tsurigama
As the days get warmer, the kettle begins to make its journey from the sunken winter hearth back up to the summer brazier. About mid-March the Tsurigama, or hanging kettle is used. It is suspended from a chain attached to a hook in the ceiling. No gotoku or trivet is used. Extra large rings hold a bridge piece that is attached to the chain.

chop that wood, carry water
not only is the winter wood harvested, chopped and stacked,
it beautifully lines the path toward the outer tea garden.
neighbors and friends visit the garden often
and chris ezzel
brings guests to
practice tea ceremony throughout the seasons.
it is a very good thing.

Picturing Incarceration: The WWII Sketches and Paintings of Kango Takamura - Densho: Japanese American Incarceration and Japanese Internment:
Photographs and moving images of World War II incarceration have helped keep memories of that era alive for decades. But since cameras were largely forbidden inside the camps, few images from the point of view of prisoners exist. Though not permitted to take photos, Kango Takamura documented his wartime experience at Santa Fe and, later, …

a new gate
the captain has been working all winter on the
surrounding fencing and gate
which will create a safe enclosure for
lola and her friends.
as with the rest of the garden and structures,
the fencing and gate are
fashioned with reclaimed wood
and hand wrought metal work.
it blends seamlessly to creating
an entrance to the
tea garden itself.

gifts everlasting
"karen, she's a silver sun
you best walk her way and watch it shine.
watch her watch the morning come."
-james taylor
it's been 10 years since my friend karen left at age 43.
she was an urban girl who loved the mechanical. the wild and rustic.
working cutting horses and border collies
working cutting horses and border collies
she was an artist, a gifted master printmaker. painter.
a deep and sensitive thinker.
i remember one day i went to her studio apartment
on the edge of the wild ocean.
on the edge of the wild ocean.
she had her finches living free without a cage, building nests on the curtain rods.
murph was just a pup
and we walked with stride, maybe chase, her beloved borders.
and we walked with stride, maybe chase, her beloved borders.
how she would have loved zu and tull!
when i look out from my tree house, to the wild sea below
i am grateful that she loved me, too.
and as often as i admired her beautiful vision and accomplishments
she always asked me, with a twinkle in her beautiful eyes,
she always asked me, with a twinkle in her beautiful eyes,
'when will you do your art?'.
what a gift.
and i will.

maturity
the mid summer garden is happy and healthy
as evidenced by the moles
wreaking havoc in the pathways.
the soil is beautiful and aerated. the plants and worms are thriving, too.
this year, we replaced a few plants and moved a couple more to
better habitat for sun exposure.
the hostas will need dividing, the ground covers trimmed back
and some native ferns need cleaning up.
it's perfect in that wonderful wabi sabi way.
