So I won't lie I think I am losing my mind! Let me explain, most days I wake up in the morning so excited to go to school. Today was not one of those days. In fact, I haven't had one of those day in probably about a week. There are just a few students in my class that are literally going to drive me into the looney bin! Most of my class is made up of the cutest, sweetest kids you have ever met. They do their work, are fun to talk to, say cute things, and in general are darling. A few of my students, however, are turds! I don't know how else to say it. They manipulate the other students in the class, start rumors/fights, stare off into space when they should be working, and in general do not care about school. It is because of these little turds that I haven't wanted to go to school most of this week and today they nearly pushed me over the edge!
I grew up in a family that loves to watch movies. Some of my favorite memories include all 7 of us crowded onto the couch in the basement, quoting movie lines, and eating popcorn while laughing our heads off at a movie we have seen a thousand times. I guess you could say it is a family tradition. Sandlot, A Christmas Story, The Burbs, and Elf are a few family favorite...I digress. OK back to me loosing my mind. I used to laugh during the movie The Incredibles at the part where Dash is in the principal's office getting in trouble for putting a tac on the teacher's chair. I couldn't find a clip to include in this post so I put the dialogue below.
Principal: Thank you for coming in, Mrs. Parr.
Helen: What is this about? Has Dash done something wrong?
Bernie Kropp: He's a disruptive influence and he openly mocks me in front of the class.
Dash: He says.
Bernie Kropp: Look, I know it's you! He puts thumbtacks on my stool.
Helen: You saw him do this?
Bernie Kropp: Well, not really... No, actually not.
Helen: Oh. Then how do you know it was him?
Bernie Kropp: I hid a camera. And this time I got him.
[Plays tape]
Bernie Kropp: See? See? What, you don't see it?
[rewinds tape]
Bernie Kropp: He moves! Right there! Wait, wait... Right *there*! Right as I'm sitting down! I don't know, I don't know how he does it, but-but there's no tack on my stool before he moves, and after he moves, there's a tack! Coincidence? I think not!
Principal: Uh, Bernie...
Bernie Kropp: Don't "Bernie" me! This little rat is guilty!
Principal: You and your son can go now, Mrs. Parr.
Bernie Kropp: You're letting him go *again*? He's guilty! You can see it in his smug little face. Guilty, I say! Guilty! Guilty!
After teaching this year I totally feel for this poor teacher! I know that feeling. I know which student is the instigator of most the mischief that goes on in my class, even if I have no proof! I know that feeling of screaming "He's guilty!" and having everyone else stare at you like you have lost your mind because you have nothing else to back it up other than intuition.
So next time you watch this classic movie don't laugh at the poor teacher. He is under paid, under appreciated, and just trying to manage his class the best way he knows how, while the little turd gets away with it!
So here is to the little turd. May you learn some sort of lesson in my class other than how to lie your way out of trouble. May your eyes be opened to how the real world works. In it you can't have your mom write you a note on why your presentation for the boss is not done, or have a suddenly illness that magically disappears for field trips. Here is to you and that fact that if you're not careful you will have no friends because no one likes a liar. No one likes a gossiper. No one likes a snitch. And yes I know the truth that lies behind those innocent looking eyes. I saw the note being passed and eyes that wander during the geography lesson. So don't blame me when one day you are lost in the middle of Kansas and can't read a map! Don't blame the teacher when you can't pass your driving test because you didn't follow directions. No, no, little turd thats all on you! I hope from the bottom of my heart you snap out of this "phase" you're in and become a very successful person in life. One who listens to others, opens up doors like a gentleman, and does what he thinks is right and not necessarily what is popular. Here is to you beating the odds.

Chocolate and Math
I am a brilliant teacher! Ok well maybe not everyday but I do have my shining moments and today was one of them!
My students are currently learning about fractions, a concept that is actually kind of difficult for some children. I mean think about it... its a part of a whole OR a part of a group and the denominator means the number that make up the whole or the total group AND dictates how big each piece is. Then you have equivalent fractions and mixed numbers and then there is the oh so confusing adding and subtracting unlike denominators.
To help clear up some of the confusion I brought some Hershey bars to school and we made fractions!! It was a blast! After a few minutes of breaking the chocolate bar into halves, fourths, and twelfths everything finally just started to click! I swear I could see the light bulbs turn on. Math today was a complete success! I just hope that it will carry over to tomorrow when we try fractions with out the sugar.
This quote just sums up how great math was today!...
"Miss Wells I think we should use chocolate with math everyday. The smell of chocolate just helps me think!"
I totally agree. Everything is better with chocolate!

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...
Day 983 of my captivity...
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.
Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

2008 in a Nutshell!
Looking back on 2008...it was a good year!! Actually it was a GREAT year. Here are just some of the highlights
1. I GRADUATED FROM BYU!!!! No more finals, term papers, or stupid classes to take...Welcome to the Real World.
2. I started teaching (officially)!
3. 2008 was the year of trips....Caribbean cruise with Alicia, Disneyland, LA, San Francisco, Reno, and San Diego with Carla, Outer Banks with my family and I even spend Jan. 1st in Canada.
4. I SAW WICKED AND IT WAS FREAKING WICKED AWESOME!!!!! It 'defied gravity' and taught me to 'dance through life'. I totally get why it is so 'popular'!!!
5. I got to swim with sting rays and snorkel out to the drop off point. I even got a Neapolitan ice cream tan....(sun burnt, tan, and white all on my back!)
6. My Jetta! It is the love of my life. Every time drive her she makes me smile! I It's seat warmers work wonders on me in the cold early morning hours driving to school. Why does Utah have to be soo cold??
7. I got bangs. Now this might not sound all that important to you but I love them. I guess its a girl thing.
8. All my wonderful road trips. There is nothing better than pulling over on the highway to take crazy pictures next to the "Welcome to ________" signs. Then there is always the inevitable getting lost(sometimes just in downtown Hollywood and sometimes it meant a 2 hour drive around Lake Tahoe, which I still don't understand how we did that Carla!)
9. I watched history happen....Obama became our 1st Black President and Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals.
10. Bella turned into a vampire which was awesome even though the rest of the book sucked or was just plain weird!
11. I officially became a Utah Resident...still don't know how I feel about it.
12. Baby Josh was born and he is the cutest little cousin ever!!! Darci you are going to have to beat the girls to keep them off of him.
13. Adorable Baby Lacey graced the world...can't wait to meet this summer!! Congrats Nicole and Ross.
14. SOOOOO MANY MORE!!!
This year I got to experience so many wonderful things, keep in touch with old friends, and make new ones! This year has definitely had its ups and downs but I have enjoyed every minute. I hope 2009 will be just as wonderful for both you and me.
PS-If anyone wants to go on a trip just let me know I'll have my bags packed in 20 mins and then WE'RE OFF (as long I can find a sub or its over a weekend or summer vacation)!!
