Working on data portals and data infrastructure since 2010, Joel and Sami began their collaborative journey even earlier – deploying best-of-breed, open-source solutions since 2000 at Fortune 100 companies worldwide.

Shortly after winning NYCBigApps for the second time in 2012, they recognized the transformative potential of making data truly accessible and decided to apply themselves full-time.
CKAN Pioneers in the Americas
In 2011, they founded Ontodia, becoming the first CKAN professional services partner in the Americas. Their groundbreaking work included:
- Deploying data portals across major municipalities: Jersey City, Newark, Allegheny County, PA,
Boston, San Antonio, NYC Department of Education - International projects with UNDP and other global organizations
- Launching CivicDashboards at Code for America 2015
- Acquisition by OpenGov in 2016, validating their innovative approach

Since then, they’ve helped deploy data portals at ~50 agencies across different levels of government throughout the US, while actively contributing to and sponsoring core CKAN development and staying deeply engaged in the open-source community.
