Family Fun Run

This morning we competed in the 1-mile Beat the Heat Family Fun Run for the third consecutive year! The first time we did it, it took us about twenty minutes to finish, and 3-year-old Kate burst into tears at the end (we sort of wondered if it could be considered child abuse to have "made" her run a mile). Last year Kate surprised us by finishing in 12 minutes, with Emily coming in about a minute later. This year Kate has been making bold predictions about winning the fun run, while Emily has just been looking forward to running with the whole family.
When we showed up to registration, we were happily surprised to find our buddies Luke and Alison, also ready to run.
Image
They brought their parents, of course....Amy (who was running in the 5k event and was coincidentally dressed exactly like Mama)....
Image
...and Henning, who was (coincidentally) dressed almost exactly like Mom.
Image
Grandma and Pop Pop also showed up to watch the big race!
Image
While we were waiting for the race to start, we spent some time going over the course....
Image
....and attempted to stretch (although hanging on Alison was more fun).
Image
Finally we lined up for the start, and at the whistle signal we were off!
Image
The kids did their typical sprint at the start--they haven't developed the concept of "pace" yet. We had decided to each stick with one kid, but it was hard for the moms to keep up with their initial sprint.
Image
After about 200 yards they slowed down to a jog, and we were able to stick together.
Image
The course winds through the woods behind some athletic fields, and is very pleasant and flat. The kids did a little bit of walking, but for the most part they jogged along.
Image
The last 200 yards or so is across a big field, and you can see the finish line from a long way away. This must have inspired Kate, because she turned on her finishing kick and crossed the line in a blistering ten minutes....
Image
...followed closely by Emily, only about 20 seconds behind.
Image
We cheered in our friends Luke....
Image
...and Alison....
Image
...and then grabbed some much-needed water (along with their finisher's medals).
Image
It turned out that Kate's bold prediction of "winning" the race came true, as she finished first among all females in the fun run. We had already left by the time they announced it, but she apparently won a t-shirt and a water bottle....pretty cool!
Image
As the kids hit the snack table for some well-deserved post-race snacks, we congratulated them for their big accomplishment. It's not every kid that will get up early on a saturday to go out and run a mile.

Good job Kate and Emily!

Bring Your Child to Work Day

Today was a special treat for Mom and the girls--Bring Your Child to Work Day!
For the last few days the kids have had the habit of waking us up at the crack of dawn, but of course today they chose to sleep in, and we had to rouse their sleepy heads at 6:10 in order to get to work on time. As soon as Mom reminded them about Work Day though, they bounced right out of bed with excitement.
We all had breakfast....
Image
....and did our morning primping....
Image
...then kissed Mama goodbye and got buckled in. Sometimes when you're up so early you need a buddy to ride with you--so Snowflake and Love Dog came along for the ride too.
Image
Here we are at Mom's office....
Image
...where the kids were quite happy to see their artwork proudly displayed on her door.
Image
There were lots of other kids at the office too, including three-year-old Levi, who greeted us with donut holes as soon as we came in. Thanks Levi!
Image
At 7:30 we did our morning stretches....
Image
...then Mom answered emails while the girls settled in to "work".
Image

Image
Boredom quickly set in, but luckily Mom had some new color books and crayons, which proved to be a nice distraction.
Image
At 8:30 we headed up to the corporate office, where all the kids and their parents were gathering. Each kid got a bag with a t-shirt, hard hat (with their name on it!), safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, and a name tag...pretty cool!
Image
Emily and Kate loved the gear, even though it was just a little bit too big for them. It's probably pretty hard to find real child-size safety equipment.
Image
Once everyone was suited up, we posed for a photo. Mom could tell the girls were very proud to be at work with her.
Image
When all the kids were ready, the whole group was welcomed with a nice speech by one of the company executives....
Image
...and then we all did stretches....
Image
....and headed out for our tour. There were almost 80 kids in attendance, so the large group was split up into three smaller ones, to make it a little easier on the tour guides.
Our tour started at the corporate headquarters (exciting!).
Image
We started at the third floor "museum", which has a few artifacts from the old days, along with a big portrait of the company's founders and a model of a floating crane barge. The company was founded 63 years ago, so there are definitely some interesting things to look at.
Image
The kids even got to ring the company bell, which is usually just reserved for special occasions, like winning a big job.
Image
We then proceeded to tour the rest of the corporate office, which was (frankly) pretty boring.
Image
The kids quickly lost interest in the purchasing, estimating, and HR departments (and who can blame them?).
Image
Although they perked up when we got to walk through the IT department, including the server room.
Image
Throughout the tour, Emily listened and asked questions. She really got into it, unlike Kate who was mostly hungry (and perhaps a little too young for this kind of thing).
Image
After corporate, we climbed on board a school bus....
Image
...which took us to our next destination....
Image
...the equipment department! This tour was much more interesting, as the kids could see people actually doing things.
Image
We checked out out the entire small tool rental and repair area, including the machine shop....
Image
...and (briefly) took a look at the equipment in the yard. Mom was hoping for a walk around the cranes, but instead it was time to get back on the bus....
Image
...and head over to the third leg of the tour--the Fabrication Shop. Here we got to see lots of welding, grinding, overhead cranes, and even a plasma cutter (sweet!).
Image
The fab shop is kind of loud, so the kids had to put their ear plugs in. Mom wasn't sure if they would tolerate the foam in their ears, but they kind of liked wearing them, and it definitely helped with the noise.
Image
We also toured the paint shop....
Image
...and the handrail fabrication tent, where we watched the guys work the hydraulic pipe bender. Emily and Mom were enthralled....
Image
...but Kate not so much.
Image
Finally the tour was over, and we headed back to Mom's office for a quick pit stop.
Image
The kids had some water, cooled off a little bit...
Image
....Emily attempted a quick catnap (she was worn out from asking all those questions)....
Image
...while Kate finally got her snack.
Image
The girls took a quick moment to admire the bulletin board in the copy room, and pick out their own photos....
Image
...and then we headed back over to corporate to finish up the event. There were some exercises, led by the company wellness manager (the lady with her hands on her rear in the photo below)....
Image
...and a group photo (look at all those kids!)....
Image
...then we finished up with a nice lunch in the corporate lunchroom.
Image
By the time Mama came to pick up the girls, they were exhausted from their big morning at work with Mom. In fact, Emily fell asleep almost immediately after this photo was taken.
Image
Bring Your Child to Work Day was a big hit with our family, and we sure are glad that Mom's company decided to put on such a neat event!
