I have no idea what manufacturer this model is, when it was produced or anything…but I would like to own one. If anyone could shed some light on this particular piece I would be forever grateful!

Looking For OOP Model
Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy, Reviews / Uncategorized / Misc. on July 31, 2010 by botwtOOP Citadel Miniatures’ Bilbo Baggins Miniatures
Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on July 31, 2010 by botwtTook me a while to hunt down these miniatures, but finally found both of the Citadel Miniatures’ Bilbo Baggins models from the mid 1980’s…now would like to aquire Thorin and probably Gollum.
The sculpts are brutal I must say, but I do like collecting odd, rare and OOP models. Oh, and these models are tiny…these are 10mm bases I have them photographed on, not the standard 25mm.
I am still uncertain how I want to paint these up, and even more confused as to what to base them on.
Suggestions are always welcome!
Outlaw Posse (Legends Of The Old West)
Posted in Wild West / Historical on July 31, 2010 by botwtHaving only played one kind of miniatures game (The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game that Games Workshop produces) I decided on picking up the Legends of the Old West by Warhammer Historical about a year ago. The smaller scale of the armies and more liberal movement of the game pieces is what really impressed me with LotR, and LotOW is basically the same sort of gaming style, but offers upgrades to your army (posse) almost like a RPG.
As my hobby room lay in the throes of disrepair, the township of Perdition’s Gulch remains in its bare resin state awaiting assembly. However the townsfolk are slowly nearing completion, as are their nemesis…MacCrimmon’s Damned, my outlaw posse.
Yes, that is a dachshund in the gang. 🙂
Here is my latest Old West model…very Sam Elliott like.
The Shire ~ a Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game Force
Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on July 29, 2010 by botwtI have played in several games (and in one tournament) with a Hobbit/Dunedain SBG army. All told I have won 2 games, and had a draw against a dwarven army…so they can win, but you need to have sound strategy and have alot of patience and play smart when using this kind of army. I personally love it because of the challenge…just building the strongest army and thumping across the battlefield doesn’t fill me with pride when I win. Winning with a bunch of Shire rats is a blast and gives the ego a nice stroking, plus your opponent’s stressed out face is priceless to watch when everything is going right for you.
Because of model maximums at certain game points limits it can be interesting trying to fill out an army comprised of hobbits. First off, you definitely need to take Gandalf, with his Blinding Light spell he can keep your hobbits alive alot longer. Another must…Dunedain Rangers of the North. Because hobbits (and hobbit heroes) are so cheap you need to fill in the points with higher point units (and stronger ones too)…Dunedain come in very handy for this. Their firing power and Might points are almost as much of a must have for a Shire army as Gandalf is. Aragorn/Strider is another must have in high point games…very effective I must say. Next…forget about the Shire Militia…stick strictly to the Shirriffs and Archers…more bang for your 4 points. A hornblower (or two, maybe three depending on the army points) is another must. Spread these guys about the field and as long as one of these little buggers is running about you can gain +1 to your hobbits courage (they don’t stack if you have more than one hornblower). Hobbit heroes…take ’em…take ’em all if you have too to fill up your points. One of the hobbit heroes you will want to make sure you have is Meriadoc, Knight of the Mark with his Horn of the Riddermark…in conjunction with your hobbit hornblower this will add a total of +2 to your hobbits courage, most handy for charges!
This is a very fun (and frustrating if you let it get to you) army to play with, but the reward of winning a battle is worth the zillions of dollars spent on this kind of army. GW really needs to make a plastic set of hobbits.
Here are a few shots of my army.
Gandalf, Bilbo and Strider (each of these three have been converted and modified)
Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took (again some modifications to these to make them unique)
Dunedain Rangers of the North (winter garb)
Farmer Maggot, Fredegar ‘Fatty’ Bolger and Paladin Took (Fatty and Took have been modified)
Hobbit Shirriffs (one conversion and use of a militia as a shirriff)
Finally here are a few Hobbit Archers (two conversions one modification)
As you can see I like to convert and modify these models…being that there are just a few different poses of each style. Archers are pretty easy to make…just get the shortbows and quivers from the plastic Warg Rider sprues and add them to any hobbit…above you can see I used a spare Fatty Bolger and a spare Meriadoc for two of these new poses.
