Paris plane crash spurs cultural growth in Atlanta – Yahoo! News
ATLANTA (AP) — Fifty years ago, a group of 106 influential cultural and civic leaders from Atlanta traveled to Europe to visit famous museums and demonstrate the ascendant southern city’s commitment to culture.
The Atlanta area’s population in 1962 had recently hit a million people, but political and business leaders worried the growth wouldn’t continue if the city didn’t improve its museums and venues for theater and music. The city’s cultural development would be altered forever by the trip, but in ways that had to do more with its tragic end.
The group was on its way home June 3 when its chartered Air France plane crashed on takeoff at Orly Field in Paris, killing all but two flight attendants. It had been the worst single plane crash to date.
“The community was just in shock,” said Joe Bankoff, outgoing president and CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta. “I mean, to lose over 100 people in a moment was just unbelievable. But to lose such a cross section of Atlanta was particularly important.”
On the flight were artists, company leaders, the first woman elected to the city’s school board and other leaders. Among the sites on their packed agenda were the Louvre in Paris, the Coliseum in Rome and London Bridge.
Out of the city’s grief grew a sense that something needed to be done to memorialize them, to improve on its tiny art museum in an old house and struggling art school.
“These people were heads of companies in Atlanta. They were the wives who did a lot of the volunteer work at the art association,” said Susan Lowance, who had traveled with the group but had decided to stay in Europe longer to visit friends.
She believes the development of the arts center is a fitting tribute to her friends.
“These were people who had a stake in what was going to happen, and what happened was wonderful,” Lowance said.
Atlanta is now home to a world-class art museum that has collaborated with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre, a Grammy-winning symphony orchestra and other top-notch cultural institutions.

Delta: Flight diverted to Fla. for ‘unruly’ couple – Yahoo! News
ATLANTA AP — Officials say a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Costa Rica was diverted to Tampa, Fla., on Sunday evening after a couple from Germany became unruly.
Delta spokeswoman Chris Kelly Singley said Flight 414 departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 6 p.m. Sunday and landed at Tampa International Airport at 7:34 p.m. The captain made the call to land, the spokeswoman said. After the “unruly” passengers were removed, the plane went on to Costa Rica, she said.
Tampa International Airport spokeswoman Janet Zink identified the passengers as Peter and Gabriele Strohmaier of Dusseldorf, Germany. She said they were seated in first class and demanding food and champagne and refused to sit down.
Zink said no charges had been filled. The FBI and Transportation Security Administration were investigating.

Smule snags Songify app creator – USATODAY.com

Ge Wang wants everyone to play music, even if they don’t know how.
With top virtual instrument app hits like Magic Piano, Ocarina and Leaf Trombone, Wang’s Smule has sold nearly 20 million app downloads, and attracted top investment. Shasta Ventures recently raised $12 million for a second round of financing, closing in October.
With the new funds, Smule just made its first acquisition. Atlanta based Kh.ush, which also makes musical apps like Songify and La Di Da. No terms were disclosed, but Kh.ush will remain in Georgia.
“Our goal is to really grow and keep pace but stay in front of the emerging music making business,” says Wang, Smule’s co-founder.
While Smule’s expertise is with virtual instruments like the piano, trombone, flute and violin, Kh.ush is adapting speech to music. The Songify app lets you recite spoken words into the iPhone, and then turns it into a song.

The revelation that more than 80 Atlanta teachers admitted to cheating on state standardized tests–with one group of elementary teachers even holding a “party” after school to change their pupils’ answers by hand–has rocked the education reform movement.But one question has been left unanswered: Why would a teacher resort to cheating in the first place? The Notebook blog has found a Philadelphia teacher willing to explain why she helped her 11th-grade English students cheat on the state’s standardized tests. The blog earlier broke the story that Pennsylvania officials suspected cheating may have occurred in 60 state schools. The teacher, who remains anonymous in the story, says she began to help her students cheat because she worried their self-esteem was crushed by taking tests they were in no way academically prepared for. If a student asked a question during one of the eight yearly testing periods, she would help him or her find the right answer, or occasionally just point to it on the exam. “I never went to any student who didn’t call me to help them cheat,” said the teacher. “But if somebody asked me a question, I wasn’t willing to say, ‘Just do your best.’ They were my students, and I wanted to be there for them.”
