Trip to Lima Peru

September 18, 2007

Sylvia and I along with our "adoptive kids", Tim and Mellisa Bolla, left this morning on our trip to Peru. We flew to Houston Texas where we met my sisters, Kayleen Scoville and DeAnn and Granger Olikean. From there we proceeded to Lima. We were picked up at the airport by my brother Layne and Donna. We have been planning this trip for over a year. Layne works for the church finance department and has been in Lima for alittle over a year.

We quickly learned that Lima was not a place we would have any desire to drive in. The driving there in insane and they use thier horns alot while driving, but we were amazed that there really were very few acccidents. They have circles of "death", five roads converging onto this traffic circle. Each road has three lanes and you manuvere around or cross through the traffic to get to the road you want to get off onto. Also, it didnt seem to matter if you were in the center lane and you wanted to turn right or left, you just turned when there was an opening. As far as the speed limit, Layne said that it was what the car in front of you was doing, even down residential streets it wasnt uncommon to be driving at 60 - 70 kph about 40 miles an hour.

We arrived at thier home, which was previously a Mission Home. It is very spacious and accomodated an extra 7 people very nicely. We want Megan and Nathan to know how much we appreciate them giving up thier bedrooms for two weeks.

Donna was surprised this morning by two sisters, whom she is the Visiting Teachers of, that knew of the company coming and wanted to help her clean the house and also one sister was planning on cooking our dinner for us that night. So with the Maids (Mercedes) directions, they went to work on the house. One sister had to leave, but Sister Betty Arbi stayed to fix dinner.

In evening we had to priveledge to go to the Temple in Lima. It is a very beautiful building. Donna had made arrangements with the temple to shift the English speaking evening to Wednesday night so that we could attend that session. The room only held 25 people. Layne said that on Friday and Saturdays that the temple is packed with busses from all over the country with people coming to go to the Temple.

We started out the day by going to a hopsital to visit a Sister that was going to have surgery. Donna is the Relief Society President. We were told that this was one of the nicer Hospitals in Lima, but we realized that it wasnt anything we would like to have to go to for anything. It made us appreciate what we have in the United States, but we also realize that they dont know any difference.

When Donna was done there we proceeded to the Market Place, which is rows and rows of little shops with the people selling thier wares.

In the evening we went to the Sheriton Hotel for a Buffet Dinner and Dance/Music Program. There was all kinds of varieties of food. The program was 2 1/2 hours long and was amazing. Melissa got lots of good picutres, including me when they came and got people out of the audience for one of the last dances. Not sure why I was selected, other than SylviImagea says because I was takingImage lots of pictures.Image
