I’ve been fortunate to get to attend not one but two writing “camps” this year.
The first was Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp – a very intense writing workshop. I’d applied two years ago, but didn’t get in then. This year, though, I did! (Plus I got a scholarship for it, too.) It was in North Carolina, the first week of August this year. The experience was amazing – very intense, exhausting, SO MUCH work, but awesome. Highlights included getting to know my fellow campers and classmates, dinner at Orson Scott Card’s house, finishing a short story in 24 hours (just not the first ones, in my case… but it all worked out), and all the critiquing – seeing so many of the same story problems coming up over and over really helps you start to understand how it works. It’s also encouraging, that all these other talented writers make mistakes too. 🙂
If Boot Camp was all business, David Farland’s Writers’ Death Camp was … a little less so. Or more so, if you’re looking at what we learned in class about target audiences, publishing vs. epublishing, taxes, and other business aspects of writing. But in the writing sense it was more of a retreat, busy, but with less outside pressure. Which is good too. It was held in gorgeous (if chilly in November) St. George, I got to room with three friends from Boot Camp, got to meet many other lovely people, and we did a lot of hiking as well as idea sessions and even writing. 😉 It was a great time where I also learned a lot. (Oh, and the last night we hung in Vegas! See the Lord of the Rings slot machine that I obviously HAD to take a photo of! It’s fantasy!.)
I’m so grateful that I got to go to both of these, especially to my family for supporting me in it.
