Time To Exit The Matrix‽ Bending Spoons Acquires Vimeo

Neo Bending Spoon 🥄 in The Matrix movie

I was surprised to come across the news (courtesy of @jwildeboer via his Mastodon account) that Bending Spoons will soon be the new overlord proud owner of Vimeo.

Vimeo, Inc. (NASDAQ: VMEO), a leading video platform for business, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Bending Spoons, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $1.38 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, Vimeo shareholders will receive $7.85 per share in cash for each share of Vimeo capital stock that they own. The per-share purchase price represents a 91% premium over Vimeo’s 60-day volume-weighted average share price as of market close on September 9, 2025.

“After a disciplined review of strategic alternatives, the Board unanimously determined that this all-cash transaction delivers compelling, certain value to Vimeo shareholders and positions the company to accelerate its strategic roadmap as part of Bending Spoons,” said Glenn H. Schiffman, Chairman of the Board. “We’re confident they are the right long-term partner for our customers, employees, and brand.”

Vimeo Press Release

This acquisition is excellent news for investors, owners & potentially a few large companies.

Bending Spoons should be able to infuse new capital into Vimeo and attract the attention of large companies that are not too keen on relying on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok for their video hosting needs.

However, for smaller customers & current employees, being acquired by Bending Spoons means the fiscal beatings are about to begin, as the new rulers have a history of leaving unwanted bruises.

Bending Spoons has a pattern of acquiring companies, then laying off staff and cutting features. For example, Bending Spoons acquired note-taking and task management app Evernote in 2022, after which the company laid off most of its U.S. and Chile staff and moved operations to Europe in 2023. Evernote then shut down the Linux and older legacy versions of the app, and then proceeded to place heavy restrictions on the app’s free tier in 2024.

In another example, Bending Spoons acquired WeTransfer in July 2024 and then laid off 75% of its staff a few weeks after. A couple months later, WeTransfer began limiting free users to 10 transfers per month.

TechCrunch

Given Bending Spoons’ history, Vimeo users would be wise to seek out alternatives, as the company will probably begin to reduce features and headcount for the YouTube alternative.

Current Video hosting alternatives include:

Hopefully, over the next few days, many video hosting services will offer a simple solution to export Vimeo videos elsewhere. Until then, folks would be wise to download their content off of Vimeo’s servers.

True Or False: All Fortune 100 CEO’s Oppose Trump In 2024

Featured Image Credit: JDC Events

I came across this segment from the David Pakman Show, & while the title says Fortune 100 CEOs, Jeffrey A. Sonnenfeld says no Fortune 500 CEOs support Donald Trump.

Donald Trump opposed by top 100 CEOs

However, according to an opinion piece by Sonnenfeld, it does seem as if 100% of the Fortune 100 CEOs oppose Trump, according to Sonnefeld—albeit for business reasons.

Mr. Trump continues to suffer from the lowest level of corporate support in the history of the Republican Party.

I know this because I work with roughly 1,000 chief executives a year, running a school for them, which I started 35 years ago, and I speak with business leaders almost every day. Our surveys show that 60 to 70 percent of them are registered Republicans. […]

The MAGA die-hard voices that have Mr. Trump’s ear often have more in common with the far left than with the traditional Republican Party. Mr. Trump and his team are doubling down on some of his most anti-business instincts, including proposing draconian 10 percent tariffs on all imports; unorthodox monetary and fiscal policies, including stripping the Federal Reserve Board of its independence; possibly putting in place yield curve control to force interest rates lower; and devaluing the dollar — all of which would drive inflation much higher. These Trump positions have more in common with Karl Marx than Adam Smith. (New York Times)

Given the draconian business climate that Donald Trump represents, it would not be surprising that 100% of the top Fortune 100 companies oppose Donald Trump.

However, this statement is false for one simple reason, which can be described in two words: Elon Musk.

Image
Screenshot of 50 Pros website

According to 50pros, Tesla is a top Fortune 40 company. Its CEO, Elon Musk, has been cozying up to the former President for several months now, & unless Musk is dissing Donald Trump behind his back, the eccentric CEO may be the only CEO backing the Orange Raging One.

