Welcome 2026

In 2025 I averaged a post a month on this blog, I think my Dayre account fared better but not much. I also wrote more in my last physical journal. It makes me think it’s time to stop this blog but I’ve kept it for so many years, since my uni days so I can’t bear to close it down. So once a month it will have to be…

Image

The highlights of the year were easily our trips abroad. KL was so relaxing and fun, lots of good food, shopping and family activities such as Sunway Lagoon. I’m a bit sad we won’t be stopping by KL this year but we should really try other cities in Malaysia, we can always return the year after.

Image

The Shanghai trip was also memorable and opened our eyes to the wonders of China. We were wowed by the convenience powered by technology and can’t wait to return. I’m hoping we can squeeze in a trip in 2026 but China requires quite a lot of planning so I’m not sure whether it will pan out.

Image

One thing I loved about this year is the kids learning guitar from my father. I hope this continues for a long long time and the kids don’t give up halfway. I will encourage my girls to keep learning from their very talented Gung Gung, they have no idea how lucky they are to learn from him, but when they grow up they will understand.

Image

My sisters and I accompanying my parents to watch Cliff Richard (and Hank!) live was probably another highlight. I wanted 2025 to be all about creating memories for my parents and I think we did have some wonderful moments.

Image

Camping with friends, long dinners and catch ups were all lovely. Maybe we will be able to have more gatherings like these in 2026, certainly I feel we had quite a few gatherings in 2025 with my different groups of friends.

Image

We had many family gatherings in 2025, from learning to make kuih to wrapping bak zhang. I’m excited for our upcoming Singapore trip too, it’s been a while since we’ve had a sisters and parents trip, the cousins will love hanging out together too.

Image

This year was the year of lots of walks, daily running and being active.

Image

I like it that the girls like walking to the park of the forum with me, that they love skating, cycling, swimming. It’s not something that I did as a child (so hot in Malaysia) so I hope they have an active lifestyle in Australia and get plenty of exercise and sunshine.

Image

I’m pleased that I managed to close my minimum 30 mins exercise ring 338 days out of 365! I really tried to be consistent and make it a daily habit to be on the threadmill, it wasn’t easy especially during days when I was not well or hot summer days. I missed days mostly when we were travelling and on the plane, but I think overall I did pretty well! I want to continue this is 2026 and up my exercise goal, maybe 40 mins a day as a minimum?

While I don’t weigh myself and don’t see any difference in weight, I genuinely felt better and stronger in 2025. Being active and physical also helped me mentally feel stronger and I hope to grow from strength to strength in 2026.

Where I fell short in 2026 was my temper, my patience towards my family and especially the girls. Gentle parenting is definitely not in my DNA, and sometimes even though I knew my words were cruel I didn’t stop them from coming out. I really want to work on this in 2026, to be a more loving and caring mum, wife, daughter and sister. May 2026 bring us lots of blessings, an abundance of happiness, luck and good health.

Christmas Eve musings 2025

Image

My girls, their xiu xius and Jingle the Elf. How many more years of Christmas magic do we have? They have so much pleasure with their elf, his shenanigans and Santa. Meanwhile mummy is tired from all the elf tricks haha. It’s been a tiring but fun lead up to Christmas, I am very ready for the holidays now.

Image

Gerry dropped by with salmon as gifts. 我了解他的心意,and I am thankful and appreciative but I really haven’t done anything for him that warrants all this. Thank you for thinking of us as always.

Image

And then there’s our Korean friends. Overly generous, polite to a tee, kind to a fault. Their children walk all over their kind parents, I only pray and hope that when they mature they will shower their parents with the love they were given since young. I think they will because surely kind people give birth to kind children ?

I like to think that I am generous to people I love and care about and only frugal towards myself. When I give, I never expect anything in return. But I am no saint, I have to say that it still feels nice when someone buys me coffee after I’ve bought them coffee many times. It’s nice to not be taken for granted and to be appreciated.

So when my friends are overly generous and shower me with gifts, I tell myself that it’s ok to accept the gifts because I know I’ve been a good friend to them too.

Image

My greatest joy this year has been watching my kids learn to play guitar from my ah pa. I pray and hope his love and talent for music can be passed down to his grandkids. My daughters don’t know how lucky they are to have my father as their shifu. This will be a lifelong memory that they and I will cherish for the rest of our lives.