With the shirriffs pretty much anything can work as long as he isn’t carrying a bow, so the militia units can either take the place of or be converted into shirriffs…just don’t waste your time using them as militia, they aren’t worth their points.
Lesser hobbit heroes are great to use too, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, Fatty Bolger, Farmer Maggot (and his hounds) and Paladin Took…all well worth their points.
Here is a roster that I used in the tournament and won 1 out of 4 games with it including a draw (1-2-1).
750 Pts – The Shire Roster (SBG)
Hero (5#, 490 Pts)
1 Aragorn / Strider @ 175 Pts
Mighty Hero; Hand Weapon
1 Gandalf the Grey @ 170 Pts
Glamdring; Narya; Staff of Power; Blinding Light; Command; Immobilise; Sorcerous Blast; Strengthen WIll; Terrifying Aura; Hand Weapon
1 Bilbo Baggins @ 90 Pts
Resistance to Magic; Throw Stones; Sting; Mithril Coat; One Ring
1 Meriadoc Brandybuck- Knight of Mark @ 30 Pts
Resistance to Magic; Throw Stones; Hand Weapon; Armour; Shield
1 Peregrin Took – Guard of the Citadel @ 25 Pts
Resistance to Magic; Throw Stones; Hand Weapon; Armour
Minor Hero (4#, 96 Pts)
1 Dunedain @ 24 Pts
Hand Weapon; Bow
1 Dunedain @ 24 Pts
Hand Weapon; Bow
1 Dunedain @ 24 Pts
Hand Weapon; Bow
1 Dunedain @ 24 Pts
Hand Weapon; Bow
Hobbits (24#, 96 Pts)
24 Hobbit Shirriffs @ 96 Pts
Resistance to Magic; Throw Stones; Hand Weapon
Hobbits (12#, 68 Pts)
11 Hobbit Bowmen @ 44 Pts
Resistance to Magic; Throw Stones; Unarmed; Shortbow
1 Hobbit Bowmen @ 24 Pts
Resistance to Magic; Signal Horns; Throw Stones; Unarmed; Shortbow
Total Roster Cost: 750
Now, I did soak alot of points into Aragron in this list, but it was the first time I used him in a Shire army…surprisingly he did well and more than made up for the points I used on him.
Hope I inspired you to think differently about Hobbits on the battlefield. 🙂
Bilbo Baggins’ Dice Bag & Dice
Posted in Lord of the Rings / Fantasy on July 28, 2010 by botwtSome of you may have seen this before, but I thought I would post it up here on the blog for others to check out.
I wanted to have a one-of-a-kind dice bag and a set of hero dice for my Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game Hobbit/Dunedain army so I commissioned the dice from Chessex and had the dice bag created by an online company called The Gamer’s Bag (they just recently closed up shop).
The Chessex dice are fantastically detailed and had them done up to resemble Bilbo’s Red Book of Westmarch from the LotR films. I can highly recommend Chessex as a company…topnotch stuff and reasonably priced too!
The dice bag was also based on the Red Book of Westmarch, but sadly I couldn’t get it in a red leather…but all in all I am quite happy with the cloth version I purchased. With the custom embroidery and shipping it only ran me $25 USD.
Here is a shot of it with all of the styles of my Free Peoples Dice. Jeweled Fellowship, Opaque Fellowship, Rohan, Gondor, Dwarven, One Ring Website custom dice and the Baggins dice. The red of the bag looks very bright, but actually it is much darker…I even tried to color correct it with Photoshop, but no luck. No matter, at least you can see what it looks like.
Wookiees!
Posted in Sci-Fi on July 27, 2010 by botwtMy newest additions, but I think this here will cap my Star Wars Collection with these Wookiees that I’ve picked up. A Wookiee Berserker, Tarfful and Merumeru have arrived and having looked at the Chewbacca miniatures I was having a hard time deciding on them…but did find a variant from the Rebel Storm set that I like (just waiting on him to be delivered).
And here is what the the soon to arrive Chewie will look like
The funny thing with the paint jobs is that they almost work in reverse order from the review I did on the Star Wars Miniatures. The most common model looks pretty good actually, while the two Wookiee leaders have some real issues with the painting, sculpting and bent weaponry. Eh, who am I kiddin’, they will be fun to fix up anyway.