Although I believe most CEOs oppose Donald Trump, I would not be surprised if several would consider backing the ex-president, as they see an alliance as potentially beneficial for their personal & corporate finances.

Note: According to Sonnenfeld, Many CEOs do not like President Joe Biden for what it is worth, but they at least know how to manage to operate around Biden’s business barriers. Trump, on the other hand, is a loose cannon who could end up sinking the whole financial ship.

Europe: Jared Kusher To Replace Albania 🇦🇱 Lagoon Paradise With Hotels‽

Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has ambitious plans for Albania 🇦🇱, a nation easily overlooked within the region of Europe.

However, to bring economic prosperity to Albania 🇦🇱, Kushner may have to pave paradise, & put up a parking lot.

Famous song by Joni Mitchell

The Vjosë delta and its lagoon are under siege. They are set to become the victims of a series of massive coastal tourist developments, partly bankrolled by a company set up by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The hotels and luxury villas will accommodate up to a million visitors arriving annually at a new international airport currently being built on salt marshes around the lagoon. […]

“Vjosë-Nartë is one of the most vital sites for biodiversity, not only within Albania but across Europe,” says Aleksandër Trajçe, executive director of the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), the country’s first environmental organization. “These developments are highly alarming, and we are strongly concerned about losing the last natural coastal areas in the Mediterranean,” says Annette Spangenberg, head of conservation at EuroNatur, an environmental NGO based in Germany. (Yale Environment 360, discovered via Mother Jones)

According to Yale Environment 360, the Albania 🇦🇱 government has already created laws to remove environmental land protections from the region if Jared Kushner follows through on his plans to build 10,000 hotel rooms & villas on site.

If Albania 🇦🇱 were a part of the European Union 🇪🇺, environmentalists could have the project halted by the authority of a higher government. Still, Albania 🇦🇱 only has candidate status (so it is unclear if the EU could legally stop the project).

Environmental groups will attempt to thwart Kushner’s plans by suing the project in court. Still, it is unlikely that Albania 🇦🇱 will reverse course as the project will undoubtedly bring in millions of dollars—but only at the cost of disturbing the pristine environment.

Billionaires To Sports Fans: Pay For Our Overpriced Stadiums Please

If there is one infuriating feature I loathe about the sports industry, it is that most franchise owners expect taxpayers to finance a significant amount of the cost for new or updated stadiums.

Currently, the Kansas City Chiefs (coming off of a Super Bowl win) & the Kansas City Royals each want taxpayers to shoulder the burden of renovating their current stadium or building a new one, respectively.

The Chiefs proposed $800 million in renovations to the GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, of which the owners will only pay $300 million. The Royals, meanwhile, announced in February plans for a brand new stadium estimated to cost $2 billion, only half of which is expected to be paid by the Royals in private funds.

The vote, which will conclude April 2, either will have residents opt to get rid of an existing sales tax that pays a portion of stadium operation fees or replace it with a new one—totaling approximately $2 billion and scheduled for over the course of 40 years—in order to pay a portion of the price. Each team would receive $27 million of tax money annually.

So what will happen if voters reject it? “We’d have to look at all our options,” said Mark Donovan, the president of the Chiefs. “I think they’d have to include leaving Kansas City.” His appeal may very well sway voters, considering there is a long history of these threats working in the city.

Reason

The Kansas City Royals are also threatening to leave, as they know passionate sports fans will harass local politicians on their behalf to raise taxes on an already over-taxed locality.

Locals will usually end up overpaying anyway, with no guarantees that the franchise will remain in the area, as they typically have the option to go elsewhere at a whim.

Compare & contrast this to the New England Patriots (my favorite team in the National Football League), whose owner, Robert Kraft, does not significantly burden taxpayers with a private enterprise.