Saitaomei is 8

Image

The happiest 8 year old in the world. Despite R and I being introverts, we somehow made this lovely little girl who is always bright, cheerful and positive. She is always so considerate and loving, and is my affectionate, sweet baby girl.

Image

She was praying for a long time before she blew out her candle. Knowing this girl’s personality, she was probably praying for her Gung Gung who is her favourite person in the world. I just asked her about it and she said she prayed for her cousins and sister to be nice to her, and for her family to be blessed, and thanked Gung Gung for teaching her guitar and Mah Mah for teaching her NAPLAN. No wonder she took so long haha.

Image

Her doting grandparents.

Image

Hijinx hotel for challenge rooms as a birthday activity. It was actually a really fun family activity, both R and I had lots of fun too.

Image

Birthday lunch at her favourite restaurant with her favourite people in the world. I think it’s safe to say this sweet little girl of mine had the best birthday 🎁 .

Cliff Richard and Hank Marvin

Image

I think the three daughters were all holding their breath until Hank Marvin made his grand entrance at the concert. This was the moment we’d been praying for, that my ah Pa would get to see his ultimate idol play some of his favourite songs live. Hank didn’t disappoint, his guitar playing was so beautiful and his sound was so clear and amazing. I can see why my father worshipped him growing up. The songs he played, The Young Ones, Summer Holiday, familiar songs that we’ve heard our father play over and over since our youth. It still amazes me to hear my own daughter playing and singing to Summer Holiday, her guitar teacher being none other than her favourite Gung Gung.

Image

When Saitaoha and Saitaomei were born, I realised how hard my parents worked to allow us to build the foundation for all our dreams to come true. As parents, we want our children to have the best lives, we want them to live their dreams. But I realised that as we grow older, we not only want to make our children’s dreams come true, we also want our parents’ dreams to come true!

I hope my parents enjoyed themselves and we can continue making wonderful memories together as a family.

Camping in 2025

I think the last time we went camping was perhaps 8 years ago. Our camping gear was covered with cobweb where it had been lying untouched in my father’s garage. When R and I started wiping down the gear and loading it in my mum’s car, I couldn’t help but think eBay were we thinking, scheduling a camping trip mid school term when we’re so busy at work too.

But by the time I left work on Friday and we set off to Lake Leschenaultia, my heart was singing.

Image

It wasn’t easy setting up our tent after so many years. Our tent was outdated and our skills too haha.

Image

But when it was all up, we were excited and ready for our camping weekend.

Image

Korean bbq for dinner with our Korean friends. Everything was delicious.

Image

It was such a thrill having a campfire, in our years of camping we’ve never had one so we were all ready with our marshmallows.

Image

Our gazebo was the most well lit, our friends brought twinkly lights and with the campfire going, the ambience was top notch.

Image

Checking out the lake the next day. The whole trip was about the kids and letting them make memories with their best friends. Whether or not they stay friends when they grow up, they will always cherish and remember these moments of youth and friendship.

Image

Haha photo bomber in the background

Image

Will they be friends when they grow up ?

Image

Having so much fun together.

Image

Playing together in their tents.

Image

While the adults played poker and card games outside!

Image

My first time camp fire gazing and I’m hooked !

Image

Honestly I think the kids had a gazillion marshmallows.

Image

See that look of contentment.

Image

The girls braved the cool weather to go snorkelling but lasted about 20 minutes max haha.

Image

Hahahaha.

Image

Icy poles and ice creams everyday. I bet they wish they could go camping everyday.

Image

We cooked all our meals, I really enjoyed every one of them. Camping food is a real highlight for me.

Image

Our kind friend, father of their best friends. It is actually really heartwarming watching R’s friendship with him blossoming. Two shy guys who just really like each other .

Image

I also really like my friend, she is so kind and caring. It’s difficult to make new friends in this day and age so I really treasure our growing friendship.

Image

But nothing beats their friendship, they scream, giggle, squabble and laugh so much together.

Image

I miss our cozy tent already. Looking forward to our next camping trip!

KL trip 2025

Image

Us at the airport before jetting off to KL. I don’t enjoy this part because I dislike aeroplanes so much, but I can’t deny the anticipation and excitement in the air is exhilarating.

Image

Our family of Miffy keychains. I think this trip was especially relaxing because it was really just us.

