I could never answer to a whistle.

Now, there are a number of things that happened in November, but I think the most important one was that I got to have a dog for a week.  It was my favorite thing ever and also served to indicate which one of my kids is most like me; it's Adri.  She was very enthusiastic about making sure he was brushed, walked, fed and played with.  I don't see us getting a dog anytime soon but I will gladly take this guy for another week.

Charlotte proved once again that she is a genius.  We went to the library were she did number and letter puzzles for about an hour and amazed one of the moms there.  Charlotte has a talent sounding out which letter a word begins with and is very good at counting items and can match them to their number. I was kind of surprised at how well she did but I guess I shouldn't be considering she is Juliet's sister.

So, besides having a dog, this month I decided to try some whole food recipes.  Unfortunately for my family, I tried them all the same week.  The kids were mostly good sports and I was able to decide which recipes to keep and which ones to toss.  Jason loved the tomato bisque with homemade chicken stock and everyone loved the spaghetti and meatballs.  We also borrowed a food dehydrator and made cinnamon apple chips which are always a hit at my house.  The fact that my kids tried anything new made this a good week.

Just before Thanksgiving I had to take Jason in to get his ACL surgery taken care of.  Jason braced himself for the worst since his meniscus surgery really wiped him out.  Turns out this one wasn't so bad and he was able to be conscious for all of Thanksgiving day.  The day after that is when everything hit him and then he was in bed for a week.  He is recovering well now and is already walking without his crutches.

Since Jason's surgery was scheduled by the doctor at the last minute I had to switch up our times for parent teacher conferences.  The new times were not convenient for Jason and he was very upset he would have to miss them since he loves "listening to other people tell me how great my kids are."  To ease his pain I took my old Dictaphone with me to record each conference so he could listen as if he were there, and also so I could practice being an undercover agent.  During our conferences we discovered that Juliet is the fastest reader in her class, Adri is a natural leader and Luke is very polite and advancing quickly in his reading.  It's such a relief having kids who are good at school!

The day before Thanksgiving was our first snow storm of the season.  As soon as they got off the school bus the kids quickly bundled up and headed out to play despite how wet the snow was.  This was the first year Charlotte actually seemed to enjoy playing in the snow.  She stayed out even longer than Luke and only came in for a quick change of mittens so she could stay out longer.

Image

Adri and Juliet made an amazing school desk with this giant snow ball.  I failed to get a picture of it but I told them they would have to make another one when it snows again.

We had a relaxed Thanksgiving dinner with Jason's family and, to top it all off, Juliet lost her second tooth that evening.  She was excited to have lost one on a holiday just like her sister before her.

Quotes:

Charlotte:  I call Jason my father.
Annie:  What am I?
Charlotte:  You're my Ann.

Luke:  Milk and water are good for you.  And milk and water are kind of like Batman and Robin.

Jason:  What is toothless plus toothless?
Charlotte:  Threethless!

Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.

My friend, Hillary, and I renamed this month Rocktober.  You see, we were both able to secure tickets to the Monster Jam show in Philadelphia this month.  We decided it would be a good idea to take our family to see a monster truck show at least once in our life.  I will tell you this, it was VERY LOUD.  The stadium was also very small so it was humorous to watch the Grave Digger do a three point turn to get out of the arena.  Our favorite part was Truck-a-saurus (which I'm pretty sure wasn't his real name but that's what they called it on The Simpsons).  He blew fire and ate an entire car, over a napkin no less!  I would say this kind of show would be much more entertaining in a bigger venue but we're still happy to have gone.

This month we instituted a new allowance system, that is, we will now be giving out an allowance.  Adri had been asking me about earning money so Jason and I came up with a clever plan:  I made a list of jobs for the kids to do and priced them at either 25 cents or 50 cents (most were 25) and then limited their earning potential to two dollars a week.  So far I have had some nice help around the house and the kids are feeling good about earning some cash.

As far as school goes Juliet is doing great.  One week I complained that her spelling words were too easy and the next week she tells me that she has been moved up a level in spelling.  She went from words like 'bushes' to 'chimpanzee' and 'millionaire'.  It's pretty intense, especially when we forget to do the homework, but I am happy that she is being challenged.

