Emily Turns Five

Today was a pretty big milestone in the life of our family: Our baby girl turned five years old. We are still finding it a little hard to believe that she could be that old, but the proof is right in front of us.
Here she is on her actual birth day....
Image...and at about ten months old (always smiling!)....Image...and today, getting ready for her 5th birthday party, looking all grown up.ImageThe weather was warm and beautiful (48 degrees!), so we decided that the party should start off with some front yard sledding.
Image
We even set up some seats for the spectators!
ImageAnd of course what would a party be without some cold beverages nearby?
Image
Em's cousins came to her party, of course, and we got to watch Lili master "snowboarding" on a sled...way to go Lili!
Image
Sebastian did his usual kamikaze moves...
Image
...and Mom even got out her "trick" skis and attempted some jumps.
Image
Yes, that's a Spread Eagle attempt below (followed immediately by a faceplant).
ImageEm's buddy Duncan from preschool joined us....Image...along with her BFF Cole, who is always a good time.ImageEveryone had a great time sledding--even Connor got into the action a little bit.ImageOf course not everyone hit the hill...some of our guests were quite content to have a cold beverage and socialize.

Image
We were so happy that Millie was able to come to the party too--it was really great to see her.
ImageEventually the sledding started winding down, and the snowball fighting picked up a little.ImageNow that's a fun time.ImageEmily knew that her birthday cake was inside waiting for her, so she started getting pretty antsy...it was time to move the party indoors....
Image
...where Kate and Millie had already staked out their spots.
Image
When Emily saw her cake for the first time, she couldn't believe it. Nana had actually made a spider cake, just like she asked for!
Image
Yes, it was very creepy. But the birthday girl gets what the birthday girl wants, and we all had to admit that Nana did a fantastic job on it.
Image
After being serenaded and picking out the first piece, Emily also found out....
Image...that the spider cake tasted great!ImageEveryone else agreed too.ImageAlthough some folks preferred Mama's bread pudding with (lots of) whipped cream.ImageAfter cake and ice cream it was time to gather around and watch Emily open her presents....Image...with a little card-reading help from Mama.ImageSometimes it's hard to watch your sister get all the birthday attention, so Kate got to open a little present too.ImageEmily got lots of fun gifts, and really seemed to enjoy being the center of attention.Image
Of course with fun gifts comes a certain amount of "assembly required", which can be frustrating.
ImageWhile Mom and Pop Pop worked to get the hot wheels tracks set up, the kids stormed upstairs to the playroom to open Emily's final gift.ImageIt was a kid-size punching/kicking karate bag, complete with a squeaker target! All the kids wanted to try it out, even though they weren't quite sure how to really use it.ImageEmily knows how though!
Image
After giving the punching bag a workout it was time to go back downstairs, where Pop Pop just about had "Cris-Cross Crash" set up.ImageThe hot wheels tracks were a huge hit--everybody loved playing with them (even some of the grownups).ImageThis was our first attempt at combining a "kid" party with a "family" birthday party, and we think it went pretty well. Everyone seemed to have a good time, especially the birthday girl herself.
Happy Birthday Miss Emily Jane!

The Big Snow

This past Sunday and Monday we had our first big winter storm (we have already had some snow this season, but this was a legitimate blizzard).
Here's what Mom looked like after walking down to get the paper on Monday morning (i.e, glad to be back inside the warm house).
ImageAnd here's what the view out the front door looked like several hours later, when Mom was at work and the blizzard really got going.ImageIt let up for a little while during the day on Monday, so the kids were able to take a walk up into the woods (it would have been a good snowshoeing trip)....Image...and they came sledding back down.ImageThey did a little playing on the big plowed snowbanks in the driveway too....ImageUntil the blizzard really picked up, and it was time to shelter inside.ImageMama estimated that we got about 13.5" of new snow, but it was hard to tell with all the drifts. It was pretty exciting to have such a big storm, and also the fact that we didn't lose power made it even better.

Growing Things

The kids got some fun things in their Christmas stockings this year. One of the things Santa gave them was a little mermaid (Em) and a princess (Kate) that are supposed to grow when soaked in water.
Image
It sounded like a fun thing to do on a snowy night...so we did.

Round 1 was the mermaid. First Emily read the instructions carefully....
Image...made a wish....Image...then dropped her in.ImageRound 2 was the princess...Image...sometimes it's hard to think of just one wish....Image...and then she went in the water too.ImageThen came all the questions: "Will she fill the jar?" (maybe) "Will she be as big as the house" (hope not) "How come she's not growing?" (it takes ten days!).ImageEven thought it's obvious which one belongs to which girl, they wanted their initials on the glass jars "just in case".ImageNow all we have to do is watch them grow!Image
