Inspiration
"An Absolutely Remarkable Thing" by Hank Greens. A fascinating story about how all humans were placed in one dream and when awoken have recalled that dream. It's fascinating world when humans can experience the same experience as others. Reframe brings us closer to a joint experience.
Imagine instead of sharing a photo you share a location and a Frame of the photo (view) at that location. The person can appreciate it much more as they are truly experiencing the photo you had in mind--a visceral experience.
Some of the use cases include:
- People who appreciate full visual experiences of a place
- Photographers/artists looking to learn from how people "Frame" the world
- Photographers looking to inspire others (to learn how) to frame things
- Tourists who may find insights of photogenic locations
- For creatives/artists to save a location in an expressive and creative way
What it does
Reframe is about sharing your unique perspective and exploring the world in new ways. As users move through and observe the world they are able to share their "Wow" moments and special places by creating augmented reality Frames. The frames create a window of focus around something, large or small, allowing others to see and experience the world as they did, at the same spot. By creating AR objects anchored to a location, others can view the frame placed at that location.
How we built it
Adobe Aero. Blender. Figma
We created the Frames (objects) using Blender and designed it for higher contrast given different lighting conditions. We then imported objects and used adobe aero to anchor them at locations. We ran all sorts of tests and changed configurations to avoid "AR drift at the location."
P.S. We have a Unity version coming soon.
Challenges we ran into
AR drift. Even after anchoring to a specific location the Frames would move with the camera. We tried different locations and differing conditions. What ended up working was setting anchor to horizontal at first then switching to location--somehow did the trick.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to be pushing boundaries of the norm (sharing experiences > comparing photos) into a more grounded experience
Building the app within an unfamiliar space and learning so much about AR
Add to the above the short timeframe we found ourselves in (5 days) for personal reasons
AR is so cool!
What we learned
AR experience is immersive. We had to make vital design decisions in order not to endanger our users
The AR space still has a long way to go but is still impressively functional
Places can feel more significant when we can focus on them and also when we share them with others
The importance of clean UI & separating action space from visual especially with AR How tricky AR interactions can be (interacting with AR objects intuitively is hard without using words)
What's next for Reframe
Allow user to choose Frame style (an art in of itself)
Comments or some form of controlled feedback (only positive)--feeling appreciated
Ability to add descriptions (think museums)
