Finally, the final piece to complete my studio. Flashy, reflective armor plate behind my woodstove! Thanks to my ‘handyman’ for cutting and installation. It has really brightened up that corner and inspired me to get back to creating! It was a serious eyesore before with the grey cement board which bothered me for years!! Phew, it is done, the fire is heating up the studio and I can get a handle on things.

Good news! I have a new ‘proper’ website up and running. Search for BunnySafariPottery.com and see what I have been up to. Fresh new work will be coming in the next couple of months.

Yes, dear readers, a photo of me doing some work! I have been busily creating lots and lots of neighbourhood mugs for some of favourite  neighbours in the City of Guelph. Currently I have The Ward, Exhibition Park, old St. George’s covered. I am working on some of the other older ‘hoods too. Officially, we have now entered ‘the mad season’ of getting prepared for that date at the end of December that all the big shops start promoting ad nauseam!!!

I have also decided to have another online retail location over at http://www.bunnysafaripottery.com to help the Canadian collectors of my work. Why? The US dollar is so expensive that I feel the pain of trying to buy something from the US (for me that would be purchasing film…..). This way, all my prices are in Canadian $$ for items in the shop.

Stay tuned for some more fun photos and I will get back to making more pots!!

100 Strangers Project #98 Brian

Getting so close to finishing this project with the help of local vendor, Brian! He has a great look and his portrait is brilliant!! So turns out, Brian owns the local sugar shop in Guelph called Sweet, right across from the splash pad and city hall. Brian and his wife also run a great stall at the antique market too. Turns out that Brian and I have many mutual friends, but this was the first time we both actually said “Hello, my name is…..”. Now I will be able to say “Hello Brian!” when my boychik drags me into Sweet (mind you, I do enjoy the odd Curly-Wurly every now and then).

100 Strangers Project #97 Joanne

Shopping with a gaggle of children is not really shopping. One way to calm the savage beasts was with food, more specifically french fries! Having deposited the raving lunatics far away from the food line, I joined a rather long queue of other hungry people. While in this queue, I noticed disgruntled patrons complaining about cold food, wrong change, long waits, etc. Such first world problems…sigh…how do we manage? Also waiting was this lovely woman named Joanne, also hoping that her order of fries would arrive hot from the cooker. We struck up a delightful conversation! It was really great meeting Joanne, and she is quite an amazing woman who has had some great worldly experiences. One cool bit of information she shared with me was that she and her husband own two yellow corvettes, one of the1972 vintage and the other 2013. Thanks Joanne! Maybe I will see you again at Aberfoyle.

100 Strangers Project #96 Luke

After I photographed Hugo, I glanced to my left and there was Hugo’s friend, Luke, who also had a great look about him. I told him about the project and there was no hesitation from him to participate. Luke and Hugo are best friends and both live in Oakville. Luke has just finished his program at George Brown in carpentry and renovations. I wished him well in his career. I think he has a great future ahead of him! Cheers Luke!!

I spied Hugo and his great jacket while on the look-out for strangers to photograph. I hope Hugo wasn’t too annoyed by my intruding on his search through the bric-a-brac. I thought he had a great overall look. I’m sorry the light was so harsh on his eyes, it was just after high noon for the sun. Hugo had come all the way from Oakville with his friend Luke. Realizing that my 100 Strangers Project had stalled, I decided on a final push to finish. The opening day of the Aberfoyle Antique Market presented the perfect venue to finish. Right off the bat, in the first line of vendors I spotted the letter ‘B’. This rogue of a character, Erin was trying his best to spell out the rest of my name with the letters he had, but we only managed a Bu and that was it. I liked the font and decided that $2 was a fair price for such a great looking letter. Erin is from Dundas and his business is Signs; advertising, antiques and collectables.

100 Strangers #90 Rob O’Flanagan

If you have been following my 100 Strangers journey, you may have noticed that I have a tendency to brag about what a great community I live in. Here is another example of why I know this is true. I was recently awarded an arts bursary for me to pursue some early photographic techniques down in Rochester (I am so excited!). Fortunately, the local paper thought this was an important award and sent one of their journalists to hear the who, what, where and why….and to take my photo (gulp). The man for the job was Rob O’Flanagan. He came armed with his digital and I was at the ready with my trusty YashicaMat. Since my project is about combining clay and photography, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to get Rob to be in this current project. In addition to being a busy journalist, he is a painter sharing space with a local woman that I have known for many years in town. Rob has taken up wood working as well. It turns out that we know many of the same people in Guelph. I may have encouraged him to get back into film photography too………The photo that Rob took of me in my studio ended up being on the front cover of The Guelph Mercury. That was awesome and totally unexpected! I hope Rob likes his grainy film portrait!

100 Strangers Project #73 Shane Philips

While strolling around my local downtown, i fancied a lovely latte at the coffee shop Planet Bean. It just so happens that Planet Bean was selling my mugs and the mugs of two other local potters. I thought I might catch a photo of the promo poster outside. Sitting quite close to the window was this lovely photogenic man. I strode forward and asked him if he wouldn’t mind if I took his portrait for the 100 Strangers Project. He said he was fine with it as long as I didn’t spell his name incorrectly. You can’t see the t-shirt that he had on under his jacket, but it had his name promoting his music. Apparently, the t-shirt company misspelt his name by adding an extra l to Phillips. So he ended up with some free t-shirts. I asked Shane his style of music and described it as having social policital lyrics. He was soon to leave for a three week tour across the US, one of the highlights for him being playing the San Francisco Folk Festival. I was very impressed. I checked out some his music on the u-tube and his voice is just amazing! For fun, I asked Shane to guess which of the mugs from the poster was mine. He laughed and said that he would have to use his special ‘pyschic’ powers…he guessed the right one! Shane was a super nice guy and really has a lovely voice. 100 Strangers Project #72 Claudio

For the past couple of years I have started to photograph my son getting his haircut at the same local barbershop. I take the same model of camera and the guys are always happy to have me shoot away while they work. I think they are impressed that the old Yash-Mat still works and that I can take some decent photos with it. As a thank you, I always make a nice wet darkroom print for each of my subjects.
Over the years we never had a haircut from Claudio. It was the end of the day and he said he would get to us if we didn’t mind waiting. My son was adament that he get the TinTin cut that day and that we weren’t to leave until it was done. Claudio’s dad started this barbershop a loonnnngggg time ago.
Claudio has been a barber for 17 years learning the craft from his Dad. I asked Claudio what his favourite thing about his profession was and he replied that meeting the people made it all worth it. Like me, we realize that everybody has a story or something interesting to say and we like to listen. He did a swell job on my kid’s request and was very patient while I snapped away.
