To help clear the sinuses…breathe like this….

Every night I hum lullabies to my little boy as he falls asleep.  The past few days I have been suffering with major sinus yuck! It struck me late Wednesday night.  By thursday I was in sinusitis hell.  As bedtime drew near, and I was full into the symptoms of stuffy nose, scratchy throat and itchy ears, I dreaded the thought of singing him to sleep.  However, after a few moments of humming him to sleep, I realized I could breathe…wow!!!  Then, the lightbulb went off.  I remembered my teacher Nancy Clark leading us through bhramari breathing when she noticed most of her students sniffling and coughing through class.  This is a breathing technique commonly referred to as the bee breath.  Following is a pretty good link I found explaining bhramari in more detail.  Below are the basics.

OH, another few useful tips for feeling better, thanks to the great advice of friends.  Drink warm water with as much lemon juice as you can stand, sweetened with pure maple syrup or honey.  Neti pot, neti pot, neti pot…but when sinuses are getting the better of you, add a drop or two of tea tree oil to your salt and water.  Nothing beats a box of super soft kleenex.  Chicken soup.

Bhramari: Sit comfortably. Close the ears with your thumbs, rest your index fingers on your forehead and close your eyes covering them lightly with your middle and ring fingers.  Breathing through your nose, inhale to a count of 4 (or whatever is a comfortable length) and exhale for twice that amount or two counts more than your inhale.  Don’t force your breathing.   Once you are comfortable with the breath and count, begin to make a sound like a bee….mmmmmmmmmm (not zzzzzzzz)  for the length of your exhale, getting louder with each breath.  Do this for as many rounds as you can or at least 5 minutes.  Once you finish, aaaaaahhhh, enjoy the beauty of being able to breathe.

Chair Yoga CD

The Chair Yoga CD is complete!  I can’t believe it is finally here!  Joseph Clark did an amazing job on the music and Bill Kelley did an amazing job pulling it all together.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  I am currently selling them at The Red Shoes for $10 a CD.  Looking into other venues for displaying and selling and in conversation with possible publishing options.  It feels good to see this come to fruition.   Chair yoga is an excellent way to bring the wonderful benefits of yoga to people with limited physical capabilities, the elderly, injured and those undergoing medical treatment that has left them fatigued and weakened physically.  It was through the loving help and support of friends and colleagues that we are able to put this offering out into the world.  More to come…

Suggestions for relieving tension

“Nothing to fear, but fear itself…”

As I prepare for the upcoming workshops, my anxiety level is increasing.  Spinal twists are an excellent way to relieve this tension.  They work the stomach helping to release stress toxins, they allow aggressiveness to surface and dissipate ,and they help clear the mind and bring balance to the body.  Lion pose is another great stress reliever.  This pose not only feels ridiculous and brings a certain levity back to life, but it exhales toxins and rids the body of stored tension.  The vocal exercise of lion pose is one of the healthiest ways to relieve tension as we “voice” and release our nervousness.   Cat/cow is an excellent way to align the spine, stretch through the front and back body and reduce adrenaline that accumulates in the body when we are anxious and stressed.  Closing a physical practice with nadi shodna/alternate nostril breathing is the icing on the cake for bringing peace, balance and focus back into the breath, back into the body, and back into life.  Settled stomach, open heart, open voice and centered mind.

Upcoming Events

August 28th, I’ll be facilitating a prenatal workshop at The Red Shoes from 9:00am-12:00pm.  Yoga helps to safely prepare the body for labor, helps ease physical discomforts associated with carrying your baby, and provides a means for alleviating emotional stress.  We will explore the ways to adjust a yoga practice to fit your body’s needs as well as introduce techniques for bringing about a still mind and settled nerves.

September 4th, I’ll be leading a yoga demonstration on the steps of the Louisiana State Capital for GYN cancer awareness.  This is an event conceived through the dedication and activism of Gloria Graham.  No yoga experience is required and all are invited to attend.  There will be a light fare breakfast and water available.  Educational material will be handed out.  This event will begin at 9:00 am with introductory comments and recognition of GYN cancer survivors.  Media will be present.  Class will be taught with respect to hot Louisiana weather.  Please come and bring everyone you know!

It’s been a while…

It has been a long time since I have been active on this blog.  I allowed other life attentions to take my time.  The latest endeavors in the yoga world include the process of setting up an interactive website.  I hope to have yoga class downloads available, show off some beautiful jewelry handcrafted by a beautiful  and dear friend of mine and keep you up to date with class times and upcoming workshops.  With the constant help, intervention and support of loving people, this will have the intention of founding an accessible yoga tool that you can access and apply to your daily life.  The current CD Chair Yoga is still on hold until I can get the finished product in my hand…hopefully that will happen by the beginning of the week.  Agame Yoga and Meditation Center on Acadian Thrwy just had their grand opening.  I will be teaching a Monday night at 7 -8:15 class and a Friday morning 8:30-9:45 class.  This is definetly a place to visit, take class, meditate and share in community.  Phi Troung is the heart of this endeavor and she has embraced community and we are embracing her and all of her good intentions.  The center has a great, cozy feel to it and offers a variety of classes, times and a union of well minded, open hearted people to come together and celebrate the gift of everyday.  Check it out at agameymc.com.  I will set an intention to get back in the groove with posting.  Until then, as always, I welcome and enjoy your thoughts, comments and questions.  Namaste.
