Mini juice fast and a meal plan.

26 Aug

This week, I have dipped back into a flare.  Fevers are back and higher than normal.  Lots of abnormal fatigue that has caused me to stay in bed more than what I had been doing. And other symptoms.  Y’all don’t want or need to know the specifics…just documenting that I am in a flare.

Today, I am starting a juice fast.  Probably just today because tomorrow is Monday and I teach twice.  Can’t really juice fast during boot camp and Body Pump.  Nowadays, a lot of people are calling smoothie fasts juice fasts.  I am not doing smoothies today.  I am JUST juicing.  If you don’t know the difference, smoothies take the entire fruit/veg and blend it up.  You get all of that good fiber and everything.  With juice, you send it through a juicer and ONLY the liquid comes out.  I am doing this to give my digestive system a whole day off.  I will get all of those super fresh nutrients going straight into my blood stream.  Tomorrow, my plan is to juice/smoothie fast until dinner, giving me a full 48 hours of not eating real food.

I wish I had a few more days to do this.  I have toyed with the idea of juice fasting for a day or two on a regularly scheduled interval.  But life happens and it hasn’t really worked out.  If you want to join me, let me know!

Now, on to the meal plan for the week!

  • Monday: Making Aarti Sequeira’s (Don’t you just LOVE her?  I want to be her friend!!) Chana Masala or Chickpea Curry.  Both names work, according to her. I am serving it with brown basmati rice and a green salad.  Cooking for us and Hokensons.  I love this dish and have made it before.  It required me going to an Indian market and stocking up on all of the correct spices.  But once I did that initially, now I can make this quickly and easily.
  • Tuesday: Mashed new potatoes with roasted carrots and cauliflower.
  • Wednesday: My dad’s 60th birthday!!!!!!  We will eat together as a family.
  • Thursday: Vegan quesadillas.  Cheese on the kid’s and Luck’s.
  • Friday: What else? Homemade pizza night.

What is on your menu for the week?  Share links and ideas so we can all be inspired!  Here’s to a healthy week!

One..more…week!

28 May

This is the last week of school!!  Yeehaw!  Here is our meal plan this week:

Tho goal for this week is to use up what we have from our produce co-op and leftovers from my juice fast!
Monday: Cilantro lime quinoa with black beans (and tomato and avocado) with mangoes on the side.
Tuesday: Forks Over Knives sweet potato vegan lasagna. No idea if this will be good!  The link is not to the book, but to one blogger who made it successfully.  Obviously, I will make it gluten free and will not use the corn.
Wednesday: Quinoa taco “meat” on taco salad with fresh pineapple and apple slices for us and Hokeys.
Thursday: LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! Celebrating at Pei Wei!
Friday: homemade pizza night….never gets old!
Saturday: Grilling at neighbor’s house! Love summer and friends who still have us over even despite how hard we are to feed!  This neighbor is so sweet, she made me gluten free, vegan blueberry muffins for something at her house yesterday.  So sweet of you, Cortney!

My health is still so so.  The juice fast knocked out all of the symptoms except fever!!  Woohoo!  That fever really does bring me down every afternoon, so I will be happy when that is gone.  Other than that, I am just super fatigued.  Every morning, I have made my smoothies and gagged them down.  My food is my medicine.  And while it isn’t the most socially fun way to eat, it is paying off, bite by bite!

What is on YOUR menu this week?  Do share!  Two  sweet friends heard my pleas for some new ideas and sent me so many that I am just thrilled!  I wanted to try some of them this week, but needed to get through the produce I have on hand!  Thank you, Kathleen and April!

Juice time

23 May

Well, yesterday I got hit by a Mack truck, it seems. All of the sudden, my fever is up, all of my joints hurt so much that going down my stairs is nearly impossible, my chest hurts, my hair is falling out like crazy, my fingers and toes all went numb when I got cold, and so many other things.

All of my travels and stress finally caught up with me.  I will start a juice fast right now. Haven’t eaten today, so juice it will be all of today and tomorrow.  I will decide what to do from there.

Thanks for walking this journey with me! So grateful for a juicer and fruit and that I am not needing to take Prednisone (yet….or hopefully ever?).

Little by little I am learning how much fudging on my diet my body can take.  If you have a favorite juice combo, post it here!  (not smoothies, just juice for now)

Juice!

26 Feb

Stress has a way of creeping in, even when you are doing your best to lay low. The month of February was very hectic for us and me, personally. I took on 2 extra classes per week, subbed a number of times, and we had a bunch of responsibilities for a committee we are on (meetings, scheduling, lots of emailing, etc…). Oh, and Daniella had her birthday party!  It will all come to a close a week from today.  But until then, we press on!

I have been needing caffeine in the afternoons to make it through.  This is frustrating for me because I don’t drink caffeine at all any more.  And I have been hurting all over my body.  Joint pain, as well as muscular pain.

So this weekend, I decided to go on a juice fast.  If you have been following my blog, you know that this is just what I do to end flares or to jump start my body to get rid of symptoms.  So far, it has worked every time.  This time, I took all of the fruits and veggies above and used a fabulous juicer that is on loan from a sweet friend, Heather.  Since yesterday morning, I have been drinking only fresh juice.  I have had beets, cucumbers, rainbow chard, collard greens, granny smith apples, gala apples, green and red grapes, carrots, oranges, and more…

I have explained this before, but the idea is that my body gets a total rest from digestion.  And I juice these fruits and veggies and right away get the awesome nutrients into my blood stream.  And while doing this, I rest.  Yes, I ran a 5k and went to a dinner for the above mentioned committee…but the rest of the weekend is bedrest.  Not unlike most of my weekends. 😉

The green one pictured was collard greens, granny smith apples, green grapes, and cucumbers.  The red one was beets, gala apples, red grapes, rainbow chard, and carrots.  I start with the veggies because they are going to be the strongest.  Then I add in apples and grapes and the sweeter things until I like the juice. Simple as that.

There is very little in this world that tastes as good as fresh juice!

While you should eat all of that fiber that gets thrown away during juicing…there is a time and a place for NOT eating it.  For me, this is it. If you are trying to kick some serious health problems or jump start some weight loss, give this a try. I am no expert, but I can help you with some basics!

Bottoms up!
