weekend, including first ever zip installation using my new zipper foot, but if I did the results would be embargoed.

Still doing very little non-study related reading, so here comes another chemistry teaser …

Ozone (O3) occurs throughout the atmosphere, but only ever in trace amounts.  Indeed, if all the ozone contained in the first 60 km or so of the atmosphere could be brought down and assembled at the Earth’s surface, it would form a layer only some 3 mm thick.

I’m spending a lot of time with my text books at the moment, so I haven’t got on to a new reading book and am still reading Guns, Germs & Steel. So this teaser is from my text book.

This folding pattern is known as higher-order structure, and it means that every single molecule of the enzyme will have precisely the same convoluted three-dimensional structure.  The enzyme is held in this shape by hydrogen-bonding, and a number of other intramolecular interactions.

Sorry for lack of posting this week, I’ve been mostly either working or sleeping.  I think my body is still working on the last of the Irish lurgy, leaving me too tired to knit (!) most evenings.  Anyways, here is the Tuesday teaser, and hopefully knitting productivity will pick up soon.

He wondered what Mum and Dad would think about having a donkey in the house, or at any rate in the garden, especially so soon after the penguin.  On the other hand, Mum had always said he must be kind to animals.
