Our tree(s)

We have this gorgeous tree right in our front yard. A neighbor told me we have the tree of which people will stop to take pictures. I sure took some!

Of course, all those leaves are the leaves we have been raking. But we're definitely having fun with them, so I guess it works.

Looking down.

Every time I walked by I would look and marvel at the gorgeous colors. Really. Absolutely beautiful.

If you're going to come visit, come in the fall. And we love having visitors!

Image
I finally got around to making a leaf wreath this year. Ever since seeing one (two, maybe!) on my friend Elizabeth's blog I have wanted to make my own. I would think of it every time I walked past colorful leaves.

I just used a cardboard oval cutout (from a diaper box), hot glue, and leaves. This is actually take two since I didn't do the first one thick enough to account for the drying.

Image
This is what it looks like now. The lighting is not great and the colors definitely aren't what they were, but I still think it's beautiful.

Image
Here is the first attempt. I love the bits of green in this one, but by the time I made the second it was way too late to find any green.

Image
Also walking home from the bus stop. This is one of the side trees with different beautiful color.

I have loved seeing all of the gorgeous color around. On a family bike ride a month or so ago I saw the most beautiful orange leaves. I wish I had stopped for some of those, but it was on quite the uphill. Maybe next year.

Game day (last Saturday) or First Leaf Raking

The weather was beautiful on Saturday. I am afraid it may be our last really beautiful day this year. Unfortunately, Spencer was on call. If he hadn't been I would definitely have been pulling for a bike ride.

The kids went out to start making club houses in the leaves. The boys kept getting upset that the girls were trying to profit from their gathering. Once I had bread kneading (then again while bread was rising) I went out and started on a pile big enough for all. They loved it and ended up spending hours playing out there together.

The first pile.

Look who was hiding inside!

The second – and much bigger – pile.

My view from the front door. You can see all four. Anne was wearing her Rapunzel dress.

I was able to read in the living room for a while with the windows open. The only thing that could have made it even more perfect would have been having Spencer home to enjoy it with us. I really can't complain, though. He is gone on a Saturday so seldom and hasn't been on a Sunday (except for Garrett's wedding). It's wonderful to tell the kids Dad will be home because it's the weekend. For a long time we didn't get real weekends (four, maybe five days off a month). I'm not going to lie, that was hard.

Anyway, life is good. We are definitely enjoying it!

Charlie Brown and my Snoopies

And maybe a Linus or two thrown in there.

It's bigger than it looks. And we still have a whole lot more yard to go.

Spencer keeps looking up leaf blowers and leaving them for me to find á la “A Christmas Story” (or maybe that's the snow/hiking boots he wants), but I keep thinking we need to invest in a few rakes first. It's time to get these little helpers doing a little more helping!

My favorite two-year-old

Image

Anne is in such a great stage right now. Seriously. This little girl is so much fun. She didn't stop running when she said "cheeeese" for the camera.

I'm not sure she ever stops running. And she really has the cutest run.

Accomplished

Image

This picture won't mean much to anyone else, but to me, it represents a fairly major feat.

Two Tuesdays ago our washing machine wasn't working.  And, despite the trouble-shooting in the manual, I couldn't get it going again.

That night I found an "ask the expert" thread with a question just like the one I had. Unfortunately, even after going through all of that (taking off the back panel and dealing with the drain pump and "rubber boot" that is connected to it) it wasn't working. So, we paid to ask our own expert. The result: we needed a new drain pump.

The part was supposed to get here that Saturday, but it came Friday instead! I didn't time it, but with taking off the front panel this time, which meant the top came off first, it took considerably longer than it had Tuesday night, but it wasn't horrible. The best part is getting everything put back together and being able to turn it on with success! Really, I felt awesome. Still do whenever I think about it, actually!

I felt a lot like my dad during this process. I watched him do a lot of stuff like this while I was growing up. I am grateful for his example. It sure feels good to know that what you did fixed a problem!

Overheard

Anne (jumping off the hearth over and over): “Do you want to see another big jump?”

Me: “I would love to!”

After lots and lots of “big jumps,” each preceded by the above question:

Me: “You are full of big jumps!”
Anne: “I am full of pancakes!”

17 October 2013

Overheard

Andy: "When there's a fire you 'Stop, drop, and roll.'"

Me: "Yeah! I learned that when I was in elementary school."
Benny: "You were in elementary school?"

On the menu: “Lunch Drink,” avocado sandwiches, and puréed peas. Yum!

10 October 2013

Overheard

Talking about a friend coming to watch the girls for me:

Me: "Janie's appointment is this afternoon and we will all go to that. I have an appointment just for me this morning."
Lilia: "You're getting PREGnant?!"
Me: "No, Lilia, no I'm not getting pregnant."

*for the record, that was an excited question. The kids have been asking me since (not very long) after Jane was born if I was going to "have another baby in my tummy."

27 September 2013

Overheard

Andy: "Dad, sometimes in the morning my eyes are still closed."

10 September 2013

Overheard

Anne: "I'm a bid tid!"

20 August 2013

Overheard

Andy: "I love Dad so, so, so much. He knocks my socks off."

Overheard

Lilia: "Mom! Everyone in the world -- except the bad guys -- is eating breakfast right now! ... ... I am, too."

14 August 2013

133 days

until Christmas.

Benny just got out of bed and came downstairs to tell me that. He counted on his calendar.

12 August 2013

Overheard

Andy: "Mom, when I grow up and get married, first I'm going to do the first thing you and Dad did then I'm going to do the second thing you and Dad did."

Me: "What's the first thing Dad and I did?"

Andy: "Eat unhealthy food."

