Inspiration
Access to reliable healthcare guidance is still a challenge for many people, especially in rural and underdeveloped areas. Minor symptoms often go ignored or misunderstood, while hospital visits can be expensive and time-consuming. We were inspired to build MediWise to bridge this gap by using AI to provide quick, trustworthy, and personalized health guidance, empowering users to take informed first steps toward better health.
What it does
MediWise is an AI-powered healthcare assistant that helps users understand their symptoms and receive personalized recommendations. It suggests possible precautions, diet plans, yoga, and exercise based on user input. The platform also helps users find nearby doctors and encourages preventive care rather than delayed treatment, making healthcare more accessible and proactive.
How we built it
We built MediWise using a Flask backend and a clean, responsive HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frontend. The AI logic processes user symptoms and provides relevant health suggestions using rule-based logic combined with machine learning and NLP techniques. We integrated external map services to enable the “Find Nearby Doctors” feature and focused on modular design so the system can be easily scaled and enhanced in the future.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was ensuring that the health suggestions were safe, responsible, and easy to understand without replacing professional medical advice. Integrating different components—AI logic, frontend UI, and backend APIs—was also technically demanding. Handling user inputs accurately and presenting recommendations in a clear, non-overwhelming way required multiple iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a functional, end-to-end AI healthcare assistant within limited time. MediWise successfully combines symptom checking, personalized lifestyle recommendations, and doctor discovery in one platform. The intuitive UI and structured recommendations make it usable even for non-technical users, which was one of our core goals.
What we learned
Through MediWise, we learned how to design AI systems for sensitive domains like healthcare with responsibility and ethics in mind. We gained hands-on experience in full-stack development, AI integration, and user-centric design. Most importantly, we learned how technology can create real social impact when built with empathy.
What's next for MediWise
Next, we plan to integrate advanced ML models for more accurate symptom analysis, add multilingual support for wider accessibility, and enable real-time health monitoring using wearable data. We also aim to partner with healthcare professionals to validate recommendations and expand MediWise into a more comprehensive digital health ecosystem.
