Problem & Inspiration
Statsitic from Pew Center: From a survey conducted in early 2021, 23% of American Adults say they haven't read a book within the past year --> This is a major problem we identified!
The question is, how do we solve it? **We figured that for the average people, and for us personally, we are only passionate when we see other people who are also passionate about the things they do. Thus, to encourage reading books, we need to create a creative way for book lovers to connect with non-book lovers.
The app has the following priorities and functions: 1. Connect users together & facilitate their conversation 2. Encourage users to discover a new genre of book 3. Create a beautiful book collection for users to encourage reading 4. Ensure user privacy by not forcing them to use their real name
How we built it
We use React-Native as backend and frontend, use Firebase as the database to store the user login information in order to make a match between users. Moreover, I also use Firebase to store the matches between the users when they chat with each other
Challenges we ran into
There are many packages such as react-native-deck-swiper has their own errors, and it takes me a lot of hours to find the errors about dependencies and correct the syntax and use the correct dependencies. On the Figma side, understanding how to create a seamless experience for the user is not as easy as we thought it is.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We actually are able to make the chat system, the authentication system Signing in with Google accounts, and especially able to make the matching system between two users. On the teamwork side, we were able to bring some mock UI design into real life and be able to compromise on what sort of feature we should bring.
What we learned
We have learned about how to deal with the dependencies, how to make the syntax for code more correctly, and how to use React Native Efficiently
What's next for Text & Book
We think that being able to make the backend correlate with the MockUI we created for Text&Book is our biggest priority because making sure things won't break is very important for the user experience.
