I'm finally choosing sides

It seems like everywhere I go there is Twilight mania. I've never read the novels or seen the movies, because I get annoyed when something is too trendy and popular and I protest by refusing to participate. Which is probably why I've never been one of the "cool kids."

Anyway, I keep seeing these "Team Werewolf" and "Team Vampire" things out there, and it's occurred to me that I must be a member of Team Werewolf, because I've apparently married one - Cory is getting hairier and hairier every day, so he must be a werewolf, right? SO...

Go Team Werewolf!

Disclaimer: No mere physical change, be it weight gain, southern migration of hair, or disfigurement, is enough to change how I feel about my husband. But I gotta poke fun.

The Princess and the Frog

Lear quote: "Is what I just said going on the Blog, Mommy?"

Ella quote: "Why did you marry Daddy, Mommy?"
Me: "Because I love Daddy very much."
Ella: "Daddy loves you, too?"
Me: "I certainly hope so."
Ella: "Yeah, he does, because he hugs you a lot. I saw him hug you and hug you today in the kitchen."

One more Lear quote

"Why is the Tooth Fairy the only Fairy that's real, Mommy?"

Also, we told him that if he ever sees the Tooth Fairy, ALL of his teeth will fall out, and that's why she only comes while people are sleeping and no one knows what she looks like. I love this innocent (or gullible, however you want to look at it) stage!

Blah, blah, blaaaaahhh

I'm not very motivated to do much these days, I'll admit. I have a difficult time keeping the clothes clean enough for my family, and we've been eating a lot of quick and easy meals lately. I'm starting to feel more energetic, which means I'm only falling asleep two or three times a day as opposed to five or so. The only time I break out the flute is when I have a rehearsal or a lesson, and I haven't been on the treadmill in a month.

However, we did manage to have a wonderful Thanksgiving (many thanks and hoorays to Bryce and Carolee for hosting us this year) and we have our Christmas decorations up. Lear lost a tooth the day before Thanksgiving, directly under the one that was already gone, and yesterday he had to have another one pulled because it died - something to do with fillings making the tooth think it's dead, I don't quite get it. Because it was a molar, he had to get a spacer put in to keep the space clear for his permanent tooth which won't arrive until he's 9 or 10. So, he's missing three teeth, and we discovered another one is loose. Why couldn't he inherit my mother's hard-as-diamond teeth?

I also went to the doctor for the first time Tuesday. We had an ultrasound, which is unusual for my doctor (midwife, actually). In the past, having an ultrasound was a big to-do, in which I had to make an appointment with the attending doctor and stuff. This time, we just walked down the hall, flipped on the machine, and got going. We saw the little kumquat and it's heartbeat. It's about 3 1/2 cm long right now. I also got the H1N1 maternity shot. I have to admit, I wasn't sold on getting the vaccine, but since I didn't have to wait in line for 8 hours to get it, I though I might as well. I admit, however, that I feel guilty for having gotten it, while my kids haven't. They've had the regular flu shot, but not the H1N1, and even though I'm pregnant, I can't help feeling that it was more important for them to get it rather than me. I also don't like taking part in whatever public panic and/or hysteria is trendy at the moment. Silly me.

Lear quote: "That's nonsense, Daddy!" (Cory had commented that Lear should join the Safety Patrol because he reminded us to buckle up, and Lear thought that was silly, because the Safety Patrol is a cartoon.)

Ella quote: "Why do I have to do everything myself?" (Ella was mad at me for telling her to get her own snack.)

Lear is the biggest sweetheart ever. (Read his quote at the bottom to find out why.)

So, I'm completely uninspired lately. I'm pregnant, sick, and so tired that it's all I can do to keep the house in tolerable order. However, here are some pictures of what's been going on in the Jaynes house recently.

Image
Lear is modeling his pink vampire teeth. I wonder if all those Twilight fans would think Edward is as sexy with hot pink teeth.

Image
Pumpkin carving on Halloween.

Image
Lear and Ella decided that it was Nemo's birthday, so this is a picture of the party they threw for him.

Image
And finally, Ella got into my mascara. The picture doesn't show the true extent of the damage, however.

Lear quote: Dad: "Well, Lear and Ella, did you know that Mommy has another baby in her tummy?"

Lear: "Oooohhhh, is that why you've been looking so fat lately, Mommy?"

Ella quote: Dad: "Did you make a lot of new friends at McDonald's, Ella?"

Ella: "No, Daddy, I found friends, not make friends."

Day trips and stuff

Image
Image
Image
We went for a drive up in the mountains a couple Sundays ago. The pictures above are from our pit stop. Lear is playing King of the Hill, and Ella is standing in front of an amphitheater that's being built outside Sundance.

Image
And Ella's room is finally done, thanks to my sister Gia, who made the curtains. Ella chose the fabrics for the curtains. We started with new sheets and bedspread in June, painted it a couple weeks later, and finally got the curtains. Now we just have to paint Lear's and our rooms. Just another couple items on the endless home improvement list.

