As you've probably already heard, a group of Japanese and English manga publishers just announced a coalition to fight manga scans and scanlations. To keep myself from starting pointless arguments with strangers all over the internet, I'm just going to post my thoughts here.

IN CONCLUSION. I like scanlations. I do not like people using them as an excuse to not buy things, and I am in support of companies minimizing them (because let's be honest, they will never shut down determined scanlators) if they focus on titles that are actually available legally in English and continue to do a good or better job with their own products.

Colossalcon both destroyed and restored my faith in AMVs. Destroyed when, during Karaoke, I saw only horrible ones -- when did your Naruto pictures folder in a slideshow played over a song become an AMV? Why does it even make sense to have stray fansubs in your AMV when you can download raws, buy the DVDs (in the cases of licensed series), turn off the subtitles (possible in about 50% of fansubs now, I'd say), or even zoom in a bit so the subtitles are off of the screen? I assumed that the people running the panel were using whatever they could find fastest since it was just for karaoke, but the sheer fact that so many of these AMVs exist is kind of ridiculous.

However, they also played some kickass AMVs while the judges were judging the cosplay contest. And thus my faith was restored.

Incidentally, I bought pretty everything that I wanted (that was reasonably priced) in the dealers' room and only spent about half of my money. I need to find some cool kid fandoms again. I got the first two Haruhi Suzumiya novels and the first volumes of Bokurano and From Erioca with Love, the Gankutsuou dj "Femme Fatale" (yeah, it's scanlated, but I had to get it anyway because... /nosbleed), an Utena fanart print, and three trading figures: Sakura and Tomoyo from a CCS set, and Seishirou from X from the Clamp in 3Dland set.

I almost made a post about how hot and dehydrated and yucky I felt a few days ago, but for some reason I didn't. THIS IS PROBABLY A GOOD THING.

Anyway, Happy Easter, everyone! Alternative, Happy Cheap Candy Eve! Even though I have to go back to class tomorrow and I haven't done anything to get ready for my stage managing stuff, I am in too much of a candy coma to care!

So I randomly joined the KazeKi Yahoo! group and read old forum posts. From people who know Japanese. And my brain broke a few times.

ANYWAY this somehow led to me doing the afterstory in thumbnail theatre-style. Except without thumbnails. For now.

Jules' fiancée is named Charlotte and his sister is named Marie in my headcaon. Yup.

"Fantagraphics has signed an agreement with Shogakukan to launch a full manga line edited and curated by Matt Thorn."

Matt Thorn, guys. Matt Thorn. If you haven't heard of Matt Thorn, he can be called a scholar of shoujo manga. He's translated manga in the past (mostly when it was still flipped) and he's got some amazing articles on his website.

He also may, in fact, have the best taste in manga of any living human being. He talks about the Year 24 Group/Fabulous 49ers (Takemiya, Hagio, Ikeda, etc.) a lot, and his reccomended manga include Heart of Thomas, Glass Mask, Rose of Versailles, and Kaze to Ki no Uta oh my god I would give a kidney for this to be licensed.

There is a 95% chance that I will be buying everything in this line blind, although the confirmed titles have been Hourou Musuko/Wandering Son by Shimura Takako (not technically confirmed, but showing up on Amazon so there you go) the amazingly sweet and relatable story of two children exploring their gender identities, and A Drunken Dream and Other Stories by God herself Moto Hagio, which is a collection of some of her recent short stories (whether it will include the two that have been scanlated, I can't say). Both are quite recent, but I'm crossing my fingers that they'll do well and later titles in the line will include classics (and even if they don't? DUDE, Takako and Hagio!). Fantagraphics, from what I can tell, publishes niche comics from around the world, and I think these are both titles that will appeal to a non-otaku comic reading audience, so I'm expecting good things.

So, good people of Livejournal, a delude of manga awesome is on the horizon. So BUY AND READ THESE OR I WILL PUNT YOU. B| if you live somewhere in which you can obtain USA-published manga please do consider picking these up. They are fantastic and will be worth every penny. And for those of you that already understand my joy... come, fangirl with me!

Oh my God it's turning into spring, eeeee~ I never realize how much winter is getting to me until the sun comes out again. It's tea-shirt weather today! (This makes me want to eat ice cream and shop! Then again, everything does. Remind me why I expect to survive as a starving artist again?)

You know what I want, LJ? A million dollars, princesscurls to not be in the most awkward timezone ever, and a new scanlated chapter of KazeKi. Mostly the last one, though. They're almost to bb Rosemariné, they can't slow down now!

...maybe I should complain about this after I've finished watching Oniisama e... and reading Heart of Thomas and the scanlated bits of Tenma no Ketsuzoku.

I saw In the Heights on tour on Saturday. My thoughts are as follows:

It's the spiritual successor to Rent in a lot of ways: tells about a group of people that are under-represented in fiction, focuses on characterization over plot, has a distinct slice-of-life feeling despite focusing on major events in the characters' lives, has a theme of enjoying what you have in life since friends are more important than being rich, tons of earworms... I can definitely see why the young theatre crowd loves it.

The plotline is kind of a mess, but the characterization is amazing, which is all that matters to me. I definitely have a crush on the main character (Usnavi) now, for one thing: he wears fabulous hats, he's a total sweetheart, and girls say that he reminds them of their grandma (...he and Jules would get along, not gonna lie). Really, there isn't a single character that I dislike. Sonny (his cousin) so adorably wants to be a tough guy and I just want to hug him; even though Vanessa had a surprisingly small amount of time onstage (considering she's Usnavi's love interest and all), it's easily to follow her story; and Nina is really easy to understand and relate to without being too much of an everywoman. And I actively ship the canon pairings! (This is amazing for me.)

I was also really impressed from the accuracy of the setting -- I haven't looked it up yet, but I get the impression that the writer grew up in a poor Hispanic New York neighborhood; there are neighborhoods here that are quite similar and the Spanglish (...wow, spellcheck knows that's a word) is exactly what I hear on walks. The music is wonderfully Latin/R&B/rap but still has a distinctly modern musical theatre flavor which means it wins at both fitting the show and making me want to dance.

And there's a movie coming out, this year if IMDB is to be believed. I will be telling everyone I know to watch it when it comes out, yes I will. Until then, though, if the US tour is coming near you, it's awesome and definitely worth going to see live!

I set out last night to decide if Jules would have a middle name and what it would be (he would, and I think Jules Gabriel de Ferrier sounds nice) and ended up spending several hours researching random stuff. Specifically, conventions of French naming and address, then family coats of arms (which are impossible to research for fictional characters, by the way). God I'm a loser. :> I did, however, learn (vaguely mentioned, but it was on several websites) that there was a high-class Ferrier family in Normandy at some point in history. FTW.

(And I'm not even DONE with this researching solely because KazeKi got me interested thing yet! I still want to learn more about attitudes toward homosexuality and sex back then. Also, tea. Historically accurate fanfic and RP is good, yes?)

I made a graphics community when I was musing about it a few months ago, but I just now decided to actually use it. I'm making it a dumping ground for all of my fandom creative endeavours, though, so my personal journal can just be for actual journal sorts of things, and graphics/fic/fanmixes can go to hypergalaxy.

Feel free to follow it, since I won't be linking to new posts in my personal journal. I will be posting in the appropriate fandom communities, so you can just keep an eye on those, if you want.

And... I think that's it! I'm still not done with the profile, but other than that it's pretty much set up. If anyone has tips for running such a community (probably not, since I'm not setting out to be a prolific iconer or anything, I've just been making a lot of crap lately) then do tell me. Tips for making better stuff, would be great, too!
