Fish Drawing Guide - How To Draw A Fish Drawing In 6 Steps
Step 1: Draw The Base - quickly start your fish drawing

Start your fish drawing by sketching a large circle on the paper. This circle forms the widest part of the fish’s body, right behind its head.

Add a smaller circle to the right of the first one. This will mark where the tail attaches. Make sure the second circle is much smaller and not too far from the first.

Sketch a heart shape for the tail, connecting it to the small circle. For the head, draw a triangle-like shape at the front, following the curve of the large circle and extending it forward.

Finally, connect all the shapes with smooth lines to form the recognizable outline of the fish’s body.
Step 2: Draw The Fins

Add the pectoral and pelvic fins. The pectoral fins are oval-shaped and attached to the lower and upper front of the body. The pelvic fin is placed between the two circles.
Step 3: Draw The Head

Draw the fish’s eye slightly above the tip of the head triangle. Add a half-circle for the head, curving the line upward to meet the upper pectoral fin.
Step 4: Draw The Spiny Dorsal Fin

Sketch the spiny dorsal fin on the fish’s back. Start with the largest spike where an imaginary vertical line crosses the back, then add three smaller spikes.

Connect the spikes with curved lines to complete the dorsal fin.
Step 5: Add The Details

Erase the guidelines and lines separating the fins from the body. Add small, outward-curved lines inside the fins for texture.

Draw the mouth, a pupil, and curved lines around the eye. Add a line at the back of the head for more detail.

Add short lines inside the dorsal and caudal fins to enhance their texture. Draw vertical wavy lines across the body to represent scales and gills.
Step 6: Shade Your Fish Drawing - add realistic shading to your fish drawing

Shade the fish’s body softly with an HB pencil. Use a 4B pencil to darken the belly and add shadows to the fins, head, and dorsal fin.

Use an eraser to lighten the scales behind the head for a more realistic effect. Your fish drawing is now complete!
