You will need JDK 21, 22 or 23 to use the local Camunda 8 starter package. Use your preferred method to install the JDK, or download OpenJDK from its website. 
Please note OpenJDK 24 & 25 are not yet supported.

Install OpenJDK

1. Download the self managed starter package

Download and get familiar with Camunda 8 using the Camunda starter package, which includes everything you need:

  • Desktop Modeler: drag-and-drop workflows, decisions, and forms alongside your IDE.
  • Camunda 8 Run: lightweight all‑in‑one distribution for local development.
  • Getting Started examples: deploy a real workflow in minutes with Java (Spring) and Node.js.

2. Start your developer environment locally

To start your local development cluster, take the following steps:

  1. Unzip the downloaded starter package file
  2. Open the Camunda Modeler
  3. Open your terminal or command line and navigate to the new folder. Run the following command based on your operating system:
Windows
				
					camunda-starter.bat
				
			
macOS & Linux
				
					./camunda-starter.sh
				
			

You will then see a success page with getting started options.