Lear quote: Mom: "Lear, why is there a hole in you birthday cake?"
Lear: "A bird did it."
Mom: "Really? Are you telling me the truth?"
Lear: "Yes, I am. It was a magpie. It flew in the house, and pecked a hole in the cake."
Mom: "Yeah, let's stop this story before it becomes even more elaborate."

Ella quote: Ella: "Mommy, I hun-gee."
Mom, with exasperation: "Again? You're always hungry."
Ella: "Yeah, I a hun-gee little girl."

I broke Ella's heart yesterday.

We were driving home from having dinner at Fuddrucker's (my first hamburger in months. I guess I can't have another until December or something.) and we were having a discussion about nieces and nephews, and how all the relatives are related to the kids. We told Ella that when she gets married in at least 20 years (I'm sticking to that rule!) her kids will be our grandkids.

"When I marry Lear, our kids will be your gran-chil-in?" Ella said.

"Sorry Ella, but you can't marry your brother - or your cousins. Maybe you'll marry Kyle or Elijah." I replied. (Kyle is my friend Brei's son, and Elijah is Coryellen's. Both are her friends.)

"Yeah, Ella," Lear chimed in, "you can only marry your friends. I used to want to marry you or mommy, too, until I found that out."

A small whine started in the carseat behind me. It grew in both volume and pitch, before Ella burst into hysterical sobs. Why? Because she can't marry Lear. She cried all the way home.

"Don't worry, Ella. In 20 years, you'll think that marrying your brother is the most disgusting thing ever," I said, trying to comfort her.

For some reason, that didn't help at all.

Saturday at the Jaynes's

Image
Ella discovered a 0-3 months size dress in her closet that she insisted I put on her. I told her it was too small, but apparently I don't know what I'm talking about, because she swore it wasn't. It only lasted about two minutes before she decided that it really was too small after all.

Image
Cory took Lear to McDonald's for a father-son only lunch, so Ella and I had a tea party. I was just going to use water in the tea pot, but Ella said that "you take the wa-ler and put sugar in it and stir it." So, that's what I did. I also added cinnamon for a little flavor. We baked cookies, put on all of the play jewelry in the house, and had some civilized conversation.

Image
When Lear came home, he wanted in on the action, although he refused to wear the jewelry.

Image
Later that day, the boys watched America's Funniest Home Videos on our bed. Lear's legs are up in the picture, but for the longest time they were lying exactly the same way. Cory and his Mini-Me.

Lear quote: "I'm not going to wear the jewelry. It's girl stuff. I'm a BOY."

Ella quote: "Mommy, you not doing da ballet right. You have to spiiiiiinn." Apparently my years of ballet classes don't mean a thing.

Simple kindness

I found a comforter set in an ad yesterday that I really liked, for a good price, so I took the kiddies to Macy's today to go get it. I had to take both kids, which automatically makes my blood pressure rise simply because they can't stop fighting when they're in the car. When we got to Macy's, they went crazy, despite all of my careful yet gentle instructions and threats in the the car about staying next to me and not touching anything. They were crawling under displays, jumping on the beds, and using bed-in-a-bags for landing pads. I found what I was looking for in record time, and went to the register, where the sales lady was helping another woman with something that was apparently long and involved. They watched me struggle with keeping my darlings under control for a couple minutes, and the the woman being helped kindly said that her business can wait, and to go ahead and ring the young lady up. She was so nice! Usually, other people are wondering why I can't control my kids, or why I couldn't just spare everyone the trouble and do all of my shopping online (I considered it). Sometimes they're commenting under their breath to their friends or at best giving me a sympathetic half smile. But this lady actually let me go first and get out of there - and I really appreciated it. It's good to know that not everyone in the world has lost it's grip on kindness.

Lear quote: "Popcorn in the bathtub!" Lear's all-purpose answer to everything.

Ella quote: "I wanna watch Dowa Blowa on yo' teebee, mommy."

Lear the Builder

Image
This is what I mean when I say that this boy will be an engineer. He made this Transformer out of blocks while I was in another part of the house folding laundry. I'm amazed that he figured out how to build this thing on two freestanding legs, and at the symmetry of it all. This kid is amazing!

Creative Use of Underwear

Image
Image

ImageI only work for money two hours a week, at home, teaching flute lessons. This is what happens when my kids have to entertain themselves while I'm teaching. It might not be EVERY piece of underwear that they own (today is laundry day), but it's probably close. Sorry for the sideways pictures.

Lear quote: "I got in trouble in school today because I drew a swimming goggle factory on my assignment."

Ella quote: "My mouth can't do that." (Ella's excuse for not being able to pronounce a word I asked her to say.)

I forgot the video.