Luke has made plenty of friends in his kindergarten class, as well as some buddies on the bus.  So far his best friend is named Rex and they sit next to each other on the bus.  Rex just happens to live in our neighborhood and has the same temperament as Luke, which makes both his mom and me very happy.  They play nicely and work together to solve problems and wrestle and play Spiderman and Batman.  Sometimes I get a call from Rex's mom telling me that the boys made plans on the bus and they need to play together today even though we planned a for them to play tomorrow.  They crack me up and I'm so glad that Luke found such a good kid to hang out with.

Witch fingers are one of the cool things I'm handing out this year for Halloween,
because now I'm one of those crazy moms who hates candy.

Adrienne got invited to a birthday party this month, and not just any party, a Harry Potter party!  I was more excited than she was but only because she had never read the books before.  I insisted we start studying for her party immediately.  We got through the first and part of the second book before the party and she and Juliet loved them.  Once we finish a book we watch the corresponding movie and the girls just can't get enough.  It's really fun to enjoy this series with them and watch them get so excited about wands and spells.  Even Charlotte walks around the house with a stick saying "Expelios!"  She doesn't seem too concerned that she's not saying an actual spell no matter how many times I try to correct her - because it's important to correct your children when they are saying the wrong spell.

Pumpkin painting.  You might think it's cleaner than carving but not by much.

My next project for this month was renewing our passports.  I didn't want to pay to get thephotos done so I had to make everyone suffer though my lighting tests and such.  I was very nervous that they would find something wrong with my pictures.  I printed them out for free at Nancy's house and made all the necessary appointments to get our applications sent in.  It seems the pictures were acceptable because we all have new passports and are ready to go on vacation.  Too bad we don't have anywhere to go yet.
Image
Passport picture outtakes
Now I only had to find time to get some family pictures done.  I had coordinated all the outfits and then could never find the time to take the pictures.  Seeing as how the weather was getting cooler, our outfits would soon be unfit for outdoor photography.  So I found an evening that was supposed to be mild, enlisted someone to push the shutter once I had set up the shot, dressed everyone up and away we went.  It was difficult setting up the shot and being in the shot, as well as having to be somewhere like 30 minutes after we got to our location.  Considering all these things, I'm pretty happy with the end result and proud to call it my own.

Image
Phew, it's done!

OH, I forgot about Charlotte.  She has been practicing her letters like a girl possessed.  The other day she was asking how to spell her name.  I wrote it down for her, told her she could copy it from there and then went to do another task.  When I came back I was quite surprised to find that she had copied her name almost without error.

Sorry, I didn't remember to turn the picture around.
Besides being busy with all those other things (I did sound busy, didn't I? Maybe not) I had also taken on a babysitting job for a friend of mine.  I watch her baby a few times a week while she gives flu shots.  It's convenient and a nice little income for both of us.

I also had the church Halloween part to take care of.  We haven't had a church Halloween party in a few years and I had been outspoken at championing that cause, so I was volunteered for the position.  I had all the young men and young women help out with the party and it was a great success (I know because I heard one kid say, "This is better than the real Halloween!").  I've already got plans for what to change next year but, for now, I'll concentrate on getting my Christmas cards ordered.

Finally it was real Halloween time.  As mentioned previously I decided not to hand out candy this year and instead opted for witchy fingers and finger flashlights.  While kids appeared a little confused at first they seemed to enjoy their prizes as much as my kids enjoyed playing with them before they were all given away.

Now, for the Halloween pictures:

I told you she likes to dance with her reflection
Quotes:

Luke:  Do you think someone is watching us on a TV show?

Luke:  (20 minutes after trick or treating starts) I have enough candy.

Charlotte:  You're my father.  Boys are fathers.
Jason:  What are girls?
Charlotte:  Girl fathers.

A real Farrari! Punch me Guido, punch me in the face! This is the most glorious day of my life!

For the first time since we moved to Kennett Jason and I took our family to the annual Mushroom Festival!  Mostly we just went to the fair grounds and hopped on a few rides.  Jason took the kids to see the parade the next day and they all got to greet our high schooler friends in the marching band and meet the elementary school mascot.  The only thing I didn't get to do was meet the Mushroom Festival mascot, Fun Gus.  Maybe next year, Gus . . .

Image
It's fun when adults can ride for free if they are accompanying a child.

