Our Christmas Card

Image

Dear Friends and Family,

What a year it’s been.  2012 has been one of the most joyful ones ever.

After a year, we feel like we’ve finally settled into the DC area.  We can even find our way around without GPS (most of the time).  We’re getting good at keeping our heads down through hurricanes, earthquakes and derechos (derecho [dey-RAY-cho ] noun. Big wind storm that knocks power out for 4
days, in July heat, when the in-laws are in town).

Leo turned one in November and we couldn’t be happier with our little guy.  He is very curious and likes to look around and touch everything.  His favorite activity is to climb the stairs.  We can’t keep him off them.  We’ll turn around and there’s a giggle at the top of the stairs.  It gives his mom a heart attack every time.  He especially loves books of any kind and can often be found flipping through one.

Gentri is happy to spend her days with Leo.  It has been a year of helping him to learn and grow.   She has been very active in mom groups and with her church activities.  Every week she spends an evening in the glass studio melting glass, making hollow beads and icicles.  She is looking forward to mastering new techniques but especially learning about boro glass in the next year.  She has also been teaching classes at the bead store.

Heber has finally accepted the fact that DC traffic has forced him to rise before 6:00 a.m. to keep his commute reasonable.   Thankfully he’s got a good carpool buddy to keep him awake. He’s continued his work at the Naval Research Laboratory on a space satellite project.  He’s been exploring biking trails in the area and has found several opportunities to ride with buddies.  Weekly guitar lessons have been paying off and he loves coming home and helping Leo to learn how to crawl and climb the stairs.  He is not above bribing Leo with popsicles and ice cream.

Living on the East Coast, we were able to get out and see some wonderful sites.  We spent a weekend in the Shenandoah Mountains (we so miss our mountains) and saw our first Civil War Reenactment.  We celebrated a Lincoln summer and visited Fords Theatre, Gettysburg and the Lincoln Memorial.  We welcomed visitors from across the US to come and stay with us and were able to see many of the DC sites.

In September, we rented a house in the Outer Banks with some friends.  Heber fulfilled his dream to see where the Wright brothers took their first flight and Gentri braved the big waves and swam in the ocean.  Leo had the best time crawling in the sand and exploring.  We LOVED it and hope to spend many more vacations there.

We have been so blessed by supportive family and friends this year.  You are welcome at our home anytime.  There’s a bed and basement “suite” waiting for you.  We promise lots of Leo kisses.

We are so thankful for you and wish you the happiest and healthiest of new years!

Much love,
Heber, Gentri and Leo

Silent Night

I am so saddened to hear about the shooting in Connecticut.  As I read articles, saw pictures, listened to the radio, I felt so sad for this community, for those who died and especially those who survived.  I hugged Leo a little closer.  What a world we live in.

It made me think of a Sunday many years ago.

I grew up in a small, very safe town.  It was one of those where neighbors knew each other.  I can count on one hand any truly horrible thing that occurred.

When I was a senior in high school, I was called to be the Sacrament meeting chorister in my ward.  I selected the songs each week and led them in the meeting.  There isn't much that was memorable about that time except for one Sunday.

It was one of the first weeks in December, I believe.  The night before, our little town had been rocked by a shooting.  As I recall, it was a husband and wife and also an employee at a restaurant right next to their house.  This home was in our ward and the following day, family members sat on the side pews.

Several weeks before, I had planned the music for that meeting.  The planned closing song was "Silent Night."  As we sang that hymn, I knew that Heavenly Father had had a hand in planning the music for that day.  Because of this silent, sacred night there could be comfort and peace for those whose night was not quiet.

As I think of the families who are suffering this night after the Connecticut shooting, I know there is comfort to be found because of the silent night.  May his peace be with them.

This morning....

Our adventurous, curious little guy had quite the shenanigans.

Leo unrolled the wrapping paper.  I thought he was unwrapping one of the presents under the tree that Heber had recently placed there (I gave him a few minutes).

So I put it away.  Then he figured out how to take the plastic off of a new roll of wrapping paper, unrolled it and sat right down in the middle of it. Sharp cookie.

He then moved over to the ribbon on the bannister and wanted to pull it right off.

We took the party upstairs and realized that he'd figured out how to open the bathroom door.  Oh joy.

Sweet, very curious guy.  Well, I guess it was cute today.  We'll see about tomorrow.  Oh and grandparents, get your houses ready, we'll be there in less than 2 weeks. Utah here we come.

Christmas Time is Here...

There is something magical about the holiday season.  At mom group today, we were talking about this, about Santa and magic.  Now that I'm the mom, it's my turn to make it special.  It reminded me of a blog post I wrote several years ago.  You can read it here.

It's a lot of effort to make it special.  After Leo's birthday and Thanksgiving, I was pretty burned out.  Heb's been working long hours on a project deadline, Leo wasn't sleeping all that well and I've just been tired.  This has led to me being tired and generally bored with everything.  Getting everything up has given me a little boost to get excited for the holidays and our trip home.

We put up the tree, twinkle lights, snowflakes.  It's a lot of work to get it all up, but I know there's at least one person who really appreciated it.  Leo has been loving the decorations.  When he came down the next morning, he wanted to touch it all.  He looked and looked.  It took me a full half hour to get him to calm down enough to eat breakfast.

I probably won't remember being tired but I'll remember his excitement for the holidays.  It's time to embrace the special.

As we were putting them up, he was so excited that he stood on his own for the first time without even realizing it.