Lear's First Day of Kindergarten

Image
Image
ImageI'm actually sad. I'm not looking forward to him coming home and asking me what certain words mean, or why naked women are so interesting, or something else like that. I know he's excited, and that he is more than ready to go out and learn. This boy can already read simple books all by himself, and he knows so many things that I don't remember knowing until I was older. I have to remember that I can't hold him back for my silly personal fears.

Lear quote: "Won't it be fun for you when Ella and I are both in school, Mommy? Then you'll have a break from yelling at us." They never remember the good times....

Ella quote: "I love giving you hugs and kisses, Mommy."

Hooray for $2 Tuesdays!

Image
Image
Image
ImageI took the kids to the Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point today. Most of the stuff there is only $2 on Tuesdays during the summer. I realized that today was the last Tuesday in August, so I booked it down to Lehi to go. (This is also the first Tuesday all summer that I've had a car, since Cory usually had our only car on Tuesdays. We bought a little Chevy Aveo last week, however, since Cory's starting his MBA, and he couldn't get to class on public transportation unless he wanted to be half an hour late every time.) We've been promising the kids, especially Lear, that we'd take them there for weeks. Regular admission is $13 for kids and $15 for adults, so I was happy to wait in line to get in and brave the crowds for once. Usually, crowds and lines are sure to make me change my plans.

Lear quote: "That tyrannosaurus rex painting is frightening!"

Ella quote: "Lear! We goin' to da die-sawr loo-mee-mum!"

Apostrophes

Should I be bugged that a flyer that I got for Lear's school has bad grammar on it? Or am I just being too picky? Is it too much to expect a public school to be able to use apostrophes correctly?

Here's a hint for whoever works at the school that doesn't understand the concept:

An apostrophe indicates a possessive noun or a contraction, not a plural. NOT hard to understand. Therefore, the line should have been "Come meet the teachers," not "Come meet the teacher's." The use of the apostrophe actually equals two grammatical errors, because now the sentence is unfinished. Meet the teacher's what? Pets? Significant other? Toenails? Long lost uncle, twice removed, who had a recent lobotomy?

I know it's probably some office worker who made the flyer, not a teacher, but one would think that someone who cares about how the school represents itself would proofread what they send out. Or maybe the proofreader doesn't understand basic punctuation either.

I'm not saying this to show off my superior knowledge or perfection. I mess up all the time, but I really make an effort to use correct English. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the people who are in charge of educating my children to be able to use and understand these simple concepts.

(Before someone questions my use of an apostrophe in the words "it's" or "don't," I would like to point out that they are contractions. "It's" is a contraction of the words "it" and "is," for example. Possessives and contractions, people-and don't quibble with me about exceptions.)

Lear quote: When Daddy said the word "transformer," I thought he was talking about the toys. It made me think, "What the?!"

I can't think of an Ella quote, but here's another Lear quote:
Mom: What's up, Lear?
Lear: Good.

It's a little late, BUT

Our anniversary was on August 9th, our seventh. Cory planned it all without me, hoping to surprise me. He's not very good a keeping secrets, however, so I kind of knew what was going on. He gave up surprising me a few days before hand. (I love Cory's openness and guilelessness.)

Cory's parents were kind enough to take our kids for the weekend while we went to (fanfare, please!) Sandy! We stayed at a hotel a grand total of six miles away from our home - but it was great. We went to an outdoor Utah Symphony concert in Deer Valley, and spent the rest of the weekend doing the Salt Lake Parade of Homes. We really enjoy snooping through homes we can't possibly afford, and it's great for decorating ideas. Not that I spend a lot of time or effort on decorating, but it's fun to dream.

We did call up Nana to bring the kids to the hotel pool to swim, however. We just couldn't pass up the opportunity to swim with the kids. Lear was totally fearless, but it took Ella a while to get comfortable. She liked the jacuzzi a lot more than the pool. And, I learned that I can float - I never could when I was younger - but I have a lot more buoyancy now, since I weigh about 20 more pounds than back then. Since floating is so relaxing, however, I'll count this as the one upside to getting older and fatter. At least Cory and I are getting older and fatter together.

And on that note: Thank you, Cory, for the best seven years of my life so far - I know it will only get better from here.

Lear quote: "Yeah, I really want to marry Elena someday." Not until you're at least 25, mister!

Ella quote: "I gonna cook dinner to you, Mommy." Play food of course, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Lear quote of the YEAR

Mom: I don't want you to get a water gun, Lear. I don't like guns.

Lear: Don't worry, Mom. It's not a real gun.

Mom: Well, remember - if you ever see a real gun, DO NOT TOUCH IT. Ever.

Lear: Well, I don't think you have to worry, because I think everyone who would ever have a gun lives in Texas.

Where does he get this stuff?!

(Please note that we do not believe that everyone in Texas is a gun-toting trigger-happy hick. I honestly am not sure that Lear even knows where Texas is.)

