1st Corp Warriors & Archers, FireForge Knights
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in miniatures, painting on December 8, 2025
More units for Saga Age of Chivalry. I’ve like the look of the 1st Corp (King Maker) figures for a long time and was able to pick them up from Scale Creep in the US. The knights are the best kind of figures – free! Sort of, they’ve been sitting on my shelf for years waiting for a project. They are more 12500 than 1350, but I can add them into my Crusader army when I’m done with Saga.
Paint plan
The knights are done in a simple red and white (Khaki Highlight with a highlight of Dark Ivory).
The warriors and archers are more less the same plan as my Saxon/Vikings with the addition of a few new paints from Pro Acryl: Payne’s Grey, Dark Ivory, Red Grey and Caramel Brown.
1st Corp Dismounted Knights
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in miniatures, painting on December 2, 2025
I have Saga in my future. This unit of 1st Corp dismounted knights will be used as mercenary Foreign Men at Arms in an Age of Chivalry force. More units to follow soon.
All of the armour plates are undercoated with Pro Acryl Pain’s Grey (which is actually a dark blue). This approach is producing a very shiny armour that stands distinct from the mail.
Paint Plan
- Dark Brown spray primer
- Plates – Payne’s Grey, Oily Steel, Chainmail highlight
- Mail – Oily Steel, Armor Wash
- Accents – Ancient Bronze, Dark Sepia wash
- Leather – Rudy Brown/Flat Earth
- Wood Handles – Desert Stone, then Flat Earth
Ragnarok Vikings & Leaders
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in miniatures, painting on November 1, 2025
More figures from the Ragnarok kickstarter, with a few leader figures from the Einherjar set and a couple of minis from Saxon Miniatures (also Patton sculpts).
Banners are printed from files posted by Microbunker. Paper banners attached with white glue to heavy weight paper. The combined flag is folded over and attached to the pole with superglue (and the triangle tips), with more white glue holding the body together. Any exposed paper was painted green or black to blend in with the flag.
Saxon Cavalry Units