Image

The red eye flight was terrible and we didn’t sleep a wink. By the time we reached the hotel it was already 5am. But we were too excited to go to sleep so went out kopitiam hunting instead.

Image

First kopi with chee cheong fun for breakfast. We were actually too tired to enjoy the food, but I remember enjoying the coffee. Nothing beats Yakun kopi for me, but I would still take a Malaysian kopi over Australian flat whites any day.

Image

The first few days were lots of window shopping, photo taking and just hanging out together.

Image

The girls discovered the joy of getting their hair washed and cut. They liked it so much we let them get a hair wash again the next day.

Image

We spent many many hours in the swimming pool. I think we only skipped a couple of days the whole time we were there, and that was because it was either raining or we went to the water park.

Image

We’ve all decided that Sunway Lagoon was the highlight of our trip. The zero queues meant we went on our favourite rides again and again. Being all water babies, there was something glorious about walking around completely wet being splashed constantly.

Image

I think the girls enjoyed being with their cousin and yee yee a lot.

Image

They were the three musketeers this trip. All have grown up so much that they don’t need much supervision.

Image

Our love with Mixue from the Shanghai trip continues.

Image

I feel like I have many many photos of them with a Mixue icecream in hand.

Image

Our love for Luckin coffee also continues! I love Luckin.

Image

Hahaha the two of them were happy to have each other’s company.

Image

Saitaomei has a bizarre love for Labubu and we ended up lining up at Pop Mart to get her one. It was fascinating to see Labubu fanatics up close and their obsession.

Image

We visited so many shopping centres.

Image

Diwali decorations were up and ready for the upcoming festival.

Image

We also enjoyed the Mid autumn festival decorations.

Image

Mamak food was drinks was a highlight of the trip.

Image

This was honestly so delicious especially wash down with a rich and sweet Teh Tarik. Heaven.

Image

We had many delicious mamak takeaways which we had in the comfort of our hotel room. This was the favourite part of the day for me, when we’re all clean and settled after a full day, eating, snacking, watching tvb dramas and Chinese movies on our blurry tv.

Image

Local guava was lovely.

Image

A different kind of mooncake gifted by my BIL’s sister.

Image

There was lots of indoor playground time.

Image

R found his kopitiam, one of our better meals in KL.

Image

He was wowed by his chendol.

Image

We also had lots of fast food like A &W because of my angmok chiak Saitaoha.

Image

I liked it that we experienced public transport a lot. We also used Grab a few times and for some reason we had some disabled drivers for a few trips. I am glad that Grab has provided job opportunities for people with disabilities that would otherwise struggle to make ends meet.

Image

We did visit some tourist spots but not many.

Image

They enjoyed their art activity and I hope to frame up their artwork in our new house some day.

Image

It was a wonderful holiday, one of my most relaxing holidays to date. I think it is because we catered for no one except our own family, we ate when we wanted to, we didn’t even we were full, we stayed at home for dinner if we didn’t feel like going out, we swam everyday without thinking of having to visit tourist attractions. It was really quality time spent with my family and also my sister’s family. Lovely lovely mid autumn holiday.

Happy birthday Ah Ma

Image

It’s ah ma’s birthday today. She ended up cooking chicken soup birthday noodles for herself and the whole family 😅, told her that I should be cooking for her instead. But I guess that’s epitome of my mum, always sacrificing and doing so much for her family and children.

Image

I think the biggest beneficiaries are my kids. They don’t know it yet but when they’re older they will look back to their childhood and it will be surrounded by wonderful memories created by their loving grandparents who take such good care of them.

Image

So glad the sisters could take my mum out for a birthday lunch. I wish I could have gone too but then I think I’m luckier than my sisters because I live just right next door.

Image

I think these are rare and lovely pictures of my sister and my mum. Love the idea of them having afternoon tea and coffee, can imagine them gossiping away haha. We get on each others’ nerves a lot but we also have a good time together.

Image

This is why ah ma was too stuffed to really enjoy her dinner with a side of sashimi hahaha. Happy birthday ah ma, may you stay positive, blessed and healthy always.

Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day to the best father in the world.

Image

Brought my parents out a The Cray lunch tomorrow celebrate Father’s Day. I think Saitaomei was the happiest because it’s her favourite restaurant in the whole world and she was there with her favourite Gung Gung and Mah Mah. I love it that both grandpa and grandkid love their seafood and enjoy their meals together so much.

