I love our neighborhood. Our friends are always up for a good time. My friend Suzann and I both talked about doing an activity with our families to celebrate the Olympics. We figured the more the merrier, so we invited everyone who wanted to come!
We had sooooo many ideas, but we decided to keep it to 10 challenges. We also thought of getting volunteers to run each event, but really, people like easy. We also wanted to encourage the kids to do all the challenges, so we made a list of each challenge/event and put it on a pendant to wear like a medal. We made signs to explain each challenge and put a sheet of stickers at the challenge so you could collect a sticker right when you were done. Like I said, there were sooo many ideas, but we limited ourselves and made it easy on us too!
I have to say, when I was little, we had a family reunion where we got to do family olympics. I remember having a card that we put stars on after finishing each event and the main event I remember was walking on #10 cans with strings attached to make them into stilts. (maybe that is in an old family video on vhs, is that why I remember it?) I loved the idea apparently, because although we didn't have stilts, I did use the star and list idea!
Here are the event cards: (hopefully you can read it)
Ping Pong Challenge:
Cute boys proud of their progress so far:
Paper Discus Throw and Sock Shot Put:
Speed Basketball:
Gymnastics Relay:
We put the instructions in page protectors and then taped skewers to the outside to stick them in the ground. Genius! :)
Look! I was there! I think I just dropped the hoola hoop. Sweet Raquel was racing me :) and nate was getting ready for his turn.
Slip and Slide Race:
Olympic Themed Treats! We said to bring an olympic treat to share and we got some fun ones!!
Nerf Gun Shooting:
the target was a paper plate colored to look like a target, simple and PERFECT.
Sponge Volleyball:
It was later used more as a swimming pool, but that was just perfect too!
Wrestling: oh wait! that wasn't on the card!
Everyone had SO MUCH fun. Like I said earlier, we tried not to do things that took a lot of organizing or help from parents (aside from little kids needing help) but I know who to call next time when I need someone to round the kids up and get them excited for something!
Graham was super nice to help the kids do a relay race! We saw some commotion in the grass area and suddenly everyone was lined up, parents assigned to help each line and we had some fun foot races!
I need to get more pictures of the parents next time! I'm already scheming up another fun event because I can't wait for the end of summer!