Saxon Cavalry from Black Tree Design. I did not have high hopes for these figures. The sculpting of the riders is basic & dated and the mounts are gigantic. But they were cheap!
One unit of medium cavalry and one unit of skirmishers/scouts. These units will be joining the Midgard force with the rest of the Saxons.
Viking Archers
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in miniatures, painting on September 3, 2025
12 Viking Archers from the Gripping Beast Saga product line. These are arranged in two units of six as skirmishers for Midgard.
Gripping Beast has a lot of variety in their figure sizes. These are tall and thick, and compare well with the Ragnarok figures.
Footsore and Medbury Vikings
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in miniatures, painting on August 7, 2025
This should be the last of the Footsore and Medbury units – aside from a pack or two left in the lead pile. As with the rest of the units, they are based for Midgard on basswood trays. The skirmish unit gets a fancy tray with rock detail. The cavalry unit has a carefully arranged tray with details in-between the figures. I found one more character figure at the bottom of the kickstarter box – think it may have been bonus figure. The four Huscarls will be incorporated into other units – I have some rearranging to do with completed units.
Viking Paint Walk Through
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in painting on July 2, 2025
A walkthrough on how I paint my Vikings. I think of myself as a unit painter and always keep the three foot rule in mind. If your not familiar – the 3 foot rule states that figures will be viewed from a table distance of 3 feet which hides a variety of painting sins. Figures are by Footsore – 4 berserkers, 2 command from Thor’s Hammer, 1 Halls of Valhalla, and 1 Viking Shaman. Steps are listed in order of operation. If you see paint + paint, it indicates a mix of the two. Most paints are Reaper brand, with exceptions listed with the color.
Spray paint with Warm Carmel, touch up any bare spots with Stynylrez Red Brown brush on primer.
Color block the major spaces on the figure. Metals undercoated with Reaper Walnut Brown (any black/brown will do). Skin coated with Scale Color Basic Flesh – those figures with bare chests have small amounts of the brown undercoat left as a shade. Axe Handles painted with Secret Weapon Dark Wood (a dark grey). Pelts painted in either Nut Brown (a medium dark brown with poor coverage – acts more like a wash than a paint) with Saddle Brown dry brush, or Reaper Stone Grey (medium dark grey) with Wolf Grey dry brush.
Some times the colors just come together based on what’s on my pallet. I put down Ancient Bark (light grey) and used it for some of the pelts. This is a bright, near white grey – really too much. I had more Dark Wood ready for a missed axe handle. Add some water, and Dark Wood becomes a wash to go over the Ancient Bark pelts.
Pants and cloaks. This list seems like something long and complicated. Trust me, the process is anything but thought out. Each of the models has 2 or 3 major cloth areas. I want to rotate colors through those pieces. A few red, a few blue, a few green. Boundary colors are usually a neutral grey, buff, or brown. I want the major colors to pop, but not clash with the resto of the figure. Everything either gets a highlight or a wash.
Bear Berserker: pants – Foundry Terracotta Shade, Terracotta, Terracotta Light
Two Axe Berserker: pants – Gem Purple + Ebony Flesh, Gem Purple, Gem Purple + Yellowed Bone
Long Axe Berserker: pants – Khaki Shadow, Stained Olive
Shaman: Tunic – P3 Battle Dress Green, Foundry Raw Linen, Raw Linen Light. Head piece: Garnet Red, Garnet Red + Khaki Highlight.
Shield Berserker: pants – Winter Blue, Glacial Mist
Command w/ Horn: pants – Winter Blue, Glacial Mist. pants: Ebony Flesh, Ebony Flesh + Ghoul Skin
Command w/ Axe: cloak – Foundry Chestnut Shade, Chestnut, Chestnut Light. Tunic – Turf Green, MiddleStone
Valhalla: cloak – Vallejo Ger. Red Brown, Garnet Red, Garnet Red + Khaki Highlight
Metals – Mithril Silver?? Name has worn off of the bottle.
Hair: Redstone Highlight & Ruddy Brown for the red heads. Heartwood Brown for blond. Saddle Brown for brunette.
Skin: Army Painter Soft Tone, Beige Red highlights
Belts, Pouches, Scabbards: any one of the three – Ruddy Brown, Vallejo Leather Brown, Pro Acryl Advanced Flesh Tone. With Pro Acryl Brown Wash
Shields: The key with shields is to have a dark boundary between the colors. If the base (shade) color will not do it, then a line is painted in with dark brownish/black.
- Prussian Blue, Templar Blue Walnut Brown, Wolf Grey
- Prussian Blue, Winter Blue Khaki Shadow, Khaki Shadow + Khaki Highlight
- Stained Olive, Vallejo Brown Violet Heartwood Brown, NMM Gold Base
- Garnet Red, Rach Red Walnut Brown, Walnut Brown + Wolf Grey
Shield Rim – Secret Weapon Handle Wood
All metal – Secret Weapon Armor Wash
Bases: Liquitex craft art paint is used for the bases.
- Rim – Raw Umber
- Use Raw Umber as the glue to fix rough sand mix.
- Wash sand with Raw Umber + floor wax.
- Dry Brush Raw Sienna.
- Pick out stones with Secret Weapon Handle Wood.
- Apply static grass (Farm Pasture Blend) with white glue.
- Possibly add grass or flower tufts.
Footsore Viking Archers, Command and Berserkers

Footsore archer unit. New movement tray with thin detail on the edges. Easier to place the bases, but its a little short on decoration.
Viking Berserkers. I like these nutters, particularly the one in the bear skin with the puffy pants. These figures really take advantage of the movement in these sculpts.

Victrix Normans
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in miniatures, painting on June 17, 2025
This group of Victrix models was a bit of an experiment. Figures were spray primed with a very dark brown, non-armor pieces were dry brushed with taupe. Its an old practice that has become popular again. But, I found it more difficult to work with than my standard caramel brown. Little bits of white would show at the joints, or the white would show through a base layer.
Banner is LBMS. The decal is attached to heavy weight craft paper, then folded and glued. An X-Acto tool was placed under the flag while it dried to create a bend/motion in the banner.
I made a change to the character base. I’ve had lots of trouble trying to get 3 figures to stand up correctly. The cause was the depth of the sand on the base. Solution was to trace out 3 circles and keep the basing material outside of the circles.
Norman Warriors
Command group with flag by LBMS.
A few extra Saxon/Norman figures.
Reaper Fire Giants

Reaper Fire Giants! You don’t expect all those Vikings to be marching to war all by themselves.
Midgard makes it easy to combine the fantastical with the historical.
