Last week’s mix ended with the lovely sing-a-long You Got It by Roy Orbison. And that got me thinking about putting together a themed mix.
But about what? I hear you ask. Pop stars who wear sunglasses all the time? Well, no, because that would mean I’d have to feature Bono, and we don’t want that happening, now do we?
Then how about acts whose names have inspired other musical acts? Joy Orbison, for example. But I couldn’t think of any others (suggestions welcome), so I’ve put that on the back burner for now.
Instead, I was reminded that You Got It had appeared in a TV advert sometime recently, and that’s the sort of thing which really annoys me. Long-term readers may remember that I used to write a series called S.S.O.S (Stop Stealing Our Songs) where I moaned about artists selling out and taking the corporate dollar by allowing their records to be used in such a way, even though it probably wasn’t down to them anyway.
Since I’ve gone and got myself a “smart” TV, I end up sitting through the adverts that I can no longer fast forward or skip past, and blimey there’s loads of them these days.
Not all adverts infuriate me, mind; some make me laugh, if not for the right reason. That one where a popular brand of mayonnaise tried to cash in on Euro 2024 by booking Jack Grealish to appear in their ad, filmed it, and then he didn’t get picked for the England Team, so he was just some bloke sticking his head over the fence at a neighbour’s barbecue. Always raises a smug smile, that one.
But some absolutely boil my piss. Does nobody in Adland know what Enola Gay is about??
Anyway, it turns out that when lovingly compiled by yours truly, they make a pretty decent hour long mix (it could’ve been much, much longer…) so, without naming a single company exploiting our musical heroes, and not including any of the dodgy cover versions or ones where the words have been changed to include the brand name, I figured we’d set about reclaiming these songs again.
