Cork runners who have completed 250 or more 5k parkruns - Q4 2025

Image

The parkrun organisation have a number of milestones going from 25 to 500 parkruns. The thing about milestones is that they are open to everyone and anyone can aspire to reach a certain level.

A number of people have recently passed the 250 mark and it's a significant achievement as it takes at least five years to complete. Thanks to all those who sent on updates and corrections.

Cork 250 Rules... As with any list, there must be some sort of guideline or rules. The criteria I went with are simple...

  1. At least 100 of the 5k parkruns must be in Co Cork
  2. Only the information on the parkrun website counts
I'm sure there are plenty of people in Dublin and elsewhere who are over 250 but this post is about the parkruns in Cork.

***

Cork runners who have completed 250 or more 5k parkruns Club - Q4 2025... Since the end of 2025, the number of people in Cork who have completed 250 or more 5k parkruns has gone from 39 to 62 in the space of a year.

Image

The top 3 are from Bere Island and it looks likely that Joanne Sullivan will be the first person in Cork to reach the 500 milestone and that's likely to be in the autumn of 2026.

Macroom is the oldest parkrun in Co Cork and it's well represented in the list above.

The second half of the list from 250 to 338 is shown below...

Image

With 20 more people joining the list in 2025, it's starting to get longer and longer. It will probably reach a stage where trying to keep track of everyone becomes too unwieldy.

Volunteers... Needless to say, it's the army of parkrun volunteers that keep the show on the road and the 'super volunteers' have 250 or more credits.

Image

This has gone from 11 at the end of 2024 to 17 at the end of 2025. With the dual volunteer credits from both the 5k parkrun and the junior 2k parkrun, Maretta Brennan is on track to reach the 500 volunteer milestone sometime in the spring of 2026.

This list is very much the tip of the iceberg in terms of the number of volunteers who help out on Saturday mornings to make sure the parkruns can go ahead.

Errors & Omissions... If you know of any runner of volunteer from Cork missing who might at 250 or more, leave a comment with their name and parkrun number.

Results of the 5k parkruns in Cork - Thurs 25th Dec 2025

Image

There were four 5k parkruns in Co Cork on Christmas Day and it's safe to say that it has become a tradition for many people. Just as some people head to the coast to do a Christmas swim, there's a large number of runners who start off their day with a 5k parkrun.

Ballincollig - There were huge numbers out for the Christmas Day parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park with 520 participants crossing the finish line, up from 473 last year. Just out of interest, 520 is the 8th largest number for Ballincollig.

Fair play to the 33 volunteers for making the event a success, it's not easy dealing with that volume of people in a relatively small space.

Tiarnan O'Donoghue and Grellan McGrath reached the century mark! Caroline O'Sullivan and Jeremiah Murphy completed their 250th parkrun!

Grellan has also cycled to all of the 5k parkruns in Co Cork.

Guest Post: A Kinda of Christmas Post ...by Pat Walsh

Image
 * A Kinda of Christmas Post *

Hello to all who visit my page and may you have a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas.

‘Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you had fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young’… Lennon.

It is indeed a time to be grateful for the privilege of being able to run. Not everyone is so lucky and when we are injured, we get a glimpse of what it would be like to be denied a head-clearing social run. Not the greatest start to a year personally, so to finish and I’m running is a bonus. Jaysus I nearly went mental, well more mental than normal as some wouldn’t notice the difference.

I have long since given up that competitive edge and quite content now to just be out there. It is a balance between keeping yourself going and not doing too much or chasing the watch too hard. Never take your eye off of your birth certificate. Lesson for the year, do your strength work. Thanks Santa for a few dumbbells.

It is a time to be thankful to those who work to facilitate our running. Race organisers, our own friends who organise training runs, the photographers who turn up to capture the best and worst of us. Also be thankful for everyone who shared the road with you whether in training or a race. We are a Community of our own and it is important to be respectful to all who run, regardless of pace.

Thanks to everyone who made contact when I couldn’t run. That was important to me. It does help.

Next week or two don’t be too hard on yourself. Get out when you can for a run but go easy and not too far. That way it is possible to get out a few times and knock off the previous day’s excesses while creating room for more.

Hard to do a long run on a bellyful of chocolate and a few glasses of alcohol.

Walking in the fresh air is Ok. Just get out when you can.

Look back on the highs, ignore and forget the lows and know that you have added another year to your running career. What will next Year bring?

AI is supposed to be the answer to the future of humanity doing tasks that were previously manually done. It will never replace one foot in front of the other…!

I have no idea what is ahead, and we can discuss that in a future post.

‘I'm not singing for the future,
I'm not dreaming of the past,
I'm not talking of the first times,
I never think about the last’… Shane

For various reasons it may not be the happiest season of the year for some people due to personal circumstances. We all need to mind and help these people. Be kind to all and be a positive influence on those around you. Message someone who might need a cheer up.

Share kindness and just be nice. I do hope Santa will bring you the fancy Garmin, the re-chargeable headlight, the Nike Zoom Flys and shorts or leggings with go faster stripes on the side of them. If he could give a present of a good set of knees or cures for a bad back they would also be most welcome.

Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. xx

First 3km section of the new South Kerry Greenway is now open to the public - 19th Dec 2025

Image

The South Kerry Greenway has been delayed for ages by legal challenges but the first 3.1km section from Golden's of Kells to the site of the old Kell's railway station is now open.

This is the first section of a planned 32km stretch of greenway going from Glenbeigh to Reenard (south west of Cahersiveen). Once completed, this will be the most scenic greenway in the country.

Image

The main car parking area and a pedestrian access is situated at Golden’s of Kells. This is a temporary arrangement. A permanent car park and accessible access will be constructed at a later date.

The temporary access at Golden's is steep and not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. Toilet facilities will be available for public use at Golden's of Kells.

There are limited accessible parking spaces available at the former Kells Train Station car park as a temporary measure.

The greenway itself is fully surfaced with an easy-to-traverse path with views across Kells Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Section 2 which will run approximately 5 km through woodland from Curra Woods to Mountain Stage has a  planned opening ahead of the 2026 summer season.

New paths at the Atlantic Pond in the Marina Park - Dec 2025

Image

Over the last two years or so, the whole Marina area in Cork City has been redeveloped and the latest section to open last week is around the Atlantic Pond.

This area was really showing its age with areas next to the Pond prone to constant flooding and the paths often had large pools of standing water. There were some sections which were more like a bog with people trying to avoid getting wet.

By contrast, the new paths are nice and wide and there's plenty of options there for runners and walkers.

The lane up to Barrington's Avenue has also reopened which gives access again from the Blackrock Road.

There are some photos up on the Running in Cork Facebook page HERE

It would seem like a nice area for a 5k parkrun? ...or at least a 2k junior parkrun?