Me: "Yeah? And what's the second thing we did?"

Andy: "Eat healthy food."

09 August 2013

Overheard

Anne: "I want dad to feel me better!"

07 August 2013

Overheard

Anne (upon walking back from the bus stop after the boys left): "I need the boyzos!"

They are going to have a great year.

Braid crowns

Growing up my favorite hairdo was a "princess crown" (a French or Dutch braid done around the top of the head). I have wanted to do one for Lilia for a long time! I tried over a year ago when I thought her hair was long enough. Her hair is so fine that it didn't even last until we got to church that day. A couple of Sundays ago I tried it again and it turned out great! She loved it and asked for a repeat the next day.

Image

Image

I liked it so much, this morning I thought I'd try one of my own. I really wondered if it was too youthful a look (I'm now 30!), but I decided to go for it. I got comments all day. I may have to try it again!

Sharing

I love finding things like this:

Jane surrounded by Anne's stuffed animals.

Another favorite: hearing Anne say, "Hi, yittle baby!" every time she sees Jane.

June birthday catch-up: Lilia

Lilia turned four on 15 June. Just one week before loading up the moving truck. She was a good sport with everything and still talks about how we got a new house for her birthday. She must not have been too bummer out. Her birthday was on a Saturday and the same day as the dinner for the "graduating" residents from Spencer's program. Spencer wanted to go since that was the last time he would see most of his colleagues from intern year, so we decided to celebrate earlier in the day. No complaints from Lilia!

She was so excited for her two barbies (Rapunzel and Merida), her "my little pony" from her brothers, and her Snow White dress-up outfit from grandma and grandpa. She wore that for the rest of the day. The best was when I took her into Reasor's to pick her ice cream and she got a LOT of looks, comments, and waves. And, boy, does she know how to ham it up. She was adorable.

We love our Little Lilia. She is bright, friendly, and very loving. It is so great to see her growing into a very good girl.

April 2012 Birthday Catch-up: Spencer

We only got video on the big day, but here is Spencer the day after turning 29.

With my annual strawberry shortcake that Spencer started making for me a few birthdays ago.  Delicious!  29 was a great year.

July 2012 Birthday Catch-up: Benny

The kids and I had just gotten back from a two week trip to Utah and apparently I was all pictured-out.

A little late, but here's the birthday boy!!

A long-desired gift.
Looks like Andy's still enjoying cake.

And a trip to Benny's favorite place in Tulsa: The Air and Space Museum.

Catch-up: April 2012 Church History Trip

I started this post some months ago (still probably about a year late).  I think I'm going to leave it sketchy in order to have it documented.

Last April we took our first family vacation that wasn't to see family.  We didn't originally plan to make it a church history trip, but since moving here [Tulsa] I had said that I would like us to go to Nauvoo because we would be within driving distance.  I didn't want to miss that chance.  What worked out really well is that we also wanted to go to the Kansas City Temple open house!  We were able to combine the two trips into one.  We stayed three nights in each place and had a great time.  The kids loved it.  I am so grateful we were able to take that trip so that we can look back on it.  It may be a little bit before we get our next family vacation, so it's nice to have something the kids remember for now!

Lots of pictures:

In the Independence Visitor's Center.
This was a fun place.  It is right across from the Community of Christ (former RLDS) temple.  We also went there briefly to look at their little history museum (they did not have the map that included the trail the "Brighamites" took to Salt Lake City that I saw when I came with my family some years ago) and their big worship area.

Side Note: We had to run back to the Visitor's Center the next day because I had dropped my work phone there.  A senior missionary called my mom (she's almost always one of my most recent calls on that phone) and she got in touch with me about it.  That was a real blessing to not lose that.  The bad thing is that I didn't even notice it was gone!

Image

This wagon was a favorite.

He's a regular pioneer!

Anne just loved all the chairs!

Image

Can't pass up the opportunity for a family picture with the Christus.

Image

The only picture from the picnic lunch we had at a park not too far from the visitor's center.
While at this park we also saw some firemen doing some training/practice of getting someone up from the bottom of a hill.  It was pretty neat to watch.

Finishing up dinner leftovers (immediately upon getting back to the hotel!).

Ready for bed!

Image

It was really neat to be able to take the kids through the temple and teach them some things.  I am not sure how much they will remember, but we are grateful to have the chance to do that.
We are looking forward to having a chance to take them to the Indianapolis Temple as well!

At the church next to the temple.

After the temple we went straight to Liberty Jail.
The kids have watched the Doctrine and Covenants scripture story DVDs quite a bit and we have talked a lot about some of the church history.  It was really neat to be able to show them where some of those things happened.

This was back during my running days and I ended up going on a five or six mile run that Saturday morning.  It kind-of hard to see, but that's a goose sitting in an elevated container.  I thought that was so funny, but then I found out those are there on purpose for nesting spots away from predators.

Love the goslings.

Elder and Sister Grygla.
Elder Grygla helped us make the rope earlier this day and we chatted with his wife and him after the Saturday show.  It turns out Elder Grygla is retired from LDS Family Services and knows my dad!  Kind-of fun to run into people like that.  My dad has been in the LDSFS system for over 30 years and has met a lot of people in that time.

We were all worn out and ready for home!

This was such a great trip!  We are so glad it worked out.  The funny thing is that after we had it all booked, we found out we'd be living in Indiana - closer to Nauvoo than Tulsa is!  During our time here we would like to go again.  As wonderful as going off-season was (a good deal on lodging and the whole place to ourselves!), I would love the chance to take the kids during the summer when we can do the pioneer games section.  Hopefully that works out.