Robert Kraft discussing in the past about financing Gillette Stadium himself. Also, lots of discussion about Tom Brady the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time)

Kraft, who was born in Brookline, Mass., had been a Patriots fan and season ticket holder for two decades before buying the team. He’d bought the Patriots, in 1994, largely to prevent the previous owner, James Orthwein, from moving the team to St. Louis. But there was still an unresolved issue: the team needed a new stadium. Their stadium at the time had been built in 1971 on the cheap, for about $7 million—which equates to about $42 million in today’s dollars—and was considered a dump. Kraft had explored building a stadium in south Boston, but that fell through. Then he had decided he’d pay for a new stadium himself and build it on his own land in Foxborough, if only the state would chip in money for infrastructure. He had reached an agreement with the state Senate that would have had Massachusetts pay $72 million. But the House, led by Speaker Tom Finneran, wouldn’t approve it. “The House was very, very difficult,” says Tom Birmingham, the Senate president at the time. “Kraft had basically been driven out of Massachusetts.” […]

“What can you do to help us keep the Patriots in Massachusetts?” Rooney asked. Like others around the league, Rooney was concerned about abandoning the Boston TV market. […]

Late in the night, they reached an agreement. Kraft would build the stadium himself, with the help of the NFL’s new loan program, and the state would pay about $70 million for infrastructure improvements in Foxborough. It was remarkably similar to the deal Finneran had originally shot down, which had sent Kraft to Hartford in the first place.

Sports Illustrated, discovered via Reason

Sports owners have the means of covering most, if not all, of the cost when it comes to funding renovations of stadiums or ultimately building new sports stadiums if necessary.

Bill Simmons said it best at the end of his “I Believe” HBO series.

Bill Simmons: “I believe that billionaires should pay for their own f*cking football stadiums.”

Christian Nationalism & The Seven Mountain Mandate

While watching MSNBC, Joy Reid referenced the Seven Mountain Mandate while mentioning the latest strong man obsession by the far right (around the four-minute mark).

Joy Reid discussing latest strategy being proposed by Christian Nationalists by presenting Donald Trump as a “Fun Dictator.”

During a recent interview on the program of self-proclaimed “prophet” and QAnon conspiracy theorist Johnny Enlow, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Parker indicated that he is a proponent of the “Seven Mountain Mandate,” a theological approach that calls on Christians to impose fundamentalist values on all aspects of American life.

Media Matters

For those unfamiliar with the Seven Mountain Mandate (including yours truly), a quick Google search reveals a comprehensive plan to dominate all aspects of American life with theocratic laws.

Here are the seven “mountains” to be transformed, according to the seven mountain mandate:

1) Education
2) Religion
3) Family
4) Business
5) Government/Military
6) Arts/Entertainment
7) Media

These seven sectors of society are thought to mold the way everyone thinks and behaves. So, to tackle societal change, these seven “mountains” must be transformed. The mountains are also referred to as “pillars,” “shapers,” “molders,” and “spheres.” Those who follow the seven mountain mandate speak of “occupying” the mountains, “invading” the culture, and “transforming” or “taking back” society.

God Questions

Joy Reid explains that the Republicans want to initiate a Constitutional Convention & roll back 115 years of “progressive laws” that they view as harmful to the American people & culture as a whole.

Fortunately, Christian Nationalists do not have the numbers to vote in their Seven Mountain Mandate. However, they may not need the majority of the electorate if Republicans successfully re-elect Donald Trump back into the White House (along with a GOP majority in the House & Senate).

Elon Musk Bitterly Admits Ad Boycott Will Kill X (Formally Twitter)

I came across this from @arstechnica & it’s surreal that the world’s richest man does not care about X (formally Twitter) burning to the ground.

Elon Musk bitter that X (formally Twitter) will die

Musk spoke on stage at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit in an interview conducted by journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin. Sorkin asked Musk about trying to gain back advertising from businesses that pulled ads from X after Musk posted a favorable response to an antisemitic tweet.

“I hope they stop. Don’t advertise,” Musk said in response to Sorkin’s question (see video).

Perplexed, Sorkin asked, “you don’t want them to advertise?”

“No,” Musk responded. “What do you mean?” Sorkin asked.

“If somebody is going to try to blackmail me with advertising, blackmail me with money? Go fuck yourself,” Musk said.

