Call me Santa!

Have a Merry Christmas…or else!!

In 1988, the crime rate in the United States rises four hundred percent. The once great city of New York becomes the one maximum security prison for the entire country. A fifty-foot containment wall is erected along the New Jersey shoreline, across the Harlem River, and down along the Brooklyn shoreline. It completely surrounds Manhattan Island. All bridges and waterways are mined. The United States Police Force, like an army, is encamped around the island. Santa has the Naughty List ready, and he’s going in.

A Bitter Harvest: Fred Reed’s Old School Howling Griffons Space Marines Army

Image
Fred Reed’s Howling Griffon Space Marines on the back cover of White Dwarf 176

Everyone of a certain vintage knows of this legendary army. The iconic full army shot from the back cover of White Dwarf 179 is the stuff of legend. An (at that time) obscure chapter in a quartered (!) scheme featuring 2 of the (at that time with the paints as they were then) hardest to paint colours, across a full company of space marines…it was mind blowing.

More thoughts on Warhammer: The Old World and an introduction to my High Elves project

Image
The main infantry core of the army including Shadow Warriors, White Lions, Swordmasters, and spearmen and archers. Now to get them all painted…!

I played another game of Warhammer: The Old world last week, this time a 4 player game run a 2 vs 2 with me and my regular gaming buddy (High Elves and Wood Elves) taking on two opponents who were running Vampire Counts and Chaos Warriors.  We each took 1,500 points (so 3,000 per side) and ran a simple pitched battle. It was good fun and 3,000 points per side made for a good game, though with those points restricted to 1,500 per player it meant that there weren’t any truly overpowered characters or units on the table.

Thoughts on Warhammer: The Old World

Warhammer Fantasy was always my first love, I’m not even sure how I got so sidetracked with 40K to be honest… The first wargaming figures I bought and painted were lizardmen in the 1990s 5th edition Fantasy era. So, like many, I was pleased to see “The World That Was” back again. I finally had a chance to play a game, and my regular opponent (who already has a few games under his belt) ran me through the rules last night.

Eldar vs Space Marines, 2nd ed 40K battle (new rules re combat resolution)

Image

Last night my Alaitoc Warp Hunters took on Jason’s Dark Angels in a bloody battle. I remembered to take a few photos this time and I wrote up a brief report of the battle (but this is not a comprehensive battle report). We also used our own house rules for combat resolution for the first time.

Churchill NA75 (and Mark IV) (Warlord Games kit) and musings on 2024

Image

Happy New Year, friends! I painted a Churchill Second World War infantry tank for Tom Egan‘s Festive Tank Challenge over 21 – 31 December 2023. Did it come out perfectly?…No, but it looks good I think and it’s done, which is perfect in its own way!