Odd couple: Sleeping Beauty and the Toothless Wonder

We've been busy in the last few weeks. We had Ella's birthday. We had my parents and oldest brother Barton visiting. We went camping at Great Basin National Park (I highly recommend it) with Nana, Papa, Devin, and Kelly. I couldn't find my camera for most of it, since Lear got a hold of it, took a bunch of fuzzy pictures of Ella in her pajamas, and hid it in his toy bin (he blamed it all on Ella). Here are two pictures that I do have:

Sleeping Beauty

Image
Ella got four, yes four tiaras for her birthday, along with matching play jewelry, a dress-up outfit, and Princess sheets for her bed. She was in princess heaven.

And The Toothless Wonder

ImageLear has had a front tooth that was shorter than the other. I thought that he had ground it down, but the dentist pointed out that if that were the case, both of his front teeth would've been shorter. What actually happened is that sometime Lear fell on his face, and jammed the tooth into his gums. I have no idea when it happened. My guess is that it happened at preschool, and they forgot to tell me. Anyway, when he jammed the tooth in, the root broke. By the time we got an x-ray of it, the root had already reabsorbed into his gums, and all he had left was the crown of the tooth. The dentist said to try to get it out, and if we couldn't do it, we'd have to have it pulled. So, we wiggled it, we pulled on it, and we tried to tie a string around it, but nothing worked. I took Lear back to the dentist so they could give him some laughing gas, numb up his mouth, and pop the tooth out. We probably could've skipped the laughing gas and numbing altogether and simply took some pliers to it ourselves, because it popped out so easily the dentist was surprised. Now, however, since the tooth came out accidently and not naturally, he'll be toothless for a year or so because the permanent tooth is so far up in his mouth. At least it wasn't his permanent tooth that was covertly destroyed.

Lear quote: "Ella's a Farticus!" She was pretty tooty in the car one day, and this is Lear's synopsis, I guess. I wonder if he knows who Sparticus is?

Ella quote: "Danika is my best friend!"

Transformers: More Than Meet the Eye

Lear has been counting down the days until Transformers 2 came out. He has been practically drooling in anticipation. Every time he saw a commercial for it, he would start screaming hysterically, then rewind the tv, and DVR the commercial so he could watch it over and over. Cory and I would find some weird show on the DVR that recorded for about 4 minutes, then find out that all that recorded was a Transformers commercial. (That boy can work a DVR almost better than I can - I think he definitely uses it more.)

So, he's been moderately excited to see it. My brother Bronson was also a raving Transformers fan in his youth, so he promised Lear that they and Cory would see it opening night. Lear was reeeeeaaaaaallly looking forward to it. The night before it came out, a friend who had advance tickets texted me to tell me that it was very scary, and probably not ideal for a five year-old to see.

(Here, I need to explain something. Lear is a timid movie-goer. He's terrified of Sleeping Beauty. He refused to finish watching The Little Mermaid after Ursula's first appearance. Spider Man caused him to run out of our living room screaming, after which he hid behind his bed. We have to ambush him to take him to any movies, and we only go to very kid-friendly movies like Up. Which he thought was scary.  Transformers 1, however, he loved. Go figure.)

Anyway, we talked about it. We definitely don't want him to see anything scary or bad, but we had already promised him that Cory would take him to see it. My brother Barton, who was visiting, pointed out that Lear may not remember the movie when he's older, but he will definitely remember that we broke a promise that was important to him. We think it's important for Lear to know that he can count on us, so Cory took him to the movie. (Mental note: don't make promises that you'll regret later!)

Lear spent the whole day trembling with excitement. I think he was more thrilled to see Cory come home from work than I've ever seen him. He left our house chanting "I'm going to see Transformers!" over and over. This mood didn't last. Cory said that Lear spent most of the movie clutching Cory's arm desperately, and sometimes with his face buried in his arm, too. Cory offered to take Lear home several times, but Lear refused, and toughed it out. When they got home, he ate the Happy Meal that Cory picked up for him because he looked "shell-shocked" quietly, with a zombified look on his face. (Side note: I suggested that Cory take him to Burger King, where they have Transformers toys, and Cory said that he thought it wouldn't be a good idea, under the circumstances.) After a little time, he felt more like himself again, and we sent him to bed. Oddly enough, he didn't have any nightmares.

Now, we and Lear have an agreement: Daddy will preview all movies, and then decide if it's too scary for Lear to see. Lear was the one who suggested it. I wish it didn't take a bad experience for all of us to come to this conclusion, but we're not perfect parents, and we're definitely still learning. At least we kept out promise.

P.S. He still loves Transformers - just the toys and cartoons, though.

Lear quote:  "Oh, snap!"

Ella quote: "Ella to the rescue!"

Miscellany

Image
This is a self portrait taken at the Zoo Train, on our preschool's Zoo Day.

