Emily Turns Six!

New Year's Eve is always a special day for our family, because it is also Emily's birthday! We had planned her party for just after lunch, so we spent the morning cleaning the house and putting up decorations.
ImageWe did our traditional "streamers around the dining room", and Emily thought it looked great.ImageIt's hard to believe that our little baby is turning six years old. It's so true what they say about having young children: "The days pass slowly, but the years fly by". Emily was just a two-year-old toddler when we moved to Maine, and it almost seems like yesterday.ImageAs we got closer to party time, Em got more and more excited (of course). She was really bouncing off the walls.
Image
We had tried to invite some of her kindergarten buddies, but they were either out-of-town or we just couldn't make contact, so we decided to make this just a family party. Emily didn't seem to mind.
ImageGrandma, Pop Pop, Nana, Uncle David, Uncle Seth, Aunt Sara, and the cousins all arrived to help us celebrate, so it was a pretty full house.ImageNana had worked very hard (and consulted with Emily) on the birthday cake, which was toted in by Uncle David....Image...and it was perfect!ImageBy the time everyone had assembled for present-opening, it was impossible to contain Emily's excitement.ImageShe got some great gifts, all of which she liked....ImageImage...and then she decided to open the giant package from Mom and Mama that has been sitting on top of the hutch all week.ImageIt was just what she wanted (and what she asked Santa for): A skateboard!ImageYou could tell she was envisioning herself throwing down ollies (or whatever they're called) at a skatepark soon.ImageNext up was the big box from Grandma and Pop Pop....Image...it was a Hot Wheels race ramp, complete with cars! Emily wanted to play with it immediately, so Pop Pop got right to work....Image...and he had it together in no time.ImageThis racetrack was a big hit, as Em, Kate and the cousins raced the cars down it over and over.ImageEveryone also tried out the skateboard, which is a Fisher-Price "Grow With Me" model. It has an optional handle, and the wheel trucks can be moved in and out to give it greater (or less) stability for beginners.ImageEveryone quickly found out that riding a skateboard is much more difficult than it looks.ImageAfter presents it was time for cake. We all took a minute to admire Nana's work of art....Image....and Mom read aloud the poem "Now We are Six" by A.A. Milne, which was sent to Emily in a birthday card by her Great-Aunt Marilyn....Image....then we sang the birthday song....Image...and Emily blew out her candles.ImageThe cake proved to be not just good-looking, but delicious as well....ImageImageImage...which is how a birthday cake should be. Thanks Nana!ImageAnd there was even enough for seconds, much to Kate's delight.ImageAfter cake it was time to play more with Emily's presents....Image...socialize over coffee....Image....have a concert in Kate's room....Image...and of course enjoy some good ping pong competition.
Image
The nice thing about ping pong is that almost anyone, without much practice, can play decently....
Image...and it's multi-generational!
Image
The party was a lot of fun--thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate Emily's birthday today!
ImageAfter the party Emily wanted to really practice on her skateboard, so Mom cleared out some space in the basement and got her all padded up.ImageShe did pretty well!ImageShe's picking it up really fast, and can't wait to try it out on the driveway in the Spring.ImageHappy Birthday Emily Jane!

44 Years

Grandma and Pop Pop celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary this month! Here they are during their brief (4 month) engagement, just before tying the knot:

The Ladybug Game

Winter is game time! Besides card games, we have also started playing more board games together. Emily got this Ladybug game when she turned 4, but we have never really been able to play it correctly. Now that the girls are both able to count, stack cards, and move their game piece the correct amount, it is actually fun to play the game by the rules.
ImageThe only hitch is that they are now both suddenly super-competitive, so the game can get kind of fierce. We have had to revisit the concepts of being a "good sport" and a "poor sport" often.

High School Basketball

It's school vacation time, which means that the kids are home with Mama all day and driving her slightly crazy. Tonight after dinner Mom took the girls to a local high school basketball game to give Mama a break.
ImageSince we live in a small town, there's always a good chance we'll see someone we know at local events. Sure enough, right away we ran into Maureen, a good friend and Emily's former preschool teacher.ImageThe boys JV game was ending just as we got there, so we got to watch the boys varsity warm up. They were playing Medomak Valley, a non-league opponent.ImageThis was Mom's first time watching a boys high school game in Maine, and one thing she noticed was the lack of both diversity and height. Pretty much everyone on both teams was white and under 6 feet tall. If you've lived in a different part of the country, it can seem kind of strange.ImageThe game itself was pretty exciting for awhile--our team jumped out to an early lead, but ended up losing by about twenty. Mom enjoys watching sports of any kind.... Image...but the kids got a little antsy towards the end. They did ask lots of good questions though, and clapped along with the crowd when our team scored.
Image
Emily struck up a conversation with this nice older gentleman sitting next to us...it turns out he graduated from this same high school back in the 1950's! He told Emily "Maybe I'll see you playing out there one day." Maybe so.
ImageAt halftime the cheerleaders rolled out some mats and performed their "competition" number, which was entertaining.ImageThe girls were fascinated by the cheerleaders....Image...Mom isn't really sure why.ImageAll in all, several missions were accomplished: Mom got to watch sports, Mama got a break, and the kids got worn out before bedtime. Sweet!Image
