Inspiration

We were inspired to create this idea by realizing that the big issue is how to make issues about infrastructure, disaster relief and safety more accessible to be viewed and contemplated on by both citizens and the municipal government.

What it does

welivehere creates an overlay of Calgary split by neighborhood and puts down pins to represent incidents that have occurred at that location. Normal users can view and then be informed about issues with that particular area, and municipal administrators can take action to solve these issues, similar to a ticket system.

Users can use AI to immediately process a picture of the incident and generate a basic report that can then be modified to add more detail.

How we built it

It was built on React for frontend, Flask and Python for backend, and MongoDB for database. We also had 3 APIs, being MapBox, a Weather API and an Air Quality API (both Meersens)

Challenges we ran into

Unfortunately, my group decided to exit out of the competition around the 6:00am mark, so I endeavored to complete the project on my own. We had large issues with how to process the image while being able to display it on the frontend as well, which we never fully figured out. The concept of this idea was also quite abstract after a while, so it was quite tough to continue designing rigorously.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of being able to convert this application to a semi-usable state in the end, and hope this hackathon isn't the end of its journey.

What we learned

I learned bucketloads about Python and Flask, as I am actually a MERN stack developer. I also improved my concept creation skills by creating many abstracted frontend and backend concepts, as well as needing to consider which end should process what information.

What's next for welivehere

Perhaps it will live beyond this hackathon...