Image
This is a wasp we found on our dying maple tree. It's hard to tell in the picture, but its about five inches from head to the end of the ovipositor. (That's the long thing that looks like the scariest stinger on the planet.) It uses that thing to bore into a rotten tree, then lay it's egg into a grub, where it's young will eat it from the inside out. Gruesome, huh?

Image

Image
Lear with his "Best Buddy" Kaeden and their friend Skye. Kaeden and Lear were well nigh inseparable at school. They both have an obsession with Transformers.

Lear quote: "Dear Heavenly Father, please bless our food. Bless the potato bug that is lost in our house that it won't get squished. Also, bless the snail on the play table in my room that is won't get lost, too..." (We now have a rule that the kids aren't allowed to bring things with more than four legs and less than two into the house.)

I can't think of an Ella quote. I'll have to try to have two for next time.

Water damage

Image
Image
These are pictures of our flooded garage. We've been having almost daily thunderstorms here in Utah, and one was incredible. We were supposed to go to a band party that night (yes, I play in a band. www.kairobynight.com if you're interested) but we spent the evening pumping water out of our garage. Thanks for the Shop Vac, Brei and Kelly! These pics were taken after the water had receded a bit.

Memorial Day

We went to visit my parents in Oregon over Memorial Day weekend. Here are some random thoughts and facts:

Ella made the 13-hour drive to Oregon without accidents. Or diapers. I tried to buy Pull-Ups "just in case" but Ella threw such a fit at Target about it that I threw caution to the wind, and just took all the panties we own. On the way home, we had a bomb. On the whole, though, she did a good job.

We got to spend the whole weekend with my parents and my brother Barton. Usually he's working, but the one upside to being out of a job in these tough times is that he has lots of time to spend with us - and we loved it.

We love going to the Oregon coast. We love sand, waves, sea lions, and the aquarium.

We saw an eight foot long sturgeon - underwater. If you're ever in the Columbia River Gorge, remember: the Bonneville Dam and fish hatchery are free, and very cool.

Lear threw a fit because he only got one new Transformer a day while at grandma and grandpa's house. When I tried to tell my mom to tone it down, she said, "Tia, it's my job to spoil them, and yours to mediate the effects." Thanks, Mom.

One of the reasons I left Oregon were springtime allergies. Now, whenever I go back, they gleefully take their revenge. Curse you, pollen!

I have a very cute new nephew. The other two are pretty darned cute, too. I loved watching my kids playing with their cousins. There wasn't even much fighting.

My brother Bronson came with us. He slept for about 97% of the drive - that's about 25 hours total. It's like he has a mutant power or something. Thank God you're here, Narcoleptic Boy!

Lear quote: "I missed Cosy so much it put a tear in my eye." (Cosy is our annoying cat.)

Ella quote, said after a compliment on her cute curls: "Yeah, I look good."

Life Lessons

As almost everyone knows, Lear is obsessed with Transformers. In fact, he is going to see the new Transformers movie with his dad and uncle when it comes out - and this boy is afraid of a long list of other movies half as scary. A few months ago, he declared that he was bored with the toys he already had, and I explained to him that I'm only going to buy him toys for his birthday and Christmas. He added up the months until his birthday (in October) and was very disappointed that he would have to wait that long. So, as parents who are trying really hard to be good parents, we saw an opportunity.

Cory made a job chart, and Lear had to complete every job every day, and if he did this, at the end of the week, we'd pay him for his work. We priced the Transformers that he wanted, and we worked it out so that he'd have to save for ten weeks to earn enough money. So, for ten weeks, Lear has been cleaning his room and clearing away his dinner dishes (among other things) and faithfully saving his money for his Transformer. Some days he did this more cheerfully than others, but he did it.

Well, today was the day. He's been counting down the days for about five days. This morning, it was the first thing he thought about. He told everyone at preschool about it. Several times. After lunch, I paid him for his last week, and we went to the Red Store (that's what he calls Target). I purposely had him save a little less than what he needed for the toy he's been talking about, so he'd learn about budgeting and saving and stuff. He went straight for Grimlock, a Dinobot for those of you not in the know, but it was $23.00, and Lear only had $19. I thought he'd be all upset, but he simply chose one he could afford, and decided to use his leftover money to save for next time. He got a Cybertron Mode Optimus Prime - the sixth Optimus Prime in his collection.  And he is already planning his next purchase in about ten weeks.

Lear quote, chanted over and over at Target:"I'm getting a Transformer! I'm getting a Transformer!"

Ella quote: "Mommy, I swallowed Sleeping Beauty's pink shoe." She opened her mouth and pointed at her throat. "Get it out!" (This is where I roll my eyes and sigh bitterly.)

Here's a whopper for you.

