Orange by Ichigo Takano

This is available in five volumes, and also in two omnibus editions (the second included a backstory which I didn't get into), but it reads as one story.

It opens with Naho receiving a letter. It says it's from her future self, that a new boy will arrive in class and sit beside her, and she must not ask him to walk home, because he's no longer with them in the future.

Not knowing what to believe, she joins with her friends in asking

Boy Scouts Handbook - First Edition

The first edition. A hodgepodge perhaps chiefly of interest in what is included. Games. Short history and civics lessons. Discussions of wildlife and tracking. First aid. How to earn badges.

Some articles show that science has marched on from the day.

Sayings from Indians are invariably in crude English, but also invariably are to teach wise things to the boys.

I noted that in the fire section, they discussed the danger of wildfires, but didn't mention that first of all, you ensure you build your fire on bare earth. Anything burnable will carry the fire away, and roots are particularly dangerous. So, health and safety information may also be out of date.

We finished reading this cookbook today. It's the inspiring kind that makes me want to hole up in the kitchen and bake until the whole house smells like fall. It uses a lot of autumn ingredients such as apples, pears, sweet potatoes, and warming spices. The recipes range from simple to elaborate. In addition to the classics there are some with twists and others that are more unusual. We found this cookbook at Ollie's, so if you have that store in your locale, look for it there.

The final reading program with more elocution exercises. The standards by which the choices were made are laid out in the preface.

So again the interesting thing to the modern reader is probably the choices. Scientific, religious, political, historical -- poems, speeches, essays --

The religious is sometimes generically theistic, sometimes Christian, sometimes specifically Protestant (in a passage where it is explicitly stated that the contemplative vocation is non-existent).

Sanders' Union Speaker: Containing a Great Variety of Exercises for Declamation, Both in Prose and Verse by Charles Walton Sanders

Another collection of extracts for the scholar. This differs from his Union Readers and New Readers in that it is, overtly, aimed at performance before crowds. Some have directions on how they are to be staged, down to the observation that the poem about being a man is more comic when told by a young boy than an older one.

Many more comic pieces. Also, the time of publication is clear, since many pieces directly address the war. More speeches and poems and fewer essays. But its selection does cast quite a light on the times.