Sorkin replied, “but,” and trailed off. Musk wasn’t done. “Go fuck yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is. Hey, Bob!” Musk said. Musk was apparently addressing Disney CEO Bob Iger, who previously said at the conference that advertising on X “was not necessarily a positive” association and so Disney “decided we would pull our advertising.”

Via Ars Technica

Elon Musk is probably going to shut down X, blame the ad boycott & declare bankruptcy for the company. Or Musk could simply try to declare bankruptcy & keep the site alive (albeit barely).

Either way X alternative platforms like Mastodon, Misskey, Threads & even Tumblr will probably experience a surge of signups in the near future.

X (Formally Twitter) Users Reveal Ad Share Revenues Are Down

So TechCrunch was right on the money (literally) that ad spending was massively down on X (formally Twitter) as users who are apart of the Ad Share Revenue program (where you can earn money based upon traffic to your posts) are disappointed by the latest payment.

For those wondering, the primary reason for many advertisers leaving is not due to Media Matters (who Elon Musk is blaming), but due to Musk responding to an antisemitic post that was seen by many (if not most) as an endorsement of white supremacy.

X, the social media company formerly known as Twitter, could lose as much as $75 million in advertising revenue by the end of the year as dozens of major brands pause their marketing campaigns after its owner, Elon Musk, endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory this month.

Internal documents viewed by The New York Times this week show that the company is in a more difficult position than previously known and that concerns about Mr. Musk and the platform have spread far beyond companies including IBM, Apple and Disney, which paused their advertising campaigns on X last week. The documents list more than 200 ad units of companies from the likes of Airbnb, Amazon, Coca-Cola and Microsoft, many of which have halted or are considering pausing their ads on the social network. […]

More than 100 brands are shown as having “fully paused” their ads while dozens of others are listed as “at risk.” Many paused on or after Nov. 15, when Mr. Musk wrote in a post on X that the conspiracy theory that Jewish people supported the immigration of minorities to replace white populations was “the actual truth.”

New York Times (discovered via @Kim on X)

But you can judge for yourself based on how Elon Musk responded to a vile response to a post.

Rumor: Is Automattic (Creators Behind WordPress) Giving Up On Tumblr‽ Update: Automattic Keeping Tumblr Alive!

Image
Tumblr tombstone, discovered via SocioBlend

Update: No need to read the rest of the post, as Matt Mullenweg (CEO of Automattic) has answered a bunch of questions on his Tumblr blog, which basically says they are keeping Tumblr alive & not doing mass firings (as rumored).

Notable points he makes:

The original post will remain below, but it will exist behind a “read more” link for those who are curious. is considered outdated.

According to the rumor circulating on X & Tumblr, Automattic is giving up on Tumblr having a future (note: anyone reading this should receive it with a grain of salt & be very skeptical).

However, with Tumblr shelving ActivityPub support & desperately trying to find ways to be fiscally relevant, there could be a kernel of truth to this “leaked news.”

Image
Alleged leaked message from Automattic, screenshot from imgbb

You win or you learn

We are at the point where after 600+ person-years of effort put into Tumblr since the acquisition in 2019, we have not gotten the expected results from our effort, which was to have its revenue and usage above its previous peaks.

It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. (Hat tip.)

It is better to have tried to summit the peak and failed than never to have tried at all. We have learned a ton on the journey, and honed skills we can use to approach other summits.

As we talked about in the past, if it doesn’t work we’ll have a backup plan and set up the business so we don’t need to let anyone go, we’ll just need to reflect and decide where else we should concentrate our energy together. This plan is happening now: the majority of the 139 people in Bumblr [sic] will switch to other divisions. No plans for any switches in Happiness or T&S.

We assume the first choice for everyone working on Tumblr is to continue working on Tumblr, but we’re going to give everyone an opportunity to to have a “top three” ranked list of what other things around Automattic they would be interested in working on. To infuse some Tumblr mojo.