Lear has a little problem with Ring Around the Mouth - a little red, irritated ring from licking his lips too much. Somehow, he has inherited this habit from his uncle Bronson, who had a problem with it when he was Lear's age. I've been putting Vaseline on it at night, which helps a lot, but recently I've noticed that it's getting worse. I asked Lear about it, and the conversation went something like this:

Me: "Lear, why are your lips getting worse?"
Lear: "Oh, the stuff you put on it got accidently wiped off."
Me: "Accidently? How did that happen?"
Lear: "Well actually, my finger accidently fell in my cup of water on my night stand, and then I touched it to my nose, but it slipped off and it rubbed around my mouth like this." He rubbed his finger around his mouth, slowly and deliberately, all the way around. "It happened before I could stop it. It was out of my control."

I've started putting the Vaseline on when I go to sleep at night, after Lear's been asleep for a couple hours. It's been getting much better.

Lear quote: "Get away from me, you nasty predator!" Said while playing a game with Papa. Does he even know what a predator is?

Ella quote: "Go away! You NOT my friend anymore!" Let the drama begin!

Lear's artwork

Image
ImageThis is something Lear made at church for my dad. The teacher spelled "Janes" wrong - easy mistake. We've called Cory's dad Papa and mine Grandpa Janes to differentiate the two Grandpa Ja(y)neses.  Lear was so proud that he drew Grandpa's glasses and brown hair. The text on the reverse side says basically that Lear loves Grandpa because he goes down the scary slide with him. Considering my father's disability, it goes to show how much he loves his grandchildren, and that he will do anything for them. My father may be a man of few words, but his heart is big nonetheless.

Lear quote: "Mommy, why do your eyes always look so tired?" You can always trust a child to be brutally honest. My reply? "Because you and Ella never let me sleep in."

Ella quote: "I not a pin-cess, I a cupcake!" I had called her my little princess, but she objected, because she was wearing her cupcake pajamas, not her princess pajamas.

Easter pics

Image
ImageAs per my mother's request, here are pictures of Lear and Ella on Easter. Ella is my mother's only granddaughter (she has three and a half grandsons), and she is having way too much fun shopping for adorable little girl dresses. Ella is better dressed than everyone else in the house.

Lear quote: "Mommy, why are some people bad?" How does one answer a question like that?

Ella quote: "I not a drama queen! I a drama pin-cess!"

Be Careful What You Wish For

For all of you who haven't had the (dubious) honor of hearing me complain lately, here' the rundown of my schedule for the last month or so:

18 rehearsals
10 concerts
18 flute lessons
3 houseguests for 1 week
2 birthdays (Cory's and mine.)
1 dinner party for my grad school flute teacher

One year ago I was complaining that I didn't have enough to do. I was praying for more opportunities to play the flute, for validation and a little confidence. I won my first audition in several years last August, which has lead to many, many opportunities for me. I 'm thankful that my prayers were answered - although I'd like to spread out the blessings a bit, so they're not so concentrated in the same 33-day period. Now my last wish is to get paid for more than about 10% of it! How about more like 90%?

Ella quote: "Mama is my best friend!" (I hope she still says this when she's 16! And the rest of her life, for that matter.)

Classic Lear quote: "That scared my P.P.!" (P.P. has always been Lear's word for his privates. He said this when were driving fast over the part of Redwood Road that goes by Utah Lake that goes up and down a lot like a roller coaster.)

A Plethora of Lear quotes

Some things Lear has said lately:

While playing at a treehouse at Wheeler Farm, where there was a woman playing enthusiastically with some kids: "Hey, Mommy, I wish you were fun like her."

Lear was trying to find a way for me to take our only car to a concert and Daddy to take the kids to a park, and he said this: "Maybe if we - no - how about if... um... I know, Daddy can -  but oh no. Well, perhaps - I don't have a plan."

We cuddle in my bed most mornings, while I snooze and the kids watch shows. Lear looked at my t-shirt and said, "Mommy, do you recognize that your shirt is creeping up?"

We have a folding treadmill. One day I came downstairs, and it was open. Lear admitted to pulling the pin that keeps it folded, and when I told him that if it had fallen on him or Ella, it would have killed or injured them, he said, "Well, it's a good thing we ran."

Again, said during morning cuddle time: "Mommy, I just can't live without you, for always."

Things that have cracked open recently

Image
Some of you may be wondering why I put a picture of our toilet here. Look closely at seat on the right side. See that line? It's a crack. Someone sat on our toilet, and broke the seat with his amazing butt. Ever been pinched by your toilet seat before?

These are the first apricot blossoms on our tree this year. JOY! I am so, so, so happy it's spring!

Lost and Found Pictures

Image
This is a picture of Ella's first pigtails. She finally let me put some in her hair, although they only lasted about ten minutes, tops. I've always said that it's a good thing her hair is cute whether I do something to it or not, both because she won't let me, and because I'm not very good at it.

Image
On a visit to Oregon when Lear was about 18 months old, an older gentleman in the airport took Lear's picture and e-mailed it to us, because he had "the right hat on." I found this picture when cleaning out my e-mail.

