Inspiration
We were inspired by games like Fall Guys, Temple Run, and Mario Kart Racing while real life events like American Ninja Warrior also inspired our game design.
What it does
Players are dropped into a foot race where they compete amongst each other for the number 1 spot in a Steampunk themed platform environment.
How we built it
We took advantage of our many resources provided by the Meta Horizon Creator Program to bring our vision to life! From tutorials to mentorship, workshop, and watercooler discussions, we managed to bring together something we're incredibly proud of.
Challenges we ran into
Our team had difficulty transitioning from code blocks to typescript and from basic UI to custom UI but were able to find solutions because of the great documentation and resources available to us. We had to learn about optimization of imported models and how to build for PC, Mobile, and VR. Quite the challenge!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're so proud of the entire project but we're looking forward to taking what we've built and applying it to many more worlds! We have a ton of future ideas and ways to engage players for longer and more consistently.
What we learned
We could write a book! It's been such an amazing challenge, like a huge puzzle! We've learned to import our own custom models, how to track player data, how to store player data, how to implement in world purchases, how to utilize the AI in the editor to create helpful code snippets and fun sounds. We've learned how game design can affect how players interact with worlds and the differences between VR players and mobile players interests and desires.
What's next for Steampunk
We're going to continue building ways to sabotage other racers, play multiple rounds with varying obstacles, reward returning players and building more themed levels like underwater worlds and space asteroids! We'd like to incorporate ways for spectators to troll racers while making winners feel even more special. And keep working on performance optimization.
