Shoveling new snow
Tiring not from the weight but
The repetition
Shoveling again
Nature is too generous
With the white stuff
Hopping on the snow
Under the empty feeder
A chickadee waits
Was that a trumpet?
Or perhaps an angry moose?
I just blew my nose
Braving bitter cold
I rush to warm up my car
The snow complaining
In barren branches
Blackbird puffed-up and huddled
Without any friends
This foggy morning
Like snow evaporating
Into the cool air
The full moon hung low
Causing the rooftops to glow
I let my dog out
Nine out of ten cars
Who pull out in front of you
Will also drive slow
Peach and pink morning
Cheerful skies belying the
Coldness of winter
Thin grey clouds racing
Across the full moon’s bright face
I call in my dog
Dark tree silhouettes
Counter pastel morning skies
Beauty in contrast
My bed is so warm
Morning alarm unwelcome
The world is so cold
Lingering daylight
Cold night shrinks a little more
As spring approaches
Hazy lemon sun
Straining to break free of clouds
Snow protests my steps
Snow-covered branches
Midday sun slowly warming
Random snap-crashes
Brush snow off the cars
Shovel driveway and sidewalk
Dog under blankets
Warm under covers
Ice rainbow in my window
I need a snow day
Southbound 6 p.m.
Winter sun fades on my right
Dark creeps on my left
January’s end
Records for snowfall and cold
Thanks, Polar Vortex!
Peek out at my car
No accumulation there
Lying weatherman
Whiteness comprised of
Individual snowflakes
Each lost in the crowd
Church bells are ringing
Prayers from the congregation
As angels take wing
Soaring overhead
Hovering and motionless
Can’t you see me fly?
Horizon’s brightness
Pale yellows meet with bright blues
Tinting day’s last gray
My back is still sore
From yesterday’s shoveling
Hard work now buried