Image
For Valentine's Day, Cory got me a digital photo frame, and put the memory card from our camera in it. What was left on the camera's internal memory were a few pictures from a couple years ago that we didn't know we had, like this one of Ella. I think she's probably six months old here. I LOVE the expression on her face.

Lear quote: "Hey, what are those black spiky things in your armpit, Mommy? Hair?

Ella quote: "I have a cute little girl tummy. Mommy has a big, big tummy."

Cory is 30 today

Thirty Reasons I Love Cory:

1. Those curly blond locks.
2. He's tall and hot. And that butt....
3. He's so patient with me and the kids.
3. He actually helps out around the house.
4. I can make him laugh himself silly.
5. He doesn't let small things bother him.
6. He knows the capitol of Mongolia. And just about everywhere else.
7. He cares about his community, his country, and his planet.
8. He's conscientious at work, but doesn't bring it home with him.
9. His addiction to Dr. Pepper rivals mine.
10. The way his face lights up when he sees his kids when he gets home.
11. I know he's home before he steps foot in the door, because he is always whistling.
12. He compliments me every day.
13. He supports me in my flute endeavors, even though it often means being alone in the evenings.
14. He is constantly learning - and he remembers almost all of it.
15. He understands how difficult being a stay at home mom can be, and is always looking for ways to help me cope better.
16. I could spend every moment of every day with him, and it wouldn't be enough.
17. He has his priorities straight.
18. He doesn't have to have every new toy and gadget that comes out.
19. He loves the outdoors, and is looking forward to teaching our kids to, as well.
20. He is open to new foods, and is willing to try anything. He's even learned to like kimchee.
21. Those random loud noises.
22. He is willing to make sacrifices for his family's sake - like a second car, riding the bus to work, iPods, video games, and season tickets to the Jazz.
23. He will play Hide and Seek and other silly games with our children for hours.
24. He is ALWAYS willing to help others - and he does it cheerfully, without complaint.
25. When he proposed, he forgot the ring - he was so nervous he left it in the car.
26. The respect with which he treats his parents and grandparents.
27. The wonderful friendships he shares with his brothers.
28. Those mad French skills.
29. He truly trusts me.
30. I have never been able to be so completely open with anyone else, without fear, self- consciousness, or insecurity.

I could add a thousand more reasons. I love you Cory. Happy birthday.

Lear quote: "I'm gonna kiss your cheek, mommy, because I don't like your minty toothpaste."

Ella quote: "Shake your booty! Shake your booty!" Shouted as loud as she could at the grocery store.

Evidence of Lear's indiscretion

Cory takes his laptop on all our trips, probably because he gets itchy if he is offline for more than 6 hours. When we got to our hotel room, he broke it out to take advantage of the free wi-fi, and this is what we found:

Image
"Oooooh, Daddy's computer! How do I get on YouTube?"

Image
"Hey, that's me! It's taking my picture! Sweeet..."

Image
"Here's a block. Pretty, pretty block... but I can think of something COOLER...."

Image
"TRANSFORMERS! Yeah, Baby - where's the rest of my collection?"

Image
"Oh no, Daddy's home! Close it, quick! He'll never know."

We had asked him earlier that day if he was the one who moved the computer - he said no. These pictures are only five out of about twenty-two, so we had plenty of evidence to the contrary. Here's a tip for the future, Lear: Always clean up the crime scene - thoroughly.

What I learned on V-Day

Cory and I went on a trip to St George this weekend, sans kids. It's the first time we've gone somewhere by ourselves since Lear was born - so over five years. Cory had to talk me into it, because I was paranoid about being that far away from them, but we had a great time. We spent most of the weekend going through fancy houses on the St George Parade of Homes, but Saturday night, we went to a movie: He's Just Not That Into You.

We thought it would be a fun romantic comedy, but I have to say, about halfway through, I wanted to leave. All the relationships in the movie were falling apart, and the one married couple in the film was in trouble, because of the man having an affair. I was thinking, "Why are we seeing a movie about how much love and relationships suck on our special Valentine's Day trip?" Luckily, things were brighter by the end of the movie - but it taught Cory and me something: we are very lucky. We have a great relationship, a wonderful marriage, and a happy life together. We've never played stupid mind games with each other, we have the same goals and priorities, and we got married for all the right reasons. I don't want to get too sappy here, but I just have this to say: I deeply love my husband, I'm eternally grateful he seems to think I'm cool too, and we are very lucky to have found each other.  We really have it good.

Lear quote: "I am going to miss you, Mommy, because I love you so much."

Ella quote: "OK, I gonna lose interest very soon."

Coming soon: Evidence of Lear's indiscretion

Princesses and abscesses.

