THE FINAL CONTRACT by MAY PANG

At the end of 1974, after three years of court battles and acrimony, the final dissolution of The Beatles was about to happen.

The meeting was scheduled for December 19 at New York's Plaza Hotel - ironically, this was the first place the group stayed in America in 1964.

George Harrison was in New York on his Dark Horse tour. Paul and Linda McCartney came in, and of course John and I were already in the city. Only Ringo was missing, but he had signed the documents in England.

Julian was with us for the Christmas holiday and all was calm, all was bright. John was even planning to join George on stage during his concert at Madison Square Garden.

Gathered around a huge table were George, his lawyer and business manager; the McCartneys, with Paul's in-laws and lawyers; Ringo's lawyer and business manager; Neil Aspinall, of Apple, with two sets of company lawyers (one for America and one for Britain); and John's lawyer Harold Seider and his team.

Harold told me that after a while, George said out loud what everyone was thinking: "Where's John?"

"Good question," replied Harold. Harold left the room to call John, who wouldn't come to the phone.

I was with John and it was up to me to tell Harold he had decided not to attend the meeting. Although John was concerned with shouldering a major tax burden because he lived in the United States, I could sense there was a bit more on his mind. His official reason for not showing was 'the stars aren't right'.

George, already in a dour mood because his tour was getting poor reviews, went ballistic. He started yelling at Harold, as did all the other lawyers in the room.

Then George picked up the phone and called John. I answered and asked if he wanted John, but he barked, "No! Just tell him whatever his problem is, I started this tour on my own and I'll end it on my own!" before slamming down the receiver. John was listening over my shoulder.

George's rage didn't last long. Julian went to George's concert the next day and returned home with a message saying: "All's forgiven, George loves you and he wants you to come to his party tonight."

We did go to the party at the Hippopotamus Club, where George, John, and Paul all hugged.

John, Julian and I left New York the following day to spend Christmas in Florida. On December 29, 1974, the voluminous documents were brought down to John in Florida by one of Apple's lawyers.

"Take out your camera," he joked to me. Then he called Harold to go over some final points.

When John hung up the phone, he looked wistfully out the window. I could almost see him replaying the entire Beatles experience in his mind.

He finally picked up his pen and, in the unlikely backdrop of the Polynesian Village Hotel at Disney World, ended the greatest rock 'n' roll band in history by simply scrawling John Lennon at the bottom of the page.

BEATLES ADDRESS BOOK HITS AUCTION IN COTSWOLDS

Image

A miniature address book featuring the complete set of Beatles autographs is scheduled for auction near Bristol in the coming days.

Originally produced as a promotional souvenir for a 1960s Italian eatery, the book was snatched up by a quick-thinking waitress when the Fab Four unexpectedly arrived for a meal.

The encounter took place at Oddi’s Restaurant on Goldhawk Road in Shepherd’s Bush, a West London spot conveniently located near the former BBC Television Centre. According to family lore, the band had just finished a BBC performance when they stopped in to eat, leading the waitress to ask for their signatures on the closest item she could find.

Decades later, this unique piece of memorabilia is headed to the Wotton Auction Rooms for a two-day sale on December 30 and 31.

Despite its small size—measuring only 10cm x 7cm—the front page clearly displays the names of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The back of the book is embossed with the restaurant’s original address and phone number, marking it as a relic of a venue once popular with celebrities.

Auction house managing director Joseph Trinder describes the find as a "fabulous piece of British music history," estimating its value between £800 and £1,200, though its historical significance could drive the price even higher.

‘IN MY LIFE’ MEMORIES IN MUSIC FOR MERSEYSIDE

  • The Beatles Story announces plans to support individuals living with dementia in the local Merseyside area.
  • Music is a very powerful tool used by the likes of music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins to provide support for people living with dementia.
  • The Beatles Story to set up ‘In My Life Memory Café’ among other activities to support local community.

The Beatles Story and Fab4 Café are busy working on plans to support the local community of people living with dementia from 2026.

Through raising awareness of the power of music for memories, the establishment of a regular memory café named ‘In My Life Memory Café,’ tailored experiences in the award-winning Beatles Story exhibition, and outreach opportunities for staff, the attraction hopes to inspire memories and offer support to people with dementia in Liverpool and beyond.

Evaluations made by music therapy charity, Nordoff and Robbins, in 2023 and 2024 found that, among other positive results, 87% of individuals living with dementia found that music therapy enhanced their quality of life. The Beatles Story plans to bring these findings into the local Merseyside area, providing support through the lens of The Beatles and the 1960s and nurturing precious memories through music.

The Beatles Story team aims to blend proven research on music and dementia with the memories of the 1960s that are ready and waiting to be rekindled at The Beatles Story museum.

The announcement comes as part of The Beatles Story’s ongoing sustainability and community endeavours, which secured the attraction a silver Green Tourism award in June 2025, and is now quickly heading towards a gold recognition.

The Beatles Story team are encouraging care providers and institutions to get in touch if their new dementia scheme may benefit the individuals that they provide care for.