Star Wars Miniatures Review
Posted in Reviews / Uncategorized / Misc. on July 24, 2010 by botwtSeeing how I have been posting several of these models here on the blog I thought I would write a review for those of you who may not own any of these miniatures.
Now I only have ever owned a few of these miniatures, but from what I’ve seen thus far they are a mediocre lot, the Knight Models 30mm range is much nicer, however very limited in selection. Overall some of the sculpts are decent and salvageable by repainting them, other sculpts are just plain terrible. One thing I have noticed is that the more rare the model, the better off the sculpt is…however the more common models are not much to write home about.
Another drawback to these plastic models is their soft, pliable nature. Once bent they seem to retain that position…I have heard that dipping them into boiling water can straighten out the bent limbs, weapons, lightsabres, etc but have never really tried this remedy.
The paint jobs are horrible…even some of the more rare and better sculpted miniatures are hideous, but that is what you get when you go for a pre-painted miniature in most cases.
Now, I am not knocking this game or the models (for the most part), just giving an unbiased view of the product from a purely aesthetic view point for those who may not have had the chance to purchase these now OOP miniatures. Again I don’t play this game, but do collect some of the miniatures and you can find nearly all of them on eBay reasonably cheap for common types (the more rare ones will run you a few dollars).
Here are a few examples of these miniatures:
Qui-Gon Jinn is a pretty decent sculpt while Obi-Wan…not so much, and you can get a pretty good feel for how these models are painted up.
Here I have Saesee Tiin and Zuckuss (two fairly nice sculpts) being redone.
The character cards are well made and have some great artwork on them (here is one of Chewbacca I Googled).
All in all I am pretty happy with 80% of the models I’ve purchased from this Star Wars range, not pleased at all with the paint jobs however…but that is just me. If you do purchase some of these models (and I recommend doing so) just do your homework on them before wasting your hard earned cash (I Googled the hell out of these models looking for decent photos of the miniatures…they are very hard to find, so some may just be very nice and you won’t even know unless you buy one)…and if you are like me, a collector, you will get some joy out of repainting these buggers, just don’t expect great detail from them, even the better sculpted ones.
Rating of a 6 out of 10
Predator (or Heresy’s Limited Edition Hurn) Review
Posted in Reviews / Uncategorized / Misc. on July 23, 2010 by botwtHere is Heresy Miniatures Hurn model. It is limited to 1000 pieces and once I saw it I knew I had to make him part of my collection.
Review: He comes with 4 different hands (one holding a spear), 4 choices of forearms, shoulder laser cannon and folded spear to be mounted onto his back. The sculpting is excellent (especially his face), but not overly detailed which is nice…sometimes less is more (taking notes GW?) and he is big…I have him standing on a 40mm base right now (which is included with the model). His joints fit together well, I really didn’t have to do much at all to make sure he assembled nicely. As for mold lines, hardly any at all. He comes in at £8.00, but for a limited edition model…not too bad.
Rating out of 10 on the BotWT scale, this model gets a solid 8.
A must have for you Sci-Fi geeks out there! 🙂
Not-Inquisitor Lord Torquemada Coteaz
Posted in Sci-Fi on July 23, 2010 by botwtI don’t play 40K but I do like some of the models that GW produces for that game. So I picked up a used Inquisitor Lord Torquemada Coteaz off eBay and slightly modified him to have a power fist (I think that is what it is called) instead of his bird.
I was thinking of also painting him in the Space Wolves color scheme, but not sure if I can pull it off, but will try.
Here is the conversion as it stands presently; he is based on one of Scibor’s resin bases.
There are some gaps that need to be filled with green stuff and bit of ballast under the stone he is standing on and the resin base to fill up that spot.
Plo Koon (Redux)
Posted in Sci-Fi on July 22, 2010 by botwtDisgusted by the first attempt (even though I know it looks better in real life than the photograph) I decided to completely reinvent the color palate.
Remembering how the original ’70s Obi-Wan Kenobi toy looked I went with a kinda reddish color to the robes, with a dark tunic underneath.
This color scheme gave me what I was after and I think offers a drastic improvement overall.
Still a few mistakes here and there, but at least this version I feel more comfortable with.
Comments and critique always welcome. 🙂