Image

Happy girl with her silly sister at the back.

Image

Silly faces.

Image

A photo with their papa from Friday night. We do enjoy our family outings a lot.

Image

On Father’s Day morning the kids went to church with their grandparents so R and I went out for brunch. We were thinking of trying out a new cafe but everywhere was packed with Father’s Day crowds so we somehow ended up at Dome’s. Luckily it was still a nice brunch.

Image

I cooked my father’s favourite chicken rice and tofu and minced pork dish for dinner. Ah ma steamed a fish which is R’s favourite, lucky papas indeed.

Image

R is the only papa I know that will spend hours sewing clothes for the mini Miffys. It started with my mini Miffy keychain that I received from R as a present and love, the kids were very envious so I asked R to get one for each of us. Then he made an outfit for my mini and of course every other miffy needed to have an outfit too. The clothes are all made from the children’s baby clothes so they are all special to us. We are all going to hang them on our bags when we go travelling 😝.

The weekend has charged me up and I’m now ready for the gruelling work week ahead.

Spring is in the air

Image

Proud of my little girl who did really well during her Awesome Aussie presentation. August had really been a full on month, both at work and with the kids. The wet winter weather didn’t help as well, everything felt difficult and overwhelming.

Image

We caught up with Jaso for a mid week dinner. I was glad we had something nice to end what was otherwise a horrible day at work. I’m changing bosses again, not that my current boss was any great shakes, but after months and months of speculation and him being completely checked out from work, it was just a very underwhelming and uncomfortable period.

Image

I’ve missed Do-dough, the first bakery that made me realise how wonderful a fresh out of the oven pain au chocolate can be. I actually got off the bus to pick up these sweet treats for my team prior to work, they really needed a pick me up after such a horrible work week/month.

Image

I already knew I would enjoy bringing Saitaoha for her very first high school interview. She did really well and I was amazed at how my daughter can now hold her own. I loved spending time with her, just two of us on the bus, we both also enjoyed buying kolo mee back for her dear grandparents.

Image

She’s really a lot more nowadays. I can only hope that this becomes a life long love for her. I remember being so obsessed with my books when I was young that I would bring it into the bathroom with me when I showered. This week I picked up a favourite James Herriot book and felt comforted by the familiar warm stores of animals and a kind vet.

Image

TGIF at my sister’s! I was craving Korean bbq and she obliged 🥰. I really enjoyed this meal so much.

Image

The kids are now learning to play guitar from my father. We gathered on Saturday for their weekly guitar session and I made mian bao xia. I still need to perfect this recipe. I pray that the kids will continue learning from ah pa for a long long time, I want them to inherit my father’s musical talent and love for music.

Image

A new cafe with R, recommended by a school grandma. The pastries were very good but the service was a bit stressed. I think the Malaysian owner is a very good pastry chef but not a very efficient waiter 😆.

This was the first weekend when it really felt like spring had arrived. I am hoping the warm and sunny weather stays and that it signals warmer, calmer days ahead where birds sing and flowers bloom again.

Wake me up when August ends

It’s only the first week of August and already I’m worried about surviving the rest of the month. The kids will have their dance concert next week, heralding the many early morning practise sessions. This is especially hard on my parents who have to ferry them back and forth during this cold and wet winter season 😓.

Image

We are making the most of weekends, eating out, having family gatherings. I was commenting to my colleague the other day that even though I sometimes have doubts and worries about my current role, I am still very thankful to have a job that doesn’t require me to be ‘on’ during weekends.

Image

I wonder how big the tree in front of the house will be in a few years when we have our new home! Yes we’re finally getting down to building a new house, it is not at the lot I thought it would be, and definitely not within the timeline as well, but at least we’re taking a step forward so I’m happy about that.

Image

Sometimes I have little niggles about our finances, are we biting off more than we can chew? But deep down I know we are ok, the years of frugality have paid off and we do deserve a new home. The girls are my biggest motivation, I really want them to have their own bedrooms and a nice space where they can invite their friends over for play dates etc. The eternal host in me also loves the idea of a big kitchen and being able to invite family and friends over for home cooked meals.

Image

I am looking forward to our holiday in September! It will be nice to just relax and hang out with the kids all day. I just have to survive August and we will be almost there 😄.