Texted copy of alleged leaked info

A Tumblr user who works in the tech sector (specifically supporting enterprise software) sums up the “leaked info” on a Tumblr post that became way too popular:

tumblr has basically said: this website is not a revenue vehicle, and thus, it may perish naturally. we won’t pull support from it. we won’t force people to move off of projects surrounding it. but we will do the bare minimum moving forward to maintain it’s existence and one day, when no one else wants to take responsibility for the decaying infrastructure and literally endless backlog of defects and code rewrites, the website will sunset.

Anarchywoofwoof on Tumblr

If you are skeptical about this news, then just ignore this whole post, as it will not be relevant towards your life.

However, if this wild information is indeed true, then Tumblr fans need to consider relevant options sooner rather than later—preferably tech solutions that have embraced the Fediverse.

A few examples include exporting your Tumblr blog to WordPress, to Micro Blog, or (if possible) to Friendi.ca (the latter might be more suitable for the tech crowd).

Hopefully, this rumor is not true (note: your’s truly is skeptical), as Tumblr is one of the few “fun” blogging platforms that has indirectly affected many of the social networks we love & use today.

Tumblr To Fediverse: The Rent Is Too Damn High!

A long time ago, in a pre-COVID place not so far away, there was a politician from the streets who ran on a platform to lower rental prices in New York.

Image via: TMZ

He complained that his constituents could not afford housing because the rent was “too damn high!”

While the video above is hilarious, it mirrors a current problem within the Tumblrverse.

Several months ago, Automattic CEO Matt Mullegnweg revealed that Tumblr struggles to generate meaningful revenue despite its loyal fan base.

According to Mullenweg, Tumblr is spending about $30 million more than it makes each year. This isn’t too surprising, given Tumblr’s history as a company. Founded in 2007, the blogging site was acquired by Yahoo (TechCrunch’s parent company) for $1 billion in 2013. But by 2019, WordPress.com parent Automattic bought Tumblr for just $3 million. Though it has a loyal base of power users, Tumblr has also struggled to grow its daily active users since its infamous porn ban.

(Via TechCrunch)

So what does Tumblr’s financial woes have to do with its promised future of federation‽ Well, allegedly, the cost of embracing the Fediverse might make activating ActivityPub a pain in the arse!

According to a screenshot by @_jv_ (the former worked at Tumblr), an answer to a question submitted to a current Tumblr engineer may hint at why we might not see Tumblr enter the Fediverse anytime soon due to the “cost of admission.”

serious question, obviously you’re not the best person to talk about mastodon to but like. you reblogging someone that acknowledged that @photomatt said tumblr would implement activitypub; this is closest thing to an official acknowledgement of tumblr activitypub integration on Tumblr. Matt announced it impromptu in a single tweet and never talked about it again. I just assumed it’s been canned now, or at least, significantly delayed, is there a reason activitypub integration was never properly announced
on tumblr?

From @oct2pus (they confirmed asking this question)

it’s been delayed, but it’s something in our list for
@labs and we’re evaluating it. my concern, re: activitypub, is that while federation is a really great idea, it’s never had a good product. it doesn’t really fulfill a widespread need, it’s very niche. nobody is joining threads or bluesky because it will federate someday. so i don’t think it would help grow tumblr at all. actually i think it would likely end up costing more than it makes, which is a
concern.

but stay tuned!

From Cyle on Tumblr
Image
Screenshot of user asking Tumblr Engineer about ActivityPub Activation

Later on, Javi (who worked at Tumblr) confirmed that ActivityPub is (more or less) on the back burner for financial reasons.

i know, I was working for tumblr when the Twitter thing happened and we scrambled to put together a project. I was the one supposed to do all the web UI work.
Once my backend counterpart did some initial investigation and scoping, and it became obvious it was a complex task and that it would become a cost center without any chance to generate any cashflow, the project was quietly put on long-term hold.

From Javi A.

Note: There were a few more relevant & recent posts on Mastodon, but they will not be displayed here to avoid bruising egos.

Although freely embracing ActivityPub would be ideal, Tumblr should not integrate the technology at the expense of the site itself (after all, they also have bills to pay).