Image

The only thing that could possibly top the Mushroom Festival happened a few weekends later when Jason saw this parked across the street from our house.  He immediately made Luke pose for some pictures and sent them to every boy in his phone.

Luke thought the engine looked like a rocket.

The kids have adjusted well to their school schedules.  Things were a little bit more dramatic for Luke, who is now in full-day kindergarten.  He was okay until about Thursday and then his brain exploded and he started freaking out about everything.  We implemented an earlier bedtime for the next few days and now he's doing great.

Once they got off the bus they usually wanted to go play in the dirt or ride bikes.  Jason and I have tried to head off this 'playing in the dirt' fad by planting things where they like to play, but to no avail.  I finally gave in and just made sure they had something to sit on then got the tub ready.

Image
In addition to Jenga, this is something they could do for hours together.
So, now it's just Charlotte and me at home.  Since the weather is still warm we have plenty to do and we are having fun adjusting to our new routine.  This also means that Charlotte is the subject of my photography now more than ever.  She's the only one left to take pictures of during the day!

We now have a new gymnastics schedule that, I thought, I had orchestrated perfectly because all the lessons were on the same day.  Well, as it turns out, taking Luke at 5 then picking him up at 6 and dropping the girls off at 6 and going back to pick them up at 7 doesn't make for a very dinner friendly evening.  The good news is that our local library has a Lego club on Tuesdays.  The kids like it and that one works just fine with my schedule.

Image

The kids helped me finally pick my stupid carrots.  I tried so hard to make sure these guys had room to grow but they never got very long and they all tasted quite bitter.  They were fun to pull though and now I've learned a precious lesson:  I don't want to grow carrots again.

Image
We only faked eating these because they were so gross.

Among other things, we also went on a Sunday hike with some friends and their dog.  Charlotte wasn't very surefooted on the paths we chose so I ended up carrying her part of the way which made me reconsider my fitness level.

Image
The couple we went with just happened to be Luke's teachers at church so he wasn't afraid to be friendly.

Image
The girls were not deterred by the stinky, dead fish smell and got as close to the water as possible.

Now that Luke is gone, Charlotte has commandeered one of his friends who hasn't left for kindergarten yet.  His name is Jason and Charlotte claims he is her best friend.  Lucky for Charlotte, his mom and I are buddies so we got to hang out quite a bit and cement Charlotte's new friendship.

She may not look it but she had a good time.

The funny thing is that she does know this song.

Quotes:

Luke:  Dad, I think me and you should go to the zoo again because I forget what color giraffes are.

Neighbor girl:  Luke, will you marry me?
Luke:  I can't.  I love you but I'm shorter than you and dads have to be taller than moms.

Luke:  When I go to heaven and I see Jesus I'm going to ask him, "Do you know that ants eat our food?!"

Charlotte:  Does pizza have fruits and vegetables in it?
Annie:  Uh, not really.  I guess there are tomatoes in the sauce.
Charlotte:  What is apple juice made of?
Annie:  What do you think?
Charlotte:  I don't know . . . pizza?

With a dreamy, far-off look, and her nose stuck in a book . . .

Adrienne turned 9 on the first of August.  I can't remember everything she got for her birthday but it looks like she was very excited to get these books.  She had her last violin lesson that day and said it was her best one yet.  We had pancakes and French toast for dinner, opened presents and generally had a nice night.
Image

Adrienne was our very first baby and we were beyond excited to meet her.
The doctor told me she would probably be a week late because she was so small.
She ended up coming a week early at a healthy 5lbs 10oz.

Image

Adri was a tiny baby for a good long while.  In fact, due to losing some weight from being sick, she weighed a mere 16lbs when she was one year old.

Image

Adri never spit up, unlike ALL of her siblings, and was a very easy baby.  She could fall asleep anywhere, which I attributed to her just being a baby and babies like to sleep.  Yeah, I didn't know a lot about babies back then.

Image

While she was very good for her parents Adrienne HATED everyone else.  Okay, not everyone, but mostly everyone.  My mom lived with us for a few months and Adri loved her to pieces.
She also went to stay with her aunt Loni when I went back to work.
She was pretty good there but very aware when it was time to leave.

