About the Project

🌊 Inspiration

Plastic and chemical pollution are devastating marine ecosystems, yet awareness remains low. We wanted to create an engaging and fun way to educate people—especially younger audiences—about the impact of pollution on sea life. Inspired by Pokémon and other collectible games, we gamified the learning experience to make it interactive and rewarding.

🎮 What It Does

AquaQuest is a web-based game where players engage in mini-games that highlight the effects of pollution on the ocean. Winning a game rewards players with endangered sea creatures, which they can collect and showcase to friends. Each creature comes with real-world facts about its struggles against pollution, reinforcing environmental awareness in an engaging way.

🛠️ How We Built It

  • Frontend: Built with React for a smooth and dynamic user experience.
  • Backend: Developed with Express and SupaBase to manage game data and user progress.
  • Game Mechanics: Designed simple but meaningful mini-games that reflect real pollution challenges, using JavaScript and React.
  • AI & Chatbot: Implemented a chatbot (powered by OpenAI) to provide educational insights and guide players through the experience.
  • Design: We created vibrant visuals and animations to make the game fun and immersive.

🚧 Challenges We Ran Into

  • Balancing Education & Fun: Making the mini-games engaging while keeping the message clear.
  • Time Constraints: Implementing multiple mini-games in a short time.
  • Game Progression: Designing a rewarding system that keeps players motivated.

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Successfully built a functional and visually appealing prototype within the hackathon timeframe.
  • Created a unique way to educate users about sea pollution through interactive gameplay.
  • Designed collectible endangered sea creatures that players can learn about and share with friends.
  • Integrated a chatbot to enhance the educational aspect of the project.

📚 What We Learned

  • How to gamify serious topics to drive awareness.
  • Improved our skills in frontend and backend development, especially with React and SupaBase.
  • The importance of user engagement in educational tools.
  • How to work effectively as a team under time pressure.

🔮 What's Next for AquaQuest

  • Expanding the game with more mini-games covering different pollution types.
  • Adding multiplayer features to encourage collaboration.
  • Enhancing the AI chatbot to provide deeper insights on pollution solutions.
  • Partnering with environmental organizations to bring AquaQuest to classrooms and awareness campaigns.

Together, we can make learning about ocean conservation fun and impactful! 🌍🐠