There is no shame in declaring that the Federation is too expensive. Other platforms (Medium, Facebook & Instagram) are also forgoing embracing the Fediverse (probably for similar reasons), & Tumblr’s worth will not decline because they made a fiscally sound decision.

However, if Tumblr still wants to enter the Fediverse, there are a few alternative options available, ranging from “geeky free” to “pay to play.”

The WordPress Workaround

After releasing an updated ActivityPub plugin to the WordPress world, @mattwiebe.blog revealed on X (formally Twitter) that WordPress.com users would be able to join the Fediverse without needing to upgrade to a business plan (the latter which allows plugins).

ActivityPub 1.0.0 for #WordPress is released today! Activate and your WP blog can now be followed in the fediverse, and receive replies back as comments. Huge props to

@pfefferle and all of our contributors!

From Matt Wiebe on X

any changes since this? https://techcrunch.com/2023/03/13/wordpress-com-owner-automattic-acquires-an-activitypub-plugin-so-blogs-can-join-the-fediverse/ how soon for dot com?

Image
From Sarah Perez on X

Here’s our changelog! The main points are the blog-wide account (before it was only per-author), and the two new Blocks, but tons of bug fixes, a security audit, and compatibility with various networks too. Dotcom is coming very soon!

Image
From Matt Wiebe on X

Tumblr users could create a WordPress Workaround by having content created on Tumblr be automatically (pun not intended) copied upon an inexpensive or free WordPress account that is already a part of the Fediverse.

Another option is for WordPress users to utilize the power of IFTTT (If This, Then That) to copy their posts upon their shiny dot com WordPress sites.

Those with custom domains can have their WordPress blog operate as a subdomain from their Tumblr blog & connect to the Fediverse that way.

Paying The Tumblr Toll

A better option would be for Tumblr to charge a monthly fee (say $5 per month) to activate ActivityPub on their Tumblr blog. As a bonus, paying members would receive an icon declaring their blog is open to the Fediverse, as well as premium support when dealing with spam.

Automattic could also make Fediverse activation an exclusive feature for Tumblr users with custom domains, which would help lessen the appeal for spammers (plus prevent Tumblr’s domain from being blocked due to spam).

What Should Tumblr Do‽

Regardless of Tumblr’s decision, yours truly will continue to use the platform. Hopefully, Tumblr figures out an inexpensive way to activate ActivityPub as the community is one of the few who would fit in perfectly within the Fediverse.

Will Tumblr’s Dominion Over The Fediverse Be Automattic‽

If the Socialverse (social networks online) were the Star Trek universe, then the Fediverse would be The Federation: a union of multiple applications founded on the principles of liberty, equality, peace, justice & progress (ok, so maybe your’s truly borrowed some text from Star Trek).

Image Credit: From Star Trek, Deep Space Nine (image discovered via Memory Alpha)

What unites the Fediverse is the ability of different applications with different purposes, codes, philosophies, creators & business models to communicate using the ActivityPub protocol.

However, an ancient force in the Socialverse has appeared out of the WordPress Wormhole. This shape-shifting service can mimic many ActivityPub applications while serving a slice of ads on the side.

Known by friends, frenemies & foes as Tumblr, this recently acquired platform from Automattic can morph into:

Tumblr’s sheer size alone would dwarf the Fediverse, as the social blogging site boasts over 560 million blogs & 135 million monthly active users. Mastodon (currently the most prominent app in the Fediverse) has recently surpassed eight million accounts, of which approximately two million are active at least once a month.

Image
From Tumblr Press

While Tumblr’s entrance into the Fediverse should be celebrated, its mere presence could result in Automattic dominating the Fediverse & potentially dictating the future direction of ActivityPub apps overall.

So how can current Fediverse apps compete when (not if) Tumblr enters their realm‽ By embracing their unique strengths & mimicking the tactics of rival platforms.

KISS: Keep Instance Signups Simple (AKA Easy)

Whether it’s Mastodon, Pixelfed, Pleroma, Misskey, Peertube, etcetera, many Fediverse apps are confusing newcomers (who are used to centralized social networks) by offering a decentralized sign-up process (basically asking people to choose a server).

