Get Smarter. Way Smarter

Two super kick ass discoveries today that will no doubt eat up unforeseen chunks of my time for the next year:

Academic Earth

One of Time Magazine’s 50 Best Websites of 2009. You can watch video lectures from top profs at the nation’s most respected universities like MIT, Stanford and such. Organized nicely, searchable, and best of all–FREE. The other cool part? The site was built by some friends at Electric Pulp.

Scientific Speed Reading

A (kind of golden oldie) blog post by Tim Ferris on “How to Read 300% Faster in 20 Minutes.” Seriously. Haven’t given it a shot yet, but will. Then, look out stack of books sitting on my desk. You. Are. Toast.

Traffic of Hope.

This just in: bartblog reached an all time high in one-day traffic on Tuesday. 27 readers from somewhere out there in cyberspace. We have no idea who the hell you are, but God bless ya. We’re well on our way to 1 million readers, right?

Lesson: If you want at least 27 (mostly) beautiful people to read your blog in one day, have your 5-year-old send out an email to all your family telling them about it. Thanks for the promo, Hope. My little marketer…

Get Blogging and stuff.

We’ve had a couple readers ask how to do their own blog (yes, Auntie M.P., I’m bloggin to you). It’s pretty simple (assuming you all can spell and type–guess that leaves a few people out). We use WordPress, but there are lots of other options, like Blogger, Typepad, and Squarespace. WordPress and Blogger are free. So far, I love WordPress. We use Typepad at work–it has more cool features, but for simple, easy use, I don’t think you can beat WordPress.

There’s other cool stuff you can do with our blog, too. Like leave comments (by clicking–you guessed it–“comments”), or send us links to your webpage, blog or online pics. We’ll set up a “Family Links” page as soon as all you yahoos start sending us stuff. You can also subscribe to our feed (for those of you thinking “W.T.F.,” go here).

One other thing. We’re adults, so don’t be shy. Type like you talk at a family get together or party with friends. OK, when refering to me or anything I may have said or done, talk like you do at church (Mom might be reading…).

Kickass toy in Backpack

I use a really great organization web app (software based on the web instead of on your computer) called Backpack. It’s free (for most features) and I use it every single day–you should try it. They just added a brand spankin new calendar that’s a lot like Googles’s, but way more simple (and therefore better). Anyway…Someone named Ali just built a super cool tool for Backpack. Ali calls it voiceNotes for Backpack. I can just call a phone number (in Denver, I think) and leave myself a voicemail mesage. Then voiceNotes puts that message on my personal backpack page for me. Pretty cool.