ImageThis is a picture of Ella with a train stuck in her hair. I'm really not sure why she decided to put a motorized toy train on her head, but I guess being two, she doesn't really need a reason. Luckily, simply putting the train in reverse was sufficient to get it out. I haven't ever cut Ella's hair, because she didn't have any for so long, so I was reluctant to put it to scissors.

Ella has been playing a game with me lately, which she calls "Mommy's Princess Dress." This consists of me sitting on the floor of the kitchen (it has to be a certain spot in the kitchen) and Ella draping a blanket around my shoulders. She likes to arrange the blanket so that it lays just right on my arms and legs. Then she will announce that I need to put my keys in my pocket, and put her hand into the side of her diaper and pull out an imaginary key with a "Ta-da!" and place it in a fold of the blanket. Note that I said the side of the diaper, and not the front or back. It's to be hoped that the "key" she puts in my pocket is clean. I thought this game was very cute the first couple times we played it, but after I sat on our oak floors for almost an hour yesterday playing it, I have to admit that I'm losing my enthusiasm - but not Ella. Now, when she wants to play it, I set the kitchen timer.

Lear had a tough week last week - Thursday, Friday, and Saturday he complained off and on that his mouth hurt. We tried to figure it out ourselves, and he swore that it wasn't his tooth, but his cheek that hurt. We couldn't decide whether to take him to a dentist or a doctor, until Saturday when he was screaming and writhing in pain. The painkillers we were giving him weren't helping, and so I took him to Kid's Care. He cried and screamed all the way there, and fell asleep about a block away. He pouted while I checked him in - until he saw the fish tank, after which he was remarkably happy for a child who was screaming in pain not ten minutes earlier. The doctor looked at his mouth from every angle, and told us it was a toothache. Doctor: 1, Parents: 0. Great. It's Saturday, and we can't get him into a dentist until Monday. Oh, the fun we were in for. Monday couldn't come too fast for any of us. But come it did, and when we took him in to the dentist, we found out that he did have an abscess in one of his molars. We then had to sit through him screaming and crying while the dentist gave him a shot, although once he calmed down, he did very well. I swear he brushes every day, but I guess not well enough. He's still complaining about his cheek hurting a week later, but now I suspect that either  he really likes his Motrin, or his six-year-old molars are starting to come in as well.

Lear quote: "Well, I guess that why you shouldn't be a slime monster." (Comment made while watching the beginning of Monsters, Inc.)

Ella quote: "I want Daddy to come home NOW!"

I couldn't resist!

Image
Ella has been anti-diaper lately so we've been letting her wet her pants a couple times a day. She makes it to the toilet maybe once a day, so it's a start and we're optimistic. Last night, however, her little crack was peeping out of her cute cabana pants, and I just had to take a picture. Every parent needs blackmail pictures for use at a later date, right?

A surprise visit

Image
ImageThe top picture is of Ella in Time Out. She refused to sit on her bum for Time Out, so protested by sitting in Time Out on her head. I didn't help her push up into the headstand, nor did I help her stay there - she did it all by herself. I guess she got my gymnastics genes. I was having a very hard time not laughing at her, even though she was screaming mad the whole time.

The other picture is our kitchen, and it's new grayish-purple paint. I really like how it turned out a lot.

Thursday night, my mother called me up to tell me that her jury duty had been cancelled (I didn't even know she had jury duty), and that they wanted to make the thirteen-hour drive to Salt Lake to see the grandkids, since she had all this time to spare. I told them to come on down. So, Friday they came with my oldest bro Barton and stayed until Monday morning. It was a short and sweet visit, and we were thrilled to have them - especially the kids. We didn't tell them that they were coming, so Lear and Ella got a big surprise when they showed up on our doorstep.

Finally, another Lear story. You all know Lear loves Transformers. He also loves to save the Transformer boxes. He had one in particular that he's been saving since Thanksgiving. He's been keeping his collection in it, but it was getting very ratty and ugly, so Cory and I secretly threw it out when we did our de-cluttering of the house a week or so ago. When Lear noticed, he was MAD! He threw one of his rare fits, and demanded that we dig through the dumpster to retrieve it - we told him that it was too late, and that it was already at the recycling center. We finally pacified him by showing him that he could arrange them to display on a newly-empty bookcase that we had relocated to his room. He kept telling me that he couldn't wait until someone came to visit so he could show them his Transformers on the shelf. Now, if you enter his room, he will stand next to the bookcase, wordlessly gesturing toward the bookcase (one arm extended, palm up and fingers together) and waiting expectantly for your admiration.

Lear quote: "Mom, why do we have those short spiky things on our eyes?"
         Mom: "Do you mean eyelashes?"

Ella quote: Mom: "Ella, stand at the window and wave bye-bye to Grandma, Grandpa, and Barton."

Ella: "No, I don't want to!"

Mom: "Lear is at the window and waving goodbye."

Ella: "I wan' go to da winnow an' wave bye-bye, too!"
