This afternoon while we driving, Lucca asked me what a Jedi is, so we had a discussion about what the Force is.*
And later:
Lucca: Mama, some day I want to buy you some jewelry.
Me: wow, that would be nice, thank you! What made you think of that?
Lucca: Well, Papa told me that if you want to impress a girl, you buy her jewelry.
The force is strong with this one.
*he has not seen Star Wars, btw.

Ambulatory
Soren has been taking steps independently for the past week or so, and yesterday he walked across the room!
He's really excited about it and pretty delighted with himself. As am I.
(please excuse the disastrous condition of my living room. I have no excuse, this is just how we live.)

assisted walker
Soren is all about assisted walking these days. I can't believe he's almost 11 months old!
rider
Lucca recently conquered the pedal-bike-with-no-training-wheels! He went through some frustration, but on Tuesday we went to the park and he got some good practice in without friends there to compete with/be distracted by. He's so proud of himself! but not as proud as his mama...

The most perfect Brachiosaurus
This afternoon Lucca announced that he wanted to draw a brachiosaurus for me. He had me pick a color then started.

This is the belly, with food inside. He stopped and got upset because it "wasn't good" (because he went outside the outline) and after fussing about it a bit he started over.

Again, he stopped and got upset, saying he wanted it to be "perfect." We talked about it, and I told him that nobody can draw a perfect brachiosaurus, because nobody's perfect. He decided that he wanted to start over again.

This time after drawing the belly outline, he brightly told me that wasn't going to draw the food. Ah, problem solved! He then drew the neck and head and one eye, but then things went south again because there wasn't room for the other eye, and he wanted them to be the same size. Again I offered some suggestions, but he wanted to start again. This time he told me not to look while he drew it.

And there it is! He proudly explained it to me, and pointed out the tree on the right for eating.
I think it's perfect.

What's not to like?
The other day-
Lucca: do you like shiny things?
Me: yes, I do like shiny things.
Lucca: I *really* like shiny things.

not because they're mythical. or green. or Irish.
Lucca: I'm interested in (ticking off on fingers): dinosaurs, fossils, crystals, sparkly stones, and gold. and trains.
I listed them back to him and forgot gold, and he reminded me, "and gold!"
Me: maybe you're part leprechaun.
L: what?
Me: maybe you're part leprechaun.
L: (laughing) no, mama! that's silly. leprechauns are so small!
(and also? "sparkly stones"? are you kidding me? that's cute.)

Answer: Yes.

Birthday party animal
Today we attended Lucca's BFF Ollie's 4th birthday party! Here is Lucca making a card for him this morning:

And a few of Lucca and Soren In their party finery:

At another party we went to yesterday, Lucca encountered his first (child-sized) drum kit:

As awesome as this was, the experience convinced me that we don't need one of these in our house.
Some unrelated pics of Soren the other day at the park:

And Ollie and Lucca:

Buddies.

Lucca-isms
The other day in the car, in reference to his fingernail:
"Mama, my nail is as sharp as a mosquito proboscis!"
And today, on the couch:
"Mama, it's good to watch TV when you're sick, because it means you don't have to do."
This is the second day of high fever for the poor little guy.

St. Patrick's Day
Here are my little guys:

And here is a leprechaun house/trap that Lucca made this afternoon.

He put some gold in there to lure them in, the shell is to "make them want to live there," and the clay balls are leprechaun eggs, because apparently leprechauns hatch from eggs. Bet you didn't know that, did you.

Fairy House
Friday afternoon Lucca and I made a fairy house in our back yard.

The roof is made of nasturtium leaves and flowers, held up by a dried weed taken from the "herbivore snacks" (a pile of weeds he and Carlo pulled a while back. As many things are these days, the task was filtered through a dinosaur lens.) The dried banana leaves on the sides are curtains. We put some fancy shells and stuff in there for the fairies, and some thyme, mint, clover, a collard leaf and a fava bean leaf for them to eat.

The fluffy seed down on the shell is their bed.
Lucca was so excited and when Carlo got home he hustled him outside to show it to him.

The next morning Lucca reported that there was a bite taken out of the collard leaf, so maybe a fairy used our house...
