Inspiration

Over the course of our lives, we have trained for (and failed) many coding interviews. One resource we always come back to is YouTube, with its plethora of engaging content. However, we've found that these videos become a chore to skim through when we are revising. This is where Safe Transcribe comes in.

What it does

Conveniently located within a Chrome extension and built upon the reliable AssemblyAI service, Safe Transcribe allows you to transcribe and download the text of a YouTube video, all at the click of a button!

How we built it

We built the front-end on a Chrome extension in order to provide convenience for our users. For the backend, we used an Express server which calls the AssemblyAI service for video transcriptions.

Challenges we ran into

We quickly found ourselves in trouble as all the technology we used was new to us. Neither of us had used AssemblyAI or made a Chrome extension before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the countless hours we spent sifting through documentation in order to finally create a working product. While the final product may look simple, it is a testament to our hard work over these past two days.

What we learned

We have gained competencies in developing Chrome extensions and using the AssemblyAI service, on top of building on our pre-existing Javascript foundations. We have also learned the importance of googling the correct answers, as we found that most answers online were either outdated or irrelevant to our problems at hand.

What's next for safeTranscribe

We are excited about what Safe Transcribe has to offer. Having created a simple proof-of-concept product, there is so much more than can be done. Video transcriptions are not only useful for users wishing to "skim" videos, but also for the hearing-impaired, who can refer to these transcriptions in real time. We also see potential in the application of content warnings for topics that may be distressing for some users, such that we can warn them in advance of watching these videos.
