May
What happened in May?
I ran a 5k, which you can read about on my weight loss blog. My baby turned 2. We celebrated with a grand party this year to make up for the lack of party last year. Asher's Birthday Celebration an ABC party. I planned to have a spring baby so that we could have birthday parties outside (among other things), so of course the night of his party we were hit with possible tornado producing thunderstorms. The large party was moved inside our little home, but was still a success.
April
What happened in April?
I turned one year older. We celebrated Easter with the typical egg dying, Easter egg hunts and the visit from the Easter bunny. Surprisingly, Madelynn remembered Kimmy dressing up as the Easter bunny last year when we were in Colorado for the holiday. Asher started potty training on his own by requesting to sit on the potty to poop.

March
What did we do in March?
We moved out of my parents house! Not that we can afford it financially, but we couldn't afford not to for other reasons, namely the sanity of my husband and therefore the wholeness of our marriage.
Apartment hunting was like an episode of House Hunters. Three great places which one will they choose. The cheap apartment close to family, the new build close to work, or the old house with a yard. We quickly nixed the cheap apartment close to family because they were GHETTO. Then it came down to a new apartment with granite counter tops and a laundry room, or an old house without air conditioning or a dishwasher but a large yard. Chad had a hard time understanding why I chose the house when the apartment had everything on my wishlist. It comes down to the yard. The apartment was literally in the middle of the road, as in the road splits into two one way streets and the building is in the middle. I prefer the yard and neighborhood much more. We bought a portable dishwasher and we had window ac units to manage the summer. It's only 3 months anyways, right? (as my fingers stick to the keys with sweat).
So now we live in a quaint 1946 cottage in the old part of Elkridge, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, attic, basement, sunroom, porch, deck, and fenced yard. Renting in Maryland has proved to be a very different experience than renting in Utah. We mow our own lawn and the landlord didn't provide a lawnmower. Luckily our neighbor is handy Andy and let's us use his old lawnmowers.

Banana 'M'
That's what Madelynn calls out when she sees the golden arches as we drive by. We did a lot of driving today.

Cutting in Line
The local fabric store on Saturday is a lot like the DMV on most days, filled with number calling and long waits, but without chairs. This was my second time braving the store on such a day. With the knowledge of my previous experience, I grabbed a number before I even picked out my fabric. Luckily for me someone had bailed out early and left their number on the counter, 55 (they were currently calling in the late 20s). Otherwise my number would have been in the late 60s. After much debate over which fabric to purchase, and a short chat with a friend I bumped into, I picked out my fabric and returned to the number machine. Secretly, I was hoping for another bailout number, but what I found was much more rewarding.
He looked so out of place, like a scruffy puppy in among cougars. His daughter was either on the way to the land of nod, or just coming back. I felt a call to action as if I had just watched a Sara Mclachlan ad.
However, I didn't know what to do. Since he was at the cutting area before me, I assumed his number was ahead of mine. We were in the early 40s by now. I thought about offering to get a cart for his girl to lay in, but soon realized I wouldn't be able to get a cart without leaving the store and I didn't want to loose my fabric bolts. Finally, I spoke up,"What's your number?" The lamest pick-up line out of context. Surprised to see someone talking to him he looked down at the paper tag her was clutching, "Uh, 75" We exchanged sympathetic looks. Then I offered him some words of encouragement, "Well, you're in the right place sometimes people leave numbers when they've had enough of waiting in line." He was grateful for the pro tip and then we chatted about his cute little girl to pass the time.
In the half hour or so that I stood there two people mistook me for an employee, but no one dropped off low numbers. By this time, I wanted a new number more for the dad than for myself. My kids were at home having fun with their dad, I could wait there all day if I really had to. My mommy senses were tingling and telling me that his little girl didn't have much quiet left. That's when I got the idea to be her mommy too.
Now, I was the one holding the low number. I offered to cut his fabric with mine when my number was called. I'm sure we were both giggling a little inside when the older ladies cutting fabric started making small talk about "our" cute little girl (who happened to start fussing at that moment, a mom knows what she knows). He was very grateful for my kindness. I was really very happy to help.
I had positioned myself in the cutting area to my greatest advantage, with the best view of the number dispenser. I was hoping to get a lower number and get myself out of there fast. What I got instead was an opportunity to serve my neighbor and experience the great feeling that comes along with doing what is right. A feeling that has lasted me longer than finding a lower number.

My Christmas Angel and Elmo
When I started researching what kind of toys my children would enjoy this year, I feel in love with the Let's Rock Elmo. Both of my children really enjoy singing and dancing and who doesn't love Elmo. This item was marketed perfectly for their ages.
Unfortunately, the Elmo costs 59.99 at most stores, even on Black Friday. The lowest price I had seen was a pre-Black Friday sale at around $45. I loved the toy, but not $60 worth. I gave up on the idea until one late evening browsing Facebook I saw a post on The Krazy Coupon Lady that claimed I could get the toy for around $12 at Target. I woke up real early Saturday morning to get to the store before anyone else stole my deal. I practically ran to the toy section, only to find all the Let's Rock Elmo's had sold out yesterday.
Dejected I went home and told my husband. He volunteered to go to another Target in the area to see if they had the toy. I went to work not knowing if he succeeded. When I came home he gave me the good news. I was elated for the second time and all over a silly toy, I know.
Only two days after Christmas Madelynn came running up the stairs cradling the Elmo. "Mommy, Elmo not working. He went errrrrrr and now he not sing." Ok, no problem, I thought I would just change the batteries and he would be as good as new. Nope. Ok, maybe these batteries aren't working I will go buy new batteries and for sure they will work. Nope. My Elmo dreams were crushed.
I called Hasbro, only got a busy signal. I continued to call until someone picked up. My Christmas angel. She was very pleasant over the phone and informed me that Hasbro would send a working Elmo to us, I only had to send the broken one back. I knew she was busy, but she did not treat me like another mother worried about a silly toy. I was elated for the third time over this Elmo.
I wasn't sure how long the process would take. I gave it 10 business days before I emailed my Christmas angel. She responded quickly and was again very polite and to the point informing me that Hasbro is really busy at this time and I should expect to wait 4-6 weeks. Bummer.
Later that day I received another email from my Christmas angel. Apparently, after our initial email correspondence she found out that our Elmo had just been processed and a new one should be arriving in 10 business days. Happy again about the Elmo for the 4th time. Instead of leaving me the 4-6 weeks, she wrote to tell me of the update. I know it's a silly Elmo, but it really meant a lot to me. I wrote her manager to tell her I was very impressed with the service I received. I hope it helped.
I can't wait for his arrival. Yes, I'm more excited than my kids.