Instead of offering a read the fraking manual response or sign-up guides for non-techies, Fediverse apps should drastically simplify the process by only offering two options:

  • Login or sign up with Fediverse.Yeah
  • Enter your existing server or domain

This would simplify the sign-up process for new people eager to leave centralized systems. Pixelfed is an excellent example of keeping sign-ups easy & straightforward.

Image
Pixelfed Icon

To prevent servers from overloading with too many people, Federated apps could randomly rotate between a selection of servers (with permission from the respective server admins) as the first sign-up option with one caveat: The server must have the app name in the domain.

Requiring the full name of the software service in the domain will reduce confusion for newcomers, who might question why they are signing up for a site called Pxlmo.com (even though it is a Pixelfed server) & ditch the signup process altogether.

For example, if a person were signing up for Pixelfed, the first sign-up option would randomly rotate between:

Fediverse apps could also (via web or mobile app) detect the geolocation of the person signing up & offer a local option for users as the main signup option. A few examples would be:

As more people signup, Fediverse apps could begin referring to other servers without the name, but they should include a brief explanation in parentheses. Example: sign up to Pixey.org (a Pixelfed server).

Build An App For That

For better or worse, Apple’s App Store & Google Play will be the primary ways many people discover a Fediverse app. While having third party apps help, many people will be confused or skeptical without seeing an official app, something Twitter discovered years ago.

People everywhere should be able to access Twitter without friction or confusion. Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes AppStore revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter, and they’re not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It’s important that we optimize for user benefit and create an awesome experience.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, a leading iPhone Twitter client. Tweetie will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and made free (currently $2.99) in the iTunes AppStore in the coming weeks. Loren will become a key member of our mobile team that is already having huge impact with device makers and service providers around the world. Loren’s work won the 2009 Apple Design Award and we will eventually launch Twitter for iPad with his help.

Official Twitter Blog

As many (if not most) people access their social networks via a mobile device, having an official app on Android & iOS can determine the difference between mass adoption & obscurity.

Having an official presence on Android, iOS & iPadOS is probably one of the reasons Mastodon is starting to gain popularity amongst the masses (compared to similar rivals), & Fediverse apps would be wise to adopt a similar strategy soon.

Taking Care Of Business

Unlike sites like Tumblr, most Fediverse creators behind Mastodon, Pixelfed, Funkwhale, Peertube, etcetera, do not have millions or billions of dollars, euros, etcetera at their disposal.

Although receiving donations from the Fediverse community is excellent, Fediverse creators should consider establishing freemium business models to compete against better-funded, centralized & decentralized rivals.

For example, Automattic (who owns Tumblr) heavily contributes towards WordPress, but they run their hosting service at WordPress.com (which helps further the development of WordPress overall).

Finding funding for Fediverse projects can come in a variety of flavors, & here are a few examples below:

  • Mastodon has a sponsorship page which many companies & individuals pay (note: yours truly is listed there) to have their name mentioned (this contributes towards further development)
  • The creator of WriteFreely runs a hosting service called Write.as which people can freely sign up upon but also pay for extra features. They also offer a premium app upon the App Store.
  • The creator of BookWyrm also offers managed hosting services (provided you are not a corporation).

While some Fediverse apps have found success primarily via donations (Framasoft, who develops Peertube, is a great example), creators—& even instance admins—should find a stable way to secure the necessary finances to compete against future rivals.

Future Frenemies To Battle With‽

Tumblr’s entrance into the Fediverse will increase the Fediverse Familia’s size. Still, the more significant interactions between apps and users will also increase the costs of maintaining servers & software applications.

It would not be surprising if Automattic fully integrates ActivityPub into other projects such as:

Other players like Flickr are pondering joining the Fediverse, which could inspire numerous companies to enter in the not-so-distant future (note: do not rule out Twitter joining as well).

To avoid a significant player or players entering the Fediverse, assimilating the ActvitityPub protocol & locking out long-time Fediverse applications, the Fediverse Familia needs to forge a bulwark against potential corporate bullies to avoid the fate of becoming legacy apps.