Image

Image

Adri taught herself to swim but has never been able to go under the water without plugging her nose.  That is why she always looks ridiculous when she swims; she wears goggles and a goofy nose plug.

Image
This little outfit was my very favorite.  Those little shoes were so squishy and she wore them all the time.

One of Adri's favorite things has always been arts and crafting.  Every time I see her pull out the scissors I know I'm in trouble.  She will leave a scattering of tiny pieces of paper all over the floor after making her creations.  She usually ends up with something very cliva' (if you don't understand this word, please see my previous post).

ImageImage

Adri has never been jealous of any of our babies.  She was always very excited to be a big sister.  She loved helping with all her siblings and has become very adept at bossing them around.

Image

Ever since we bought our first Cinderella dress Adrienne has loved to play dress up.  I remember when she was about two and a half she would refuse to wear normal clothes and only wanted to wear dress ups.  This would not have been a problem except that it was winter and VERY cold.  We often argued until I could convince her to wear pants and a sweater underneath her dress ups.  This extended to bedtime when she would wear warm pajamas to bed with a fancy nightgown over top.

Image

Our only child to have a significant birth mark, Adri bears a small, dark spot just under her mouth.  It is usually mistaken for a smudge of chocolate that her parents have forgotten to scrub off.

Image

Adrienne is my only child who gets cold sores.  I'm afraid I passed this lovely trait on to her and we have to be careful during the summer or she will end up with several of them at one time.
Notice the healing sores under her lip and nose.

Image

Her middle name should have been Sassafrass because, man alive, this girl can be a sass.  She is very stubborn and will only do a thing if she wants to, even if her mom won't let her in the house until her task is completed.  She once stayed outside for about 45 minutes because I wouldn't let her inside until she had picked up her cup off the ground and put it in the kitchen sink.  She even tried to bargain with me so she would only have to bring it to the door.

Adri has always loved to dance.  She is the only one of our children that has ever been enrolled in an official dance class but we weren't very interested in continuing.  Mostly Adri likes freestyle.  Jason loves to turn on music and then secretly video Adri getting her groove on.  She especially loves watching her reflection while she's busting her moves.

Image

Maybe it's because I have trained her from a young age but Adri has always been a very good photographic model.  Unfortunately for her, most of her life was during my period of less than sub par photographic skills.  She has also been a very patient daughter for me as
I learned how to do pig tails and French braids.

Image

Adri LOVES to sing.  She does most of her singing where only our family can hear but every once in a while she'll really let loose, like at the school talent show this year.  She will often make up songs and sing them to herself, which makes for a fantastic secret video taping opportunity.

Image

This picture is of a very determined kindergartener.  She didn't have any fear about getting on that bus all by herself without knowing a single person at her new school.  Adri has never had any trouble in class.  She is often described as a perfect student (probably because she leaves her sass
at home).  She is quick and efficient with her assignments, she always remembers her homework and likes to help other students who are behind.  She is polite in class and makes friends easily.  Jason and I both love attending parent teacher conferences because Adri gets nothing but compliments.
Image

Dinner time can be the worst for me because most of my kids are so fussy about what they will eat.  Adrienne will try anything I put in front of her and most days is excited when she hears what is for dinner.  It's always nice to have at least one kid on your side.
Image

Adri loves to read.  When the weather is warm she will sit out on the lawn to read for a while after she gets off the bus instead of coming inside for a snack.
Image
Adri and baby Charlotte

Adri prides herself on losing her teeth on special days of the year.
She lost her first tooth on Christmas Eve and her second one on MLK Jr. Day.
Image

When last I checked Adri wanted to be a feelings doctor (therapist) when she grows up.

Image

Adrienne is a carnivore.  I asked her what her favorite food is and she said "Any kind of meat!"  It's true that Adri loves a good steak and will eat most anything with chicken in it but, besides bacon and crab, I'm pretty sure those are the only meats she has tried.

Image

I love that she is not afraid to make goofy faces for the camera.  Sometimes smiles are just boring.

Image

Adri is a tiny thing and always has been.  I still have to sew in the waist
of nearly every pair of pants she owns so they won't fall off.

Image

So far Adri is our only child to take up a second instrument.  She currently plays the piano and violin.

Adrienne is brave, intelligent, creative and kind, and now she's NINE!
Happy birthday Adrienne!
