Inspiration
People often choose routes based on speed alone — not safety. Many navigation tools ignore lighting, isolation, or risk zones. With Safe Route AI, we make safety part of route planning.
What it does
Safe Route AI scores walking and driving routes based on real-time and environmental risk factors. It highlights risky segments, explains why a route is unsafe, and suggests safer alternatives. It also offers safety tips and quick access to emergency contacts.
How we built it
Frontend: React + Mapbox Backend: Node.js + Express + MongoDB Raindrop : Used to inform on the safety tips
Challenges
Merging accurate map data with safety logic, keeping explanations simple and clear, and making route safety meaningful without overpromising protection.
Our wins
We built a full map-based route safety tool. It delivers safety scores fast, shows clear route explanations, and delivers a smooth user experience all on a tight timeline.
What we learned
Safety-focused navigation needs balance. Too much detail overwhelms users. Clarity, simplicity, and transparency matter. Combining mapping, AI scoring, and good UI works when done thoughtfully.
Next steps
We want to plug in better data sources, enable community reporting of unsafe zones, expand to more cities, and refine scoring rules to make Safe Route AI smarter and more reliable.
