"The Symbol of the Faith must be preserved inviolate, as at its origin. Since all the holy doctors of the Church, all the Councils and all the Scriptures put us on our guard against heterodoxy, how dare I, in spite of these authorities, follow those who urge us to unity in a deceitful semblance of union—those who have corrupted the holy and divine Symbol of Faith and brought in the Son as second cause of the Holy Spirit" - St. Mark of Ephesus - The Pillar of Orthodoxy

WHAT IS THE FILIOQUE?

The term filioque is Latin for “and from the son”. To support a particular set of philosophical principles, the Western (Roman Catholic) Church inserted this word/idea into the previously ecumenical Creed of the Holy Apostles – the Symbole of the Faith. In short, the interpolation altered the theology (doctrine of God), “previously held by all Christians everywhere at all times”, attempting to define God according to a philosophical analogy.

To their credit, and veneration, more than one Pope refused to accept this, with Pope Leo III going so far as to engrave the true Creed of the Holy Apostles onto silver plates and mount them on St. Peter’s in Rome.
